Just a few days ago I received the Hermione kit and an extra kit of its crew from AL. 

I boght it from the L Hermione Lafayette Museum in Rochefort France. It was the only supplier offering together both ship and crew kit. And more to that it offered the chepeast price including shipping. 

The best thing was that  it arrived from France to Cyprus in only 4  days! Incredible!

Here is my invoice.

Eddie I bought it from the ships museum in Rochefort France. I could not find the kit and its crew both items together in the known internet shops usualy buy from and prefer. The museum had an ecxellent price, the cheapest shipping cost and it came to Cyprus within 4 days. Fantastic!

Philo426 Tryed different stiffner agents "to put wind in the sails" and a few failled but the set now is not complete.

Have meessed up my sails set. Trying to find and buy a new sails set of my AL kit of Hermione Lafayette. Does anybody have a clue?

Do you apply the stif. agent in both sides or only on the side where the wind blows?

I rather go for an acrylic varnish spray with the help of an air ballon.... but am afraid that when the varnish (sprayed on both sail sides) drys out it can may be stay stucked on the ballon.

What do you think?

Do you think that the wire method  can be succesfull without the use of any chemical as varnish, glue or filler?

Ok thank you.  I saw you are in France. So I let you know, am working on L'Hermione and I plan to come to France in May and visit Rochefort.

Am thinking that the safer way to do this is the mechanical and not the chamical approach. A still wire 1/2 mm (1/89) or less depending on the scale is safer.... no danger of messing up the sails if something goes wrong with tha varnish or fillers etc. A wire cannot harm and it can also be corrected or even withdraw until you have the desirable result. Isnt so wefalck?

Am thinking to go for it. Do you think 1/2 mm diam for 1/89 scale is reasonable?

You mean inflate the sir balloon and place the wet with varnish or pva sail on the ballon until it drys?

Thank you Frankie.... I wont use it. Am thinking as wefalck advised me to use mat varnish. Though I dont know how exactly I should do so.

I believe the acrylic  varnish spray will be a very practical applycation prosses. Spraying the sails inside side..... I dont know...  if thats correct.

How shall I apply the sanding filler or the varnish?

I have been told that using (spraying) starch on sails I can achieve more stiffnes of the cloth making the sails look full of wind. Is that a fact?

I was told by a modeller of AL that a nitrocellulose varnish can do the job... I dont know....I never tryed it and dont know about the fume

Thank you my friend... so varnish is not needed. The problem tough in my case is that I cant use easily solvent based filler because of my asthma.... ok if I must then I ll look for some safety mask etc. But I just thoght that a varnish will do...

First time I need to paint my wooden model with paints. Am going to use the vallejo label, its water based... and I wonder if before painting and after fine sandpaper a varnish will help? Gloss or matt... thats maybe irrelevant because the paint will  cover the varnish  anyway. But is it really essential to use  before paint a varnish or even another acrylic clear paint? Or can I go ahead with painting after sanding and tha will do?
