I wonder how short can the shortest plank (SP) be. Is there a rule to it? If a ship has average planks of 18 feet*, how short can its SP be? 6 feet? Thats ca. 30% of the avarege plank, that will do or is it rather too small?
* of course its a question again how this avarage plank is derminated or better.... how long can an avarage plank be?

I wonder about the function of the two capstans on myfrench frigate. The one is for the anchor... ok.What about the second one? In his book the directorof Rochefort museum names the capstans, the one as "the small capstan" and the otheras "the main capstan"
Here are the plans taken out fromDe Fontanieus book, showing both
capstans position on the ship.
Any one knows what each one does? -

When you lay the garboard be sure to keep an eye on the upper edge - the straight edge. Most people have a tendancy to slide the garboard too far forward. To the point where the bow end wants to start curving upwards. This is too far. What happens is all the subsequent planks above the garboard will pick up that curve, compounding the problem.
The trick I use is to lay the garboard against the keel - lower edge in the rabbet - bow end about 2 inches behind the stem. Keeping the garboard in the rabbet, slowly slide it towards the bow watching the leading edge. When you see that upper edge begin to lift up stop sliding, backoff a bit and try again. You want to stop sliding right before the point where the edge begins to lift.
Thank you mikiek.... I think I got it

Need advise guys....
So: Tapering the Garboard plank its made on the plankside facing the keel... the other side stays a straight line. All the other planks are tapered on the oposite side. That is , the planks are tapered on the side facing the wale. And ofcourse at the end, the last plank which closes the endgap, is between two straight sides (garboard and last planank facing the wale), it can be a spilled plank, tapered on both side. Is that correct? Do I get the planking process correct so? Are there also other proceses?

In the mean time I spoke with a gentelman -modeller- from AL and he gave me the coresponding colors to the real ship in Vallejo numbers. If you wish I can send you the actuall numbers AL gave me.

But there are not specified.... for example "red" what kind of red? AL in its webpage gives a table where the colors of Hermione are specified according to "Patone color model".It gives the numbers of that system which ofcourse do not correspond with any known model paints brand i.e. vallejo or revell or humbrol etc. Thats what am bothering you about. The question is how are we going to pick the right colors if there are no specification given in the kit.
Hope am not driving you crazy with my persistance but I think is something we have to find out before buying the paints.
All the best and thank you for your response.
