Like Greg said Brother, there is no hard and fast rule, in general, you try to build in subassemblies, hull & maindecks, some painting needs to be done before assembly... Superstructures are assembled and painted in the same manner you add the details that don't get in the way of painting.... Overall assembly, add all the little details that make it pop.....
And all ship models are different.... that's part of the attraction is trying to figure out the best way to go about it.... It's definitely not a follow the numbers game like it was 40 years ago....

lmagna reacted to CDW in McLaren M8B by CDW - Accurate Miniatures - 1:24 Scale
Looking ahead just a bit, this M8B kit comes with a nice set of molded styrene seat belt buckles. Recently, I searched for and bought some different colors of 1/8 inch ribbon at a fabric store. The ribbon should work perfect with the buckles to make a great set of seat belts for the model.

Evening all, good progress today - I painted the Goalkeeper then a couple of coats of shading wash then dust then highlighting, then it was glued in position - this finishes the turret.
OC.

Mike I paint all the fittings before gluing them in place, just hold them in self gripping tweezers and air brush them, then fine detail with small paint brush. 👍

Nice PE work!
Can I ask - how are you planning to paint the deck items with the wooden deck down? Do you have a mask? My current build has a linoleum sections of the deck with appliqué type stickers from Hasegawa, but I was planning to wait as long as possible before installing those deck sections to avoid having to mask.

Hi,
Struggling to find time at present but have managed to finish the next house. May take a break from the village for a bit as my stash of part completed models needs a bit of a sort out.

Nice start. That gold accent really yells 50s at you!
That engine and tranny probably weighed half as much as a full modern car!

Not certain what scale they are but from here they look pretty nice. The Birdcage still seems to have those rounded edges of the typical diecast though. Not so much on the Maserati except where the riveted fuel tank mates up behind the driver.

I must have only seen cheap diecast. They always seem to have giant seams around where the doors and opening panels meet. But then I suppose that could be the six inch thick layers of paint they all seem to have.

If I remember correctly the process required looks fairly easy but in practice not so much. It operates fine but to get a tight panel to panel fit is horrible. It is better just to glue them into the open position.
Your build is already taking on the aspects of a masterpiece!

The etch superstructure for underneath the bridge wing is quite an impressive piece of engineering, well done to Pontos on this, can’t believe the tolerances are so fine, nice challenge though, first part, the main structure, folding is crucial, the folds marked for 180 degrees although tiny are very important, that are the fixing points for turned brass bracing further on, yes there is a hole in the end of the bracing to accept this. Suggest fold and glue, then continue folding outer edge, take your time. Also further on in this fabrication, the steelwork supports at each end of wing needs your patience, make sure you understand how it comes together. Advice watch when gluing this to bridge wing, the fit is perfect, but watch out for it being fully home all round, if a corner is not fully located your steelwork won’t be 90 degrees looking from the side. I had this problem, fixed it by using some superglue skin Debonder, then using blade to pressure it fully home. Hopefully that helps someone following behind. Some photos of instructions for you to ponder over.

Is there a formula you use to determine when it is time to quit gluing and start painting?

If you go with the LED bulbs they draw so much less energy and produce no heat to speak of so you can go up considerably in "wattage" and not overload the lamp. I have one lamp in the house where I put a 150W equivalent bulb in three years ago and it is still working fine running pretty much all day every day.
