Sponge and Mr Surfacer 1000. Coat 1. I’ll do several coats before colouring it.

It's great to see you back, Gerhard. Seems computer crashes with resulting mass destruction of data isn't uncommon. Buy yourself a backup drive for the new computer as it can be a lifesaver. Been there myself and having a backup saved me time and anger.

Hi Friends!!
Nice to have such a welcome back!! Next thing to do for me is to save all my pics from this thread back to my PC, and then have a new restart. Fortunatly I "save" most of my pictures in the building reports, so I can have a good base for the build. CU soon with new pics, when the "old things" are saved!
Best regards
Gerhard

RGL, you set the bar really high with your works - I never stop to admire them 🙂
Some historical things: armor was low in water 'cause ships were overloaded with coal - they had to travel from Camran' to Vladivostok without a chance to replenish the stores - Port-Arthur was lost and Tsindao was a trap and Germans weren't quite happy to let our fleet in. It wasn't a coastal monitor - without coal overload those ships were quite a sea-going vessels. Service of Tsesarevich ( Grazhdanin) and Slava was definitely adequate.
Concerning low quality of these forms - IIRC they are from 90's and their developer was Eastern Express - Zvezda didn't develop Borodino line - only bought those old forms.
It's very touching to see a foreign colleague having an interest and building something from our history ( even so painful one). Thank You !

To add a bit - in 2-nd Pacific Squadron were in fact ships that were coastal monitors indeed - Admiral Ushakov, General-Admiral Apraksin, Navarin - our sailors called them "self-sinkers" ( самотопы ).

Another primer coat and no gaps. Can start adding some more things now and do the lower hull.

I’m really hoping this is the worst part of this build, trying to align the un alignable. lots of filler and sanding to go.

So WELL!!!!!!!
I`m BACK!!!
That means, I`m back for model making, after some other troubles to handle. But now i am well and ready to have a new start with the CaIRO first to build. I`ve re-read where I was with the build before, checked the started ship, no breaks and no failures till now, what is important for the upcoming things to do. BUT: By a computer failure i`ve lost all the Bob Hill plans, so if anybody has them, would be great to have them back! I will have to rescale the paddlewheel, most of my former 3D Drawings are lost too. But I can still work on the hull, planking is to make, and I can work on the guns . All the barrels are drawn ready for the 3D printer, so there will come more in short time!
Best regards
Gerhard

Actually, Lou, they are from my stash of finished figures from prior kits that did not get used.

Wow Jack
That is some fast painting on all of those figures! Mine seem to be taking FOREVER!

While the Admiral and I sit in solitary confinement here in the Hermitage I completed the staining of the base (cherry over basswood) and applied 2 coats of satin poly. Did a first pass at weather the half-track and made a pass at the layout. I had to use modeler clay under the Infantry soldiers feet to get the to stop falling over as soon as I placed them. The entire base will be covered in an earthen material and other appropriate accessories including some oil drums, jerry cans and perhaps some discard ammo crates. I am still trying to figure out how I want to represent any collapsed beams inside the church walls.
But here's some progress photos
First the half-track
First pass at diorama layout (could change) I might change out the two "passengers" in the Jeep too. Maybe a guy manning the machine gun, if I can find a figure in my stash.

cog reacted to Steve Harvath in Hydraulic Dredge by Steve Harvath
Here is the dredge machinery laid out for a test fitting: centrifigul pump, engine and condenser. Second image shows the Westinghouse high speed engine and the condenser. . These models are more representational than actual models. I tried out various machine colors on them. I don't have actual specifications for color. I still have to figure out how to represent the piping. Any advice would be appreciated.

Sorry for the bad joke, but it looks like a goose in the oven ...

I have begun to model the pumping machinery in the dredge. I discovered a set of drawings of the steam engine that I am sure was used to power the centrifigul pump. Westinghouse made high speed steam engines at the turn of the 19th century. They were mostly used to drive generators which is probably why Westinghouse got into the steam engine business. The engine is a two cylinder engine with an enclosed crankcase. The cylinders were simple. Located between the cylinders is a valve cylinder that is canted off at an angle from the vertical steam cylinders. This shows clearly on the plan of the dredge. The pump is very big -- around 9 feet in diameter.

I went on to plank the sides and the machinery wells at the bow and stern. There is only 18 inches of freeboard so not many planks show. I have started to add the rubrail as shown on the plans.

The company name is Russian, only available now on Russian sites, and Soga Minatures takes PayPal and is kinda English language friendly.
the kit on the other hand! I thought it was completely malaligned, then I realised the deck has a seam that warps it completely out of alignment. As there is a stick on deck to go this won’t be seen but it really will need a lot of clean up. So I cut the deck at this seam and will have to remove a few mm as the the wing turrets won’t fit

So the last Zvezda kit I built was the Dreadnought. I forgot how poor the quality of these kits are compared to Tamiya or even Trumpeter. Clunky. The gunnels are 1.5mm on starboard and .5mm Portside. At least the plastic is soft.
making a start on the PE on bits I won’t have easy access to once I start putting the sides on.
the coaling scuttles are from the Pontos set as none were included in either upgrade set, and the bollards will all need replacing. There are buts sticking out which might be bollards or might be windlasses or even vents, I just don’t know
