Don9of11 got a reaction from Capt.Rick in Brig USS Enterprise 1799 info gathering
When I was building my model of the Enterprise which was the kit by Constructo (#80822) I came across a couple publications in my research. The first was an article that appeared in the winter 1999 issue of the Journal Of The War Of 1812 by Michael Bosworth. I don't think this paper is in print anymore so if you would like a copy let me know.

The second, was an article I found on a website I believe was called The Ancient Mariner, again I don't think this paper is available anymore either.

And thirdly, is a book you can download from Google called "The Lucky Little Enterprise" and Her Successors In the United States Navy 1776-1900 by Fredrick Stanhope Hill.  This book is also available through the Internet Archeive https://archive.org/details/luckylittleenter00hilliala.

I have some photos of my build here

I recently learned about a browser based 3D CAD program which is able to run on Windows and Mac platforms as well as mobile devices.

    https://www.onshape.com/

This program offers a free version and a paid version. So I signed up for the free version and quickyly learned that my 10 yr old 64bit computer's Radeon graphics card does not support webGL which is required to run this program on your web browser, tablet or phone. Also, your browser must also support webGL and most modern web browsers like Firefox and Chrome support this feature but some browsers disable this feature because of performance issues. I learned too that some graphics cards are supported and some are not. The program from what I can tell is in a Beta production status. Despite all these various requirements it look's like a vary robust 3D CAD program.

Here is a link about webGL

Sketchup, when you created the stem, keel and stern post, did you incorporate any taper or did you make the same width? I look forward to seeing how you run the rabbet and your hull surface.

I spoke with a Solidworks CSR on the phone a few days ago. She said that the $20 student version for Vets is renewable annually for the same $20 price. Also, Canadian vets get the same deal by providing a copy of their NDI 75 or CAF 75 cards. I expressed my concern about supplying my Social Security number on the DD214. She said that you can redact any sensitive PID (e.g., SSN) on the DD214 or other ID cards. All they need is confirmation that you served, were discharged, and that you are who you say you are.

Alan, when did you switch to Inventor? I have heard good things about it from a guy I work with. He say's in many ways it's better than SolidWorks. I have to admit after working with SW 2015 for about 2 months now it has many of the same core issues it had 15 years ago, but there have been some nice features added. I know this has nothing to do with your model but it save me from asking whether you are using splines or not for laying off your hull sections.

Well I completed the hull shaping at each station line.
Have to complete the stern transom shaping.

I think I will draw the frames, and this time extrude between them (rather than lofting), then slice and dice into individual frames to make my templates... which was were I was before the crash.

    Almost there.

    and btw

July the first.... Happy Canada Day, eh!

shaping the hull at the station lines
going much quicker than the first time
and the line work is much cleaner

It pays to work smarter... but learning to work smarter means you have to learn in the first place

So my computer crash was an opportunity after all.

Completed the 3D layout of the top timberline
Now I can begin to layout the frames at the station lines (again)

Managed to get a good start at the top timber line 2D layouts
you can see both in the image below
yet to fine tune (extend) the side view (sheer) so they are presently construction line until done

Since we will be having a wonderfully stormy weekend I suppose I might get it done tomorrow (???)

Well I managed to get my Upper and Lower Breadth Lines drawn

I plotted them on the Breadth Plan (bottom 2d view) and then again at elevation on the Sheer Plan (2d side view) and finally projected them to a 3D line from those two views (the green lines)

One step closer to drawing the frames (again)

First I must draw the top timber lines.

I had some feed back on my layout... I chewed over the suggestions a bit and looked at some other plans and models. as recommended.
Of course most of what you want to see on models are covered up in the photos.
Images don't seem to ever show that one detail you want or when they do it disagrees with both what you did and what helpful people are suggesting.
In the end I made some changes to the pieces that comprise the bow assembly and the rising/dead wood and its connection forward and aft.

    Thank you for the help.

