I have to solder brass masts and PE for a1/200 Bismarck. I'm having a real hard time deciding which solder, flux, iron/torch to buy. Solder: there is silver bearing, lead free, 60/40 leaded, 50/50 leaded. Then theres rosin core or flux infused into the solder... it so confusing people have said dont get silver, the melting temp is to high others say get silver its stronger. I have no idea what to get. Flux: acid based, water soluable, rosin flux, paste, liquid. Again i have no clue what to get. Torch or iron? This is very fustrating I just wish some one would say here buy this and tell me exactly wat to buy. Would this be ok to buy? https://www.micromark.com/Stay-Brite-Silver-Solder

Thank guys, very well said Cog! I do plan on the Missouri, Hornet and hood after the bismark if I have the stamina. So it wont go to waste. The Pontos PE will arrive Monday but I think I can safley airbrush some parts and not have to go backwards later. I found this cart in the dumpster at work. Spray painted it black(during work hours of course) and made it my new paint station. Trying some shading, I dont know what I'm doing but I will learn.

Trumpeter kit $250 mk1 PE $200 pontos PE $160 VM gun kits $72 and everything else I had to buy. Compressor, airbrush, all paint and glues, PE tools, tweezer set.... litterally everything. Add it all up its close to $1300! Not to mention the custom acrylic case and display table and lighting. I bet this will hit $2000. But I LOVE every minute of it!

Oh yes it does! Thank you. Dirty yellow it is! There is enough grey on the ship already.

I'm having a hard time trying to figure out what color these life rafts were. I don't think they were grey.

Looks like its gonna be alot of trailer and error. I have an iron i just have to buy flex and solder. Maybe micromark has somthing.

Nope no prep at all. I didnt see any chipping. Im going to have to learn how to solder very soon though for the masts. Torch or iron? What flux? What solder? How to solder? This is a never ending learning experience and a never ending wallet drain lol. But i love it.

Nope I don't prime. The only thing I primed is the hull. I feel like it takes away a little bit of detail. Of course i'm probably just paranoid.

RGL I thought about it but I would just make a mess 😬 Thats alot of deck fittings. ALOT of airbrushing and weathering/washing coming soon😕

Thats so cool I'm going to google using a pencil. I'm just never happy with my work...ever! 😕

Oh wow a pencil huh. I never thought of that. I use "AK Interactive's naval kriegsmarine wash" color code AK303. Then I wipe off the excess with their white spirit and a q-tip. That 1 searchlight took 45 minutes. It takes to long lol. I want to try dry brushing but Im to scared to.

Thank you OC. Personally I think Im to sloppy with it. I wish I could make the dark lines thinner and more crisp.

The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
