Just a light update... been working on frames. Have several cut and test fitted and all reference points marked.
The pics below show how I'm solving the issues that plagued me on Version 1.0.
Since all measurements are referenced to the build board, I've added a tab to each frame to securely locate that point (green arrow). After I cut in that part of the frame, I fit it and re-measure, re-refrence the other points.
One set of points is where the deck clamps need to be so the red arrows show those. 1/8" deck beam, a 1/8" clamp and 1/16" inch plank will put the deck height were it needs to be. This particular frame is #1 and thus, there's three decks.. lower, gun, and forecastle.
The blue arrows reference the outside dimensions of the gun port cutout for the sill to sit properly. I'm using a 1/8" sill and when they're fitted I'll finesse them to be exact.
The black arrows point to the line for the wales. These are small cuts into the frame and filled with colored glue to hightlight They only demarcate the transition line from wale to planking and vice versa.
The black arrow with the white fill is the cutline for when this beast is finally cut from the build board. A top rail will sit on top of this line.
I'm going slow and careful to avoid dong wrong what I did the last time.

Sjors,
A compound miter is a miter in two planes; both a bevel and a miter. Think of the miter needed to install crown molding or the miter you need on your planking at the stem. You need an angle to match where the plank meets the stem but there is a second angle running towards the inner portion of the ship. Am I explaining this ok? I can see it in my head but never had to describe one.
Here is a picture of one, maybe that will help.

Another excellent choice is Costello which looks and acts like boxwood but is less expensive, It takes stain well so you can get the color you want. Costello is from South America, mostly from Paraguay.

Should have no problem. However always make up a few test samples and try out the way you want to do it. That way you will know what the end resul will be.

When using filler it is better I think to prep the deck. That way the deck will not get stained. Once trunnelled you then smooth and scrape the deck and refinish it.

Thanks J and Sam. I finished planking the deck today and got it sealed. I'm still deciding whether or not to give it a thinned coat of light stain.
I'm going to try to simulate treenails with filler after it dries. Is it best to oil/poly first and then do the treenails or vice versa? Or does it even matter?
Here are some pics of the finished deck.

I have used birch dowels successfully. They work easily, look good and and the color looks right. I have read of using something called "yellow wood" for spars but do not know what it is. Another one I have read about but have no experience with is sitka spruce.

Hello All,
I have finished the first layer of the hull, filled and sanded, came out not bad tbh, Might add a little bit of filler around the Bow.
all though i was adding 2 per side per day,, the last few was 3 due to the small size, a
any ways this task was done..

My first grate! I used a comb for a jig to get started, then I laid out the first course, then used scotch tape to hold them together and flipped it to add the last course, then used a 3x5 card to lay it on wax paper for Sjor's diluted PVA glue bath. Hooray....it worked.

More power to all of you who do that fabulous mini carpentry work. Your stuff makes me envious. I struggle to get these thing straight, level, square, etc. Here's the deck hatch I had to figure out from Constructo's very confusing drawings.

Thanks Patrick
I need the template but also my own measurements.
As we are saying in the house.....komt goed ( free translation ....everything will find his place )
No comment on that Grant !
And I have to believe you Sam ???????
@ Jason,
When I see this I understand what you are meaning.
It is a slow process but ok, it has to be done.
I take my time with it.
And because it is wood, you can change things when it is wrong.
Just what i was saying to Patrick.....komt goed !!!!!

Mark, Dan, thats not sawdust, those are little tiny granules of Retirement Induced Contentment and Happiness! Your R.I.C.H!
And now a question. Are each of your frames made of two layers with the joins off set or one layer with half lapped joints? I enlarged the photo and for the life of me I cant tell.

Good point, Wayne. That should take at least 256 blocks, 512 eyebolts and a boatload of rope coils (not counting the breech lines). Good fun

The stuff I have has a light brown color to it. It might be a slightly different species or a different part of the tree. I got mine years ago at a local furniture shop.

Rich,
Augie brings up a good point. Halogen bulbs are a slightly different temperature. Check out this page if interested. http://www.lightbulbsdirect.com/page/001/ctgy/colortemp

It's great to have all the light you need in the shop. Just watch your colors --- they can appear very different depending on the light your using versus the area you intend to display the finished ship in. I can't speak for halogens but I know that natural, fluorescent and incandescent all give you different appearances.
