When I started building Constitution, I never thought I would go into this much detail. In fact, building the gun deck wasn't even on my agenda. I only intended to do what was stated in the building instructions for the Model Shipways kit. However, while looking at other modelers' build logs, I noticed that a few modelers had also made the gun deck, so I decided to do the same. I am now very pleased with the decision I made. Main beams and supportive beams around the foremast are in progress. -

Thank you Greg. Of course I know it's a joke. I'm building her as it is today but I will skip the objects that represent today's technology. -

Yes, they are a little thick and they block the view. I will make the next ones thinner and yes I will add all the supportive beams. My goal is to add as much detail as possible. -

I fabricated the first diagonal knees and installed them in place. Now it's time for the section on the gun deck, including the forward bits. -

The bowsprit bitts and the beam to which they were fixed were painted and mounted in place. The beam at the forward end has been prepared. In the meantime, I continue to prepare the gun tackles and add them to the guns. -

As I install the vertical knees, I will also add the gun tackles. I couldn't do this before because the tackle hooks are connected to the eyebolts attached to the knees. I don't plan on adding rope coils to the gun tackles. Maybe I'll add these to the guns on the spar deck. Of course, like everything else, I am making the blocks and hooks myself. -

Since I don't have a detailed plan, I have to build the ship by looking at the images on the internet. While manufacturing each part, I take the measurements from the model, first draw the manufacturing drawing and produce the parts accordingly. In this case, I now have to build the gun deck and spar deck together to ensure the stuff on th gun deck are in proper position with the spar deck beams. As a strategy, I chose to start from the bow of the ship and move towards the stern. To ensure the stability of the ship, three different knees are used between the decks: vertical, horizontal and diagonal. I will need to manufacture each of these knees by taking measurements on the model. It will be a long and difficult journey. -

The 5mm beads I ordered arrived and I went back to the pumps. I put the quad pump back together with the new beads. I think it's more in proportion to reality now. -

Thank you Jon. In fact, I will partly cover the spar deck so that the details on the gun deck can be seen even a little. -

I also guessed they were stoppers. Thank you for your confirmation. -

I don't know exactly what this mechanism does, the anchor chain passes through the hole. It looks like some kind of clamp. These won't be very visible when the model is finished, but I wanted to add them anyway. At least I'll know they are there. -

Thank you. I don't know the purpose of this spherical assembly in the pump, but it appears to be out of scale in my model. Looks like I'll try to find smaller ones. -

I tested with the beads I found at home to see how the pump would look when the pieces are put together. I am pleased with the look and hoping the pump will look better once it's painted. I will try to find smaller spherical beads. -

I first made the frames from wood because I didn't have square brass bar. But I didn't like it very much, it was too rough and far from reality. That's why I remade them from brass wire. I think they look more realistic now.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
