As I stated when I first started this build, I was hoping for practice for my phantom...i installed the top rail today in one piece and I have to say it went better than I thought it would! I also installed the splash rails...rub rails next and the hull is pretty much ready for paint 😊

Welcome! I too am a kit hoarder lol...I’ve just started and I think I bought every kit model expo has put on sale over the last 6 months under 150$, so literally 15 plus kits (from solid hulls like the phantom, to Charles P. Morgan). I truly believe POF and POB are completely different animals then solid hull kits...I am still fresh to the wood boat world and also think plastic models are completely different many ways as well (better instructions, pieces designed to fit into each other, etc). I speak from little experience (I’ve only finished a Dory and a Bounty Jolly), but honestly if you build every kit in your set and don’t finish any of them, atleast you hopefully had fun and learned something. Museum quality is a wonderful goal, but I know I couldn’t do that in my first kits, if not ever. It’s a hobby...have fun!

So instead of using the card stock image for the exterior of the pilot house and main cabin I decided to drive myself nuts and use the smallest of wood possible... i happen to think it looks so much better. I also installed the remainder of the rub rails.

Had some fun installing the bulwark stancions...eyes crossed now lol I also cut the scuppers in so that was fun! And since this is not a real ship anyways I’m doing a little modification regarding where the rub rails go...to be continued.

I have a Charles Morgan on the shelf, but I certainly need a few more ships under my belt before that one gets started! If I was retired and had more space, I’d probably have more builds going on lol. At one point I was trying to schedule the work for my boats and that was a disaster...took the fun right out of things. I believe once I finish these build logs I might enjoy building one without a log. I’m kind of embarrassed with the amount of ships I have in waiting...probably enough to keep me busy for a few years!

Beautiful work! I agree with you both regarding pins, I agree try rubber bands, perhaps build jig/spacer you can rubber band against? Always have to problem solve with this hobby, after seeing the hull you started with and where you are at today I know you will do just fine.

Well I haven’t given up yet lol. I got it on there after glueing it back together. This hobby has taught me so many things in such a short period of time. Patience being one...enjoying a hobby for two...and sh*t happens, so deal with it lol

I decided to do this because my decking wasn’t wide enough from the kit.

I’ve decided to make my own decking by scribing...any ideas about the best way to highlight the seams? Also how should I get rid of the fuzz?

Guess I spoke too soon as it snapped off as I tried to glue it to the boat...I’m getting quite frustrated with this repeated failure. Wondering if I should do it in a larger single piece of stock, or if I should follow the original instructions and do this piece in two pieces.

This turned out way easier than I thought it would...using the Dremel with small sanding barrel helped as well. Traced it onto tracing paper, glued with rubber cement and sanded to contour or bow. Now I think I will glue it on before I do final sanding...

After reading every log known to man on this site I decided to do what “sald” had done in his log, hopefully if I take my time it will work. I also used CA instead of wood glue...we will see
