    Hi Steve,
    Nice progress, looking really good.

The White is White Lead Paint, producing a dirty White finish.
The alternative seems to have been a mixture of Wood-Coal Tar that gave an almost Black finish, Sulphur was often added to the mixture to ward off Toredo.

    Very Nice work Chap!!
I really like the "Upgraded" version to an otherwise mediocre kit.

    Brings back a few memories....

    Hello all
change of plan from my last post I was gonna plank upward from the rubbing strake then work inside ship however I decided to fit all the planking and then the rubbing strake.

As this was a single plank painted version of the kit I have had to make my own planking and hardwood pieces I down this by thicknessing some materials in my garage to 5mm then ripping down to .6mm on my little proxon tablesaw you will notice some saw marks from the little saw however these easily sanded out.

I did not taper the planks just shaped the ends of them if that makes sense I like the look of how this turned out as opposed to tapering every plank and the consistency of the taper not being even and obvious in the finish.

I planked downward from rubbing strake four planks then planked upward from the keel it left me with sort of a waterline effect.

I have not used any filler as even the smallest amount not sanded off will show in the finish

Lastly I have applied finish to the hull just to keep my fingerprints off the bare would as I continue to build

Hi Steve, I've really enjoyed reading your log and it's been really informative.  I'm just about to start a Constructo 1:50 Bounty and I'm just pulling some photos together to start my own log.  I was really pleased to see your deck planking configuration as my kit doesn't specify what it should be and it provides long planking lengths which wouldn't be very realistic so I'm going to adopt your 120mm system.  Thank you once again for such a brilliant log.
    Cheers

Hi rexy have you tried the scroll saw blades that cut in any direction pretty handy but can lead to mistakes also

Doug don't know if you have a drum sander but that would be helpful

Why is it that you want a display ship so badly, and why the Constitution? I'm not being sarcastic, it's a serious question to help you understand what you want.

Do you live in an area with a significant nautical tradition and want to fit in? If so, cheap and low-quality models like that are just as likely to get you laughed at as respected. Anyone who knows anything about the Constitution will be horrified if you show them either of those models, and anyone who doesn't won't really care what ship is on your mantle.

In all honesty, consider buying a nice painting instead. There are quite a few options for well-done nautical artwork that would look quite attractive on a mantle, be just as much of a conversation piece, and would support a real artist instead of whomever is producing those crappy knockoffs. Wouldn't need as much dusting, either.

If you really, really want a model, buy the plastic kit for the Revell Constitution at 1:196. It's pretty manageable for just about anybody to turn out a decent looking model without taking too long at it, it'll inherently be more accurate than anything you linked to, and having built it yourself will make it a much more interesting conversation piece.

    Hello Dave,

Not only The Black Prince from Mamoli, but also Bluenose from Amati.
You are a busy person. Did you start a buildlog yet for the Black Prince?

Commercial use of plans is only allowed when written permission is granted by the draughtsman and/or owner of the original drawings. I think the plans are protected with a copyright.

Construction plans for Bluenose are still available with Amati. contact@amatimodel.com
Or check their website for retailers.

Doug here is a little list of what i would consider as the right tool for the job, if you plan on continuing in the hobby it is never to early to buy some small power tools.

small Band saw would be the best i think, Scroll saw with a fine blade cutting on the down stroke would be the next best, scroll saws come in handy as you can just change the blade and work with metal ideal for brass.

    Cheers Rexy.

If there is enough wood on the billet, cut the pieces out very roughly then use a drum sander on your dremel for final shaping. If the pieces are going to be painted coat the delicate areas with thin ca glue, this will harden the wood up and help prevent splitting then cut and shape as mentioned.
This all I got, hope it helps.
