I am not certain that any frigate would be considered a beginner's kit, but at that price I think it would be safe to say it is a good investment even if you hold it in reserve while you build  a couple of other ships for practice if you want.

Just a personal observation. Your skill level may be at a level that you can start with the Victory and make a nice model. Others have done it.

Hi Folks, I know it's been a while since I update the progress of the USS Panay - so adding some photos here for those that are interested.   I still have a far amount of work to do but I'll get there eventually!

currently I use PLA+ which is not at susceptible to heat as regular PLA but for ships that would be painted black for authenticity I would choose ABS or ASA, but if they are painted white they tend to do pretty well.  I've tested some hull sections made in white PLA+ by putting them out in the sun and left them outside over two years and they were fine.   However one of the hull I painted in green and exposed it to the sun during summer warped pretty bad withing an hour.  small thin detailed parts that are not painted white or light brown for instance should be abs or ASA otherwise they will warp or deform.  I don't use PetG as it's more difficult to sand out the layer lines and the region I live in usually doesn't have alot of sun and heat. if you live in arazona pet G, asa, or abs would be necessary

Hi Yves, technically the hull is assembled but it's not permanent at the moment - I use heat-set inserts and machine screws to join the sections and to ensure things line up right - once everything looks good I'll spread a thin layer of epoxy one the faces of the hull sections and screw everything together permanently.    Below are some pictures of the hull sections

Nice piece of hull that you printed. I wish you could show us some of the parts that were printed before the assembly.
I like the belt for the rudders. Very clever.

As you can see I've been working on the hull alot and figured out a way to drive the three rudders at the same time using a single servo since there's not much space in the aft section of the ship

I am sure glad that you were able to withstand the torture I was able to inflict by introducing you to this kit way back when we were talkin about my Flying Boat collection. It is by no means an easy kit to build and finish, but you have done it masterfully. Do you have another in mind in this series other than the Walrus?

Thanks for sharing and letting me be a vicarious part of your build.

Yea but I have six people living here on all three floors now and a guard dog and cat. (Well the dog is a Shih-Tzu and would probably lick you to death as soon as bite you but he does have a mighty loud bark. The cat on the other hand while only weighing in at 7 pounds dripping wet, you DO NOT  want to get her wet, would rip you to ribbons if I threw her at you!  Besides we lock the doors! We have a few guns around as well. The only problem is that these days they are all locked up and I am not certain if I have any ammo for several of them anyway. How things change after twenty years of retirement.

I have seen the airshow thing as well a number of times at different airshows. Try it at less than half that distance if that! Possibly Ken can tell us just how close they were allowed to fly to friendly aircraft while "Passing" and not get in trouble. Plus we had no idea any aircraft supersonic of not were anywhere inside of 25 miles from where we were until they were a dot in the sky again!

It will probably never sit in my hanger but I still think your F-86 has turned out fantastic with all of the fine detail and panel markings along with the bright Korean war colors. It is kind of like Mike and his silver with yellow wings planes of the 30s.

I've got too many irons in the fire. Very little time has been available for the tom kitty but the cockpit is nearing a finish with some minor details, a little detail painting, and a dull coat to finish it up.
Somehow I managed once again to see a small part go flying off into the netherworld, never to be found again (yet). This time it was a shoulder harness strap. Hence, the rear seat has no shoulder harness straps attached yet. I will not attach the gun site glass pieces until the very end before the canopy goes on. These are all box stock parts from the kit, no aftermarket used at all.

The way I'm thinking about doing the ordnance, I'll be able to switch out to whatever loadout I want. My plan is to use some micro size magnets to hold the ordnance in place on each pylon/station.
I learned this technique watching a modeler who builds on commission. He uses this to mount all the weapons and other fragile pieces because they tend to get broken off in shipping. Everything he builds has to eventually be boxed up and shipped out.

I'm back ! Medical issue is under proper management for now.

Once I get past a few out of state high school graduations and a few assorted doctors appointments,  we'll be back in the model shop. I did manage to get the vegetable gardens planted when I came back. The flower gardens exploded into bloom while we were gone.

Today it hit 90F and climbing. Normal highs for this time of year in this area are low 60s F to maybe 68F. Ugh !

One possibility that I considered at one time was to take the Revell Pine Island and suspend a 1/72 scale flying boat over the ship below in a diorama. Or you could make it an emeny ship or sub instead. The difference in scale would provide a distance factor giving a "plane eye view" of the ship below.

AH HA I have accomplished my evil influence!

The BV-222 would certainly be a large model and the Emily would be a challenge even though you say that much of what you need is available.

I prefer to keep all of my flying boats in the same scale, as in that way you can compare them to each other. You can also add Seaplanes, (Float planes) if you wish but I have never had much interest in those aircraft except for a few civilian models, I always liked the Cessna 170.
