Keith Black reacted to Coyote_6 in Prince de Neufchatel by Coyote_6 – Constructo – 1/58 scale - American privateer
@SaltyScot Good to have you back Mark. Thanks for the kind words. I'm a little dismayed looking at that sole chainplate, but we will rectify that soon enough. (Only 17 more to go 🤣🤣🤣.)

Well, my hiatus is over and it's back to the ship world. I see your ship got some "company" Steve. Now everybody wants some too You have certainly made some good progress while I was off doing other things, very nice she looks.

Finished seizing the shrouds to the masts, quite happy with the way thet turn out. Not a blob of rope like on my frist builds , or should I say a blob of CA. Lol.
I even remembered the Burton pendent, but Hornblower was quick to point out that I fogot the two on the Mizzen mast. He says to tell @Keith Black that I have lost my mind.. Not only did I forget the pendents I also mounted the ship to a swivel base so I can spin it around eazlie, I can hear Keith now yelling NOOOO !!! Also Keith the Harriet Lane is a soiled hull. I have looked at several logs here for it and hope I can do as well , I know for sure I will have the time of my life being a river boat man again lol.
Hornblower says my plan for keeping the shrouds in order has a flaw , if the colors clips fall off , and they did lol.
Kurt says we will figure it out, so we got all 30 deadeyes blocks together and are off to make up 30 lanyards to tie them all on.
Couple of weeks lol.
The first Mate garden needs my attention, patotes to dig, tomatoes to make into soup and sauces, canning, got to help if I want to eat. Ha ha
This one starting to be fun, looking ahead at making the yards , some neat stuff there I have never done.
She going to look grand beside the Duchess of Kingston in one case beside me favorite chair lol. Thanks for helping an old man have so much fun. You guys are the best, thanks.
Talk soon

Thank you, Keith. That character is what drew me to this project in the first place. It's been fun trying to replicate that character from the original photos.

You're slowing down in your old age, Bob. Is your Harriet Lane the old solid wood hull?

Keith Black got a reaction from Cast Off in Belay Pins
I dated a girl that fits that description. Name was Robin but everybody called her Bob. Not exactly sure what attraction I saw in her, her crooked smile, the glint in her eyes that she got after a couple of drinks, or maybe it was the way she handled herself with a belay pin in one of the many bar fights at the Tall Ship Lounge where I hung out with old salts that sang sea shanties till the wee hours of the morning..........but then I digress

Welcome aboard Willi. It's rare to see a museum quality model such as your Swedish yacht actually under sail. Well done!

I got a few items's checked off the list this past week.
Added the stair railing.
The stair railing was the moat time consuming as it was mostly trial and error
Added control lever and steam pressure gauge in the pilothouse and it's now permanently attached.
Added the water tank, exhaust pipe, steam whistle, drive shaft (as much as can be seen) and step over
Thank you to everyone for the likes and for your support, I appreciate it so very much.

Thank you @Keith Black , I have to thank @Gabek for the figures, he made them for me and he even showed me how to paint figures. what a buddy to have.
Speaking of buddys , remember when @Literalman posted three things to give away, one being a Harriet Lane, well I was lucky enough to snag it up. I told Stev before I will write his name on the bottom of the Harriet Lane , so he can always be part of the build, and I will rember his generosity for ever thanks Stev.
I just got to finish rigging a few ship and I be on it lol.
Bob M.
P.S.
By rigging, I have The Pegasus, an Astrolabe and two Bluenoses to rig. So it will be a couple of weeks.

I figured out most of the lines I needed to serve, and quickly served them up with my drill attachment. I need about 23 feet of .75mm. I also served 8 inches of a 1mm wire for the Futtock Shrouds. That's it all the sevring is done. The machine seems to be holding out , I won't be needing it anytime soon. My next build is a river boat so no need for it there. , I have one more in my stach , but I don't know about serving lines for that one we will see.
Two eight foot .75mm , one more to go. Lol 😆.
With the lines served time for some figure painting. After primer I looked on line for naval figures ,found lots but no idea of rank and who's who lol. So I painted them like this, took them over for a shot of clear coat and they all fell asleep in the box waiting to get to work.
The guy with the horn must be Hornblower lol. He woke the officer's up and had a meeting with Kurt.
Now that is all out of the way time to start working on the lower main mast shrouds,
Thanks for looking in, ratlines are in the air.

Hello Mike
It's been a while since I built these RC models, but I'll try to answer your questions as best I can.
I have a preference for boats with square sails. This presents a problem. If the braces are shortened on one side, the constantly changing angles cause the brace on the other side to hang loose. To prevent wooling, I use a system developed by a member of the mini-sail group.
The principle is a wraparound sheet to which the braces are tied. This circulating sheet can be installed below deck, but there are other options, as the drawing shows.
The drawing shows the steering of the sails on the foremast of the Chapman frigate.
How exactly the technology is installed depends very much on the options offered by the model.
Some examples:
This picture shows the technology in the Chapman yacht.
The following pictures show the technology installation on the cutter "Le Cerf." The sail winch is installed in the companionway, and the circulating sheet is led forward and over the deck through small holes (not yet installed on this photo). All braces are led from the bowsprit onto the circulating sheet. The foresails and mainsail have their own winches.
Different models, different solutions.
There are a few things to keep in mind with everything.
The circulating sheet has a winch with a double spool. When one spool is wound, the other is unwound. Since the circulating sheet is wound onto the spools in multiple layers, the length pulled out changes with each revolution. To compensate for this, it is important to equip a block with a spring at the turn point to keep the sheet taut at all times.
This could look something like this:
Not all systems always work flawlessly. It has proven advantageous to run the circulating sheet above the deck. This provides easy access and makes repairs easier.
I can't remember how many times I have rebuilt or completely replaced the entire technology in my models. Over the course of several decades, it has continued to evolve, and the development continues. Time and again, problems have to be dealt with, such as winches that are too weak, brass angles that are too small, too little travel, or lines that wrap around a cannon or a beting.
Nowadays, I actually spend more time sailing than on repairs. It used to be the other way around.
The Chapman schooner, in particular, sails quite reliably. Perhaps I'll figure out how to upload a video of it soon.
Here's the link to a video of the Chapman schooner:
Herzliche Grüße
Willi

Welcome Willi. MSW is a great site to explore and enjoy this hobby, plenty of inspiration and advice to be found with like minded enthusiasts. Your models are superb!
I also echo Dziadeczek's and Mike's enquiry about details relating to those big questions on waterproof finishes, ballasting and r/c sail control.
Cheers,
Graham.

Hello Thomas
Thanks for your interest.
Regarding your question:
After some experimentation with different varnishes, I achieved very satisfactory results with a polyurethane resin, which can be purchased in Germany under the trade name G4 from Voss Chemie. When applied in several coats with decreasing dilution, it provides good protection against water. It's transparent, so you can still clearly see the wood structure. The only drawback is that it has a very high shine.
This can be remedied by applying a coat of matte stair varnish after the actual varnish has cured. This should also be based on polyurethane resin.
A fiberglass mat was laminated on the inside with epoxy resin.
