By the way Augie, when I got my first car at (13), my dad gave me a choice of a '57 Chevy 283 2 door hard top or a '62 Chevy Belaire  2 door bubbletop, 409 2-4's, 4 speed, I chose the 62.....either car would have been incredible, but the 409 was a fine choice.....got lucky wish I still had it....they are now rare antiques....I wonder if that makes us rare antiques.....don't know about rare, but definitely an antique!  the Buick's were lot's of chrome!  Memory lane again

The first 4 rows of plates are on. Working with the thin foil is tricky as is spacing. Trying very hard to maintain a brick pattern and it also gets tricky. It' better as you move away from the keel. The joint where the keel and the hull planking come together is difficult in that there is also a bend in the plateto follow the hull lines. With some work I think it is acceptable....at least I hope so. Not perfect but not bad.

Hi Dave, so far it's been a strike out. Let me know if you find something also. I'm trying to get a nice piece of natural Mesquite from a lumber mill close by. He keeps telling me he has what I need in his kiln, however, it never seems to be dried yet. Don't think I'm going to get it before I leave though. So this will be next year's project. I still have a little bit of touch up to do to it....like maybe an hours worth of time, but I keep putting it off. Will probably get to it when, during or around the same time I mount it to something. Rectangular bases don't interest me much either, but I might have to resort to that.

Hello Edwin, welcome aboard.  Congrats on acquiring the Morgan.  It's fun to build.  Hope you'll start a build log.  I highly recommend and encourage you to do so.

Not a lot of progress so far today. Preparing to plank the anchor deck, so, I installed the eyes, bullseyes and actually ran my first rigging......this being the Mainstay lines, which attach to the bullseyes and go through holes in the anchor deck then up and around the mainmast. That was interesting, actually quite different than with plastic because of the strength of everything...not fragile yet. Then after finding some nice chain to use for the anchor chains (the kit chains were way too small, I cut and fixed the chains in their proper places, through the anchor deck and out for the anchors to attach to later on. The chains will wrap around the windlass 3 times, then lay on the deck back to the anchor chain pipes located just aft of the Mainmast and not yet installed. They will then go in the holes made in the pipes to below decks, probably into a chain locker.

For anyone interested, attached is a video of the re-launching of the Morgan today 21 July 13.  This marked the 172 anniversary (I think that is right, I'll verify and edit if necessary) or the original launch of the ship.  This has so far been a 5 year restoration process.  It was re-christened by the great, great, great granddaughter of Charles W. Morgan.  The ship will sail again in the late spring of 2014.  This was cool to watch, and I'm sorry I missed it, as I won't be there for a couple of weeks. It's surreal to watch something like this, where one is building a scale model of history, yet can observe this in real time today.  Amazing.

Sorry if I wasn't clear, John.  The method uses 1/4" copper tape which is self-adherent.  On my 1:64 the individual plates are 11/16" long but they're laid down in lengths of 4 plates each strip being 1/4 by 44/16".  There are some photos on pages 1 and 2 of my log but the narrative was lost back on MSW 1.

    The tutorial gives the specifics.

Hi Wayne, thanks for the comments.  I realized that the hunt came from Mark Taylor, and in a previous post I've apologized to both of you.  Both of you posted something almost back to back, and I picked up the wrong name.  Getting old!  lol

It leaves a matte finish so I am hoping it will take paint well.

Another brief note on Steve Priske, everyone...He's served as a 'Mentor' for me for a many, many, years now, and has also dedicated a HUGE number of hours for the benefit of modelers, and shipwrights directly on 'You-Tube', to share his techniques with a 'visual' effect...One of my all-time favorites, was his method of 'rigging Dead-Eyes' from One Side, without having to turn, or adjust your assembly...Pretty Cool...!!! - Again, check him out, and follow a couple of the links to his builds, and finished ships, for some fantastic info.  ( Incredible...!!! )  Kim

Hey Mates...!!! Thanks for the comment on the procedure John ! I wish that some of these forums had been around many years ago, myself...!!! So many brilliant, and innovative modifications & techniques that I might have been able to apply & attempt, that I had NO IDEA how to try, except for 'screwing up' horribly, and having to find a way to fix...!!! I'd like to post a web site address that I've used for YEARS, for a man that became so dedicated to the 'Art' of being the 'Shipwright'
he's very well recognized, and has given me personally TONS of inspiration in my builds... The site is ' http://www.tallshipsofsanfrancisco.com , and the gentleman's name is Steve Priske...( can be found just by 'Googleing' his name, in order to find his work...and discoveries...) He is TRULY a GRANDMASTER at ship building, in my opinions...His work is absolutely magnificent, at minimum....I'd look forward to some feedback on his work, if anyone cares to share...??? Thanks Guys !!! Kim

You're coming along great, John. I just got back from a trip and took some photos of my Morgan as I said I would. The pictures are not very good because I was having trouble with reflections from the glass case. I'm attaching the best of what I took. I hope they're of some use to you.

I have not had much time this week or last to work the build. I did mostly finish the camboose by completing the camboose floor (I think that would be correctly named). While in Boston I looked at that area carefully and was surprised to find no brick at all. Instead the floor consisted of a solid wood frame and metal shaped and hammered out to the inside area of the floor. This made sense to me since embers from the stove would be disastrous on the wooden deck and the metal is more easily seamed.

I started with brass micro-tube stock and cut 'V' shaped notches appropriately. Then I bent it into a frame and soldered the frame. Next I tried heating and melting a plastic ember tray but that did not work. So next I shaped  .001mm brass and soldered it into the frame. After cleanup I blacked the structure. The result is below. I have not painted it yet.

As long as there are pictures, you'll be ok, Augie.       I was looking for something Shakespearean to post like "heavy is the head that wears the crown", but not finding anything.  The rigging table is probably a good place to be anyway.

Sitting at the same table as Sjors can be a dangerous proposition even without me flinging mud all over the place....

I just knew changing tables would present problems.  Being too close to Sjors can be a dangerous proposition.  Ah, the mantel of responsibility that comes with rank.