EDIT NOTE: dwg removed and update posted 15 NOV 2015

So I've completed the first template drawing and will be getting it printed out this week

I have labelled the pieces to help me remember the names.

I have also sketched the five waterlines at elevation.

This was done differently from the first go around.
The first time I had plotted it out all on one level, having sketched each section line as painstakingly measured from the Body Plan.
Then I compared the two by inspection from the top view... they were quite different.

This time I intend to use them directly in the shaping of the station templates.
I also relaxed my measuring... using my trusty triangular scale with 1/4" = 1'-0" scale on it
I can comfortably read to within a 1/2"

I am getting into the tough part now... how to plot the upper and lower breadth line in 3D (everything else has been 2D).

I won't bore anyone with the steps (as I am not quite sure of them myself yet)
But I hope this version will be simpler and quicker.

    So far so good.
  15. Thanks!

Alan, I've been giving some thought to your work and not to through a monkey-wrench into your thought process but consider my hasty attempt to produce the stern of my ship. I have produced three images which I hope illustrate my idea.

Consider how the transoms are shaped as they come up the stern post and using water-lines connect them. In my images I actually went above the wing transom, stop short of the keel and carried my imaginary transoms to the middle line vs. ending right on the stern post. I know the transoms don't go that far down but I did this to illustrate my idea. I used frame 36 as a guide curve and I have a little gap in my surface-lofts.

Is this not what you're trying to achieve?

I was at an estate sale today and picked up a copy of The Bounty Trilogy - Wyeth Edition by Charles Nordhoff & James Norman Hall for $1. It was originally printed 1932 and this copy was printed by the Grosset & Dunlap, Publishers with permission of the Little, Brown and Company, 1945. It has some nice color illustrations and the book consist of the stories of the Mutiny On The Bounty, Men Against the Sea and Pitcairn's Island. The inside cover contains a map of the route taken by the Bounty's Launch and the back inside cover a map of the Bounty's route. This should make for a good read.

I also worked on my new fangled Plexiglas goose-necked shaped support plates.
The Plexiglas was taped (I used painters tape) and the shape traced onto it.
The sheet was clamped down securely and the shape cutout using a special Plexiglas cutting blade.
If you don’t move quickly enough the plastic melts and sticks back together or leaves a blob of material on the edge that I found was easily removed.
The edge was then filed smooth and sanded (various papers, scotch brite pad, micro fine pad).
    I then polished the edge.
The final step was to wash the piece in warm soapy water.  I used Dawn dish soap. If it’s gentle enough for oil soaked water fowl it is good enough for my work.  (Never use glass cleaner or such products on Plexiglas).
Finally I cut out my slots in the wood frame, installed the T-bolts to the table and assembled it in place.
    Easy, right?
Well here is what went wrong…
By the time I worked on the second sheet and frame things started to go south.  One of the slotted wood uprights on the second frame was installed backwards (slots out) and the space between the two slotted uprights was a wee bit tighter so my second sheet is about 1/16” too wide and needs to be filed down to fit… hence no pictures of the bow support assembly as yet.

While merrily working on my frame templates I suddenly realized I was putting in upper scarph joints that likely overlapped the gun ports and sills.
I drew in all the gun ports and sills as measured off the plan and the contract.
This showed many of my upper scarph joints to be in or overlapping the holes.
    These were removed and/or relocated.

Below is a small sampling (I turned off all other frames) ... you can see the joints in the one frame (all others are turned off to make it clearer)

I managed an hour to make another "goose necked" prototype support plate and re-attach the lower stem piece to the keel.

In my dealings with Druxey yesterday he had mentioned how the usual fixed position support plate had managed to leave a sun bleached mark on one of his stem/stern post assemblies so another plus to the adjustable support plate height would be to reduce this bleaching effect caused by lighting.  I would never had thought of that... I was just attempting to allow the area to open up if I needed to get my big clumsy hands in there!
