  1. Started removing the molded on railings. The goal is to build the model like a scaled down version of the model in Pearl Harbor.
  2. I will watch your build intently, as I have the Tamiya Fletcher in my stash and plan to build her as the Kidd. I will use your build as a guild when I get the chance to build her. Great job so far! Wish my work bench was nice and clean like yours.
  3. It is looking really good Popeye and I agree with Steve that you are too hard on yourself. Be proud of the great job you are doing. Can't wait to see more.
  4. Harley, I got that illustration from Wikipedia, under Arizona Memorial. It is very basic, but it gets the point across. Thank you for showing your interest in my build.
  5. The image on my previous post is what I will base this build. I just came back from the copy shop and here is results.
  6. I have done some research ahead of time, probably more than a year, but this is the first time the model has seen the light of day in a very long time. The explosion lifted the armored deck and when it came back down a lot of the ship was no longer there. This explains why the forward mast was bent at such an angle. The port bow section is bowed out. The main deck much lower forward of where the superstructure was, and the keel must be fractured near the bow.
  7. I decided to start a new build log based on the classic Revell 1/426 USS Arizona. I will be creating a diorama of the USS Arizona as she is now with the Shapeways memorial scale model. I started by removing the decks from their sprue and assembling the basic model. I only need the two hull halves, the two primary decks, the first secondary deck, two turrets and one set of guns. I traced the outline of the inverted hull onto a piece of cardboard. After measuring the length and width, I printed the drawing that I will base my build on, on legal size paper. Now I just need to take my plan to a copy store and have them match the size for me. Once I have these copies, I can match up the model to the drawings.
  8. Well, have done some image hunting and came up with these as plans and what the model should look like. However, I may have to start my own build log, as to not step on popeye's Arizona's toes.
  9. Thanks for the welcome and advise. I once visited Pearl Harbor and the Arizona Memorial back in the '70's when I was 12. I bought the book 'Tora, tora, tora' and the Revell model kit as souvenirs back then. I still remember the huge scale model of her at the memorial. But then I saw online a large scale model of the memorial and the Arizona as she is now. That's what I want to model. Model Shipways makes a 426/429 scale version of the memorial and is on my wish list. I have a kit of the Arizona in my stash, just waiting!
  10. I have worked a little on the Nina. Mostly preparing for the next steps. I want to plank the decks and the hull. I started to build a plank stripper, however it did not work so well. The edge was not cut straight and will need to be sanded. I painted the edge black and will sand it on a piece of glass. I also started making rings out of wire. I need about 45 rings on eyebolts for this kit.
  11. First off, you are doing a stellar job on this build! And secondly, if you need any parts off this kit, let me know. I'm planing on using my kit to build her as she is now. This only requires the hull, main decks, the second deck, and two turrets. The rest is up for grabs. I have been watching your build only recently and have enjoyed your hurdle jumping. Keep up the good work, and like the frog choking the crane, 'never give up'.
  12. Thank you all for the warm welcome! I did start a build log in the plastic kits, please follow along.
  13. This kit was regularly $33 and I could not resist the purchase at 70% off. I wanted to start with some kind of plans to follow and found these online. I want the basic look to be like this image. I started with the the decks. I did not like the fact that there were three decks. So, I removed the step between second and third decks, and the molded on ladders section. I combined the two decks and cut a piece of styrene to extend the main deck. I worked on the hull halves next. The interior got the ribs removed as they were too many and too small. I also removed the deck locator pins as well as the extractor pin marks. The rudder was removed to add a tiller and a hole was cut for the tiller. The exterior halves got the cannon holes filled in with sprue, the locator pins for the anchors were removed, and some material was removed to allow for railing. The plans show about 40 rings attached to the deck. I will try to make these true to scale, these will be very, very small.
  14. I will start my first build log on this forum with the Nina from Lindberg's Ships of Columbus. I found this kit at hobby lobby on clearance for $8.
  15. We'll see if I can post my first photo, I got The Ships of Columbus by Lindberg on clearance for $8!
  16. I started modeling many years ago and have decided to get back into the hobby. I will blow the dust off some of my stash or build something new, anyhow, I look forward to posting a build log on this forum soon. Wish me luck and follow along.
