texxn5 got a reaction from Elijah in US Brig Niagara by mikiek - FINISHED - Model Shipways - Scale 1:64 - First wooden ship build
Hi Mikie, I think those are just holes for running the Stays through. You might check out my pictures of the real Bowsprit on my website - I think I show those as I took a lot of pictures of the Bowsprit back in June. Just a thought for clarity. She's looking good, keep up the good work. I drove up to the Bentwater gate and turned around today taking my little red car out for a drive.

I've added an engraved nameplate to finish things off. I represent the engraver, so anyone with custom needs let me know.

Well, my belt sander came in Friday and I've completed the base, mounted the ship to it, and I have a 3/16" scale Sperm Whale that I sculpted to go alongside the ship along with a fully fitted out whaleboat complete with sails. the whale has been harpooned and lanced and tied alongside. I am now officially finished. The base is a slab of wood cut from the Bowsprit of the real Morgan, obtained from the Dupont Preservation Shipyard, Mystic Seaport, Mystic, CT., rough finished and Satin Varnished to protect it.

    I'M DONE!

Anyone interested on the steps to accomplish this can find all the details in my website BUILD LOG - PART VI at the bottom of the log as well as a lot of photographs.

THANKS GUYS - IT'S BEEN FUN!!!

I dug the wood slab for the base out of the garage and photographed it. It is a slab cut from the side of the restored Morgan's Bowsprit. The photos show top, bottom and roughcut Bowsprit from the Dupont Shipyard in Mystic, Ct. This is not finished yet and will be a couple of weeks yet. I have to get a belt sander for finishing it. It is 57"x15"x2". My understanding is that the tree this was cut from was a knocked down tree during Hurricane Katrina in '05 and given to Mystic Seaport to use on the restoration and preserve a 100+ year old tree. Quite a few truckloads of trees came to Mystic.

I almost forgot the Flags....Got them done today. The American Flag w/26 stars and the J&R Wing Co Flag (they owned the ship for over 50 years) on the Main Mast. Now she's done...I also fixed my scratch on the hull. The flags have a piece of aluminum foil inside them and I am going to attempt to gets some furls in them hoping the foil will hold them in place???? They were tricky to make since they are not part of the kit.

    THE MORGAN IS COMPLETED!!

today, I finished the Cutting In Stage and got the boats mounted to the ship. I have a couple of touch ups to do, as well as the base, but the model is completed. Tomorrow, hopefully if the weather cooperates I'll take her outside and take some natural light pictures. All details on the whaleboats is on my website, but here are some overall pictures. I can't believe she's finished....April '13 got started. In shock - not real yet! .lol

Managed to get the Fore Mast Braces completed, and moved to the Main Mast Braces. Finished the Main Topgallant Yard Braces. This leaves three sets of Main Mast Braces to complete the Running Rigging. This then leaves the Cutting in Stage and rigging the whaleboats to the Davits to finish up. Based on how I've been progressing, the Braces should be finished tomorrow, with the rest in the next few days.

Hello, just discovered your log. I'll be following along, she's looking good. I was aboard the Niagara in June of last year should you need anything specific as I took about 400 pictures with the modeler in mind. I think this might be my next build since I just finished the Charles W Morgan. I have a website devoted to the Morgan and a Gallery of other ships of which the Niagara is part of. Here's the link and let me know if you need anything specific.

Hi, John, thanks for looking in. I'm sure I'll be following your log before I'm done. 2 years into this so far. This shipwright is slow, but as someone else said, the wood is patient. Nice photo's by the way.

Hi Joe, looking good.  Let me know if you need anything specific.  I agree on the hardwoods and would highly recommend them in the areas you mentioned.  Contact Jason at Crown Lumber and he'll get you what you need....you'll be a much happier camper!

As I patiently wait for my replacement parts from Expo I decided to work on some deck structures to at least get something done. I've built the deck house and vegetable bin (a fiddly little thing) and painted those up. I also built the workbench, but am not 100% happy with it and will likely do it over (top is unfinished at the moment).

I can say after working with mostly boxwood on the Granado build I'm not happy being back on basswood for this one. There are absolutely some areas where I will substitute boxwood for strength, likely pin rails, fife rail and channels to name a few. Probably the skylight as well in order to be able to drill all the holes for the rods an not split the wood.

John, your photos are coming in handy, thanks! I still need to stop by Mystic next time work takes me through the area.

Hi Scoot, I just checked out your build. Doing a great job! You also have an awesome shop area. I'm going to retire in two years at (62) but until then am using a small hobby desk tucked in the corner of my office. I travel for work so for the last twenty plus years my employer, Principal Financial has me work from a dedicated home based office.

I see you know John. He's a very nice person and has answered a lot of questions for me and has also been a good source for some Proxxon equipment. My favorite tool is that X/Y table and drill machine. Well, I need to upload some more build pics of my Morgan and maybe I'll do that now!!! Take care and thanks for the info on the brass edging. Hello Nick, I'm a member here and also a sponsor. I have an internet business that deals with Proxxon. The Proxxon TG 125 is a very versatle 5" (125mm) sander. You can check out the specs on my website. You would need the 220v model and it would not be cost effective to ship it from the states to the UK. There is a Proxxon distributor in Germany and I understand that the UK users have been happy with them. Perhaps one of the UK people here on the forum can tell you how to get a hold of them. My website so that you can check the specifications is:

Hope this helps, if you need a small high quality tool, you will be happy with this one.
