Made the remaining bulkhead patterns today along with the sub deck patterns. Motivation is low due to work being wicked crazy....end of day I am wiped, plus it's been in the Flippin 90s here lately and my patio is a sauna after work so no joy there. I should be able to get a bunch done this weekend..... Pamela -

Got some bits cut out...... Also I believe I blew the belt on the Lil table saw.....I've been a Lil taxing on it.....ooops. the ebony is kinda hard.....will do nicely. Onward, Pamela

Ok....change up.....I think instead of black walnut stained to resemble the black paint...I'm going to aquire some Gabon Ebony. Local place has it.....1"x3"x24" is the 50.00....ouch Back to that goofy thing, Pamela

Ok....ideas here....I don't wish to paint anything here....if anything stains. So selecting woods that work together might be tough......the decking is teak.. That's set.....keel, stem, rudder...walnut.....now, my terminology is bad here so bare with me. Top rail, few planks below that and below the gun ports black walnut, gun port planking cherry or plain walnut.....and main hull planking cherry. Is this way off base....or might that work? Suggestions, critisms, tell me I'm goofy..... Pamela

Wow...accomplished way more than I thought I would this evening.......woo-hoo The first poplar plank is 48"x10"x3/8"......so this should give a good idea of actual size. Now to find a nice Lil band saw for at home. The last photo is the walnut. This wood I got from Ocooch hardwoods in Wisconsin seems to be very good stuff. Onward, Pamela

Ooooh......yer my new best friend.....I would like to do one of these as well in 1/24 full framed and detailed to go along with the United states in an enormous diarama of the final minutes of the battle...complete with smashed masts and all battle damage. And yes I am certifiably nuts...that's been established... Wink, Pamela

Ok...wood and saw parts are on the truck for delivery....tracking is a wonderful thing. Came into work a bit early to start the pattern making process....yes I have been slacking, but I have been cleaning up the shipyard so building will be more efficient. Onward McDuff, Pamela

For doing fiberglass. ..look into stuff called peel ply......it is placed on top of wet glass and squeegeed. Let dry...then "peel" off......leaving a completely smooth surface where very little if any sanding and/or filling are required. Pamela

Smell is not bad at all....unique tho. Yes I am sure I have enough to do the main and quarter deck. Seeing the museum is closed today I can make the templates without interuption. The conference table is perfect for this. I was asked earlier what I use to cut everything.... you have seen my micro mark table saw....also a porter cable scroll....a rigid oscillating belt/post sander.....need to borrow or buy a small band saw to make rough sawing go quicker. Hoping to receive the walnut and poplar this coming week. Pamela

I ended up with 33 planks 3/4" wide 1/16" thick 24" long and 12 roughly 3/8" wide. Scale 9" wide plank is 3/8" in 1/24 And now my hands smell like teak.....lol.

This started out as 24"x6"x3/4".....just a Lil ways to go.....probably over 60.00 worth of thin planking right there

I've cut 6 of those planks so far.......almost perfect. I'll finish ripping the 24"x1.5" piece down then figure out how wide they need to be. These will get mounted to the sub deck which instead of the basswood like in the kit....I still have a large piece of 1/16" aircraft plywood left over from a huge model airplane.

Found teak.....holy crap. Smallest piece they had was 8'x5.5"x3/4".......cost 60 bucks. Took it to the museum and used the cross cut saw to cut off 24"... then the industrial table saw to rip that in half. Now it's manageable for my little one. Stuff smells funky.....oily.....gorgeous color. Pamela Grrr......need to figure out how to make images smaller than 2 meg

I bought some sample wood to play around with until the poplar and walnut come from Ocooch hardwoods. I got maple, birch, cherry They didn't have teak...I'll have to go elsewhere. Tomorrow I'm going to drag out the lil table saw and mess around ripping deck planks. Pamela

If I use teak decking careful planning for all the hull planking to enhance each others color rather than contrast them Pamela

Anyone tried teak? I know on many full size ships especially warships of the 20th century decking is teak. Might be a bit wide on grain tho. Pamela

That's kinda the idea....being this large not much in the way of "stuff" is available.. .so fabricating everything from scratch is really the only way Pamela
