capnharv2 reacted to rwiederrich in Great Republic 1853 by rwiederrich - FINISHED - four masted extreme clipper
Reviewing some of my detailing...I owe an explanation to some why I use so much paint on rigging and such. From my own experiences and from that acquired by way of serious study...it was made clear to me that much standing rigging was coated in a heavy preservative. I've even assisted in its removal on the real McCoy. So, I've adopted the practice of coating my seizing's with ample preservative (paint).
I hope my lazy, quick-shod technique of covering a multitude of sins is not a deterrent for the more ardent discrete of you. I truly am standing(or sitting at the work bench), with some of the most skilled, detailed acute, modelers ever assembled in one forum, and to have as many likes and positive comments about my build is truly amazing to me...I am deeply humbled and moved.
Thanks MSW friends.

capnharv2 reacted to DORIS in HMS ROYAL KATHERINE 1664 by Doris - 1/55 - CARD
Thank you for your comments, Michel and E.J., and also to you all for the support and "likes".
Today I have finished nameplate, its base and letters are made out of card, the frame is wooden. I tried to do it in the style of English Restoration approx 1670 (the frame and small ornaments) and you can also find there initials of authors - me and Captain KL who helps me to achieve more realistic results and gives me professional advice how to do things correctly and better.
That's why you can watch here a completely different build of the Royal Katharine than those that are based on modeling plans - unfortunately, in many ways, fictional.
So enjoy the pics and have a great time.

Dziadeczek: Thank you very much for your praise, I am pleased you like my work.
Now the pedestals are finished and placed under the huge hull of the Royal Katherine. Enjoy the pics and have a great time.

Rounding up a few more finishing details...like rope coils and paint touch up and adding the lower topsails reef points....then its time to move onto the main course.
This is the largest sail ever bent on any clipper's main yard....no wonder her original crew number was well over 110 able seamen and 30 boys.
With the size of these sails...you needed lots of hands.
Pretty soon there will be three masts on her.......

capnharv2 got a reaction from mtaylor in Straightening thin brass wire
I've had some luck with annealing the wire before stretching it. Heat it till it turns red, let it cool, then try pulling on it.
It's possible the wire on the the roll is already work hardened, and will hold its current (bent) shape.
Hope that helps.

While building the sail I opted to simulate the addition of repaired panels on the sails...to give some realistic perspective.
Still have lots of control lines to run along with the belaying of buntlines and sheets..not to mention the downhauls.
Once sail down and the main course left on the main mast..

After this task...I built and set the lower topsail.......once done I had to rig more blocks for its control.

Next, I rigged blocks for lifts and sheets for the lower topsail.

Spent some time today wrapping up some belaying of roya/topsail control lines before I begin to work on the lower topsail.

I'm also toying with the idea of vacuum forming the billows and then gluing them together at the buntline seams...this idea seams to have great possibilities. Then the final product will get a good coat of paint.
I can create wood molds that I can then put in my vacuum former to create the pieces to form the entire sail.......
This idea sounds good too......
Oh my mind is a whir of deep cosmic transient thoughts.......
Something genius will pop out I'm sure......

capnharv2 got a reaction from popeye the sailor in Great Republic 1853 by rwiederrich - FINISHED - four masted extreme clipper
Rob,
One question about the pictures. The planking between the waterline and the sheer of the original ship appears to be uncaulked (in the second picture, it almost appears lapstrake). It also seems to protrude (or maybe cover) the wales. I wonder if this was an additional layer of planking while she was a receiving ship?
Is there much information out there for the years she was a receiving ship? That would make for a fascinating model.
Thanks,
Harvey

Thanks to all for your complimentary comments and for the additional info on the dorade vents.
When i made the first set of "screws" for attaching the vents to the side of the cabin I used a commercial pin vice that is the traditional one that allows very small diameters down to basically 0 the way it works is a bit hit and miss being a shaft with a couple of cross cuts. This took a few tries each time to get the pin properly centered. I also used a file to reduce the diameter of the pin head and basically did the work by eye. Knowing that when they were assembled in the vents the slight variations in diameter would become obvious. So I decided to make a small pin chuck specifically for these pins. I used a bit of 1/4 inch brass rod and using the collet chuck on the lathe turned down the shaft to fit the new micro drill which is 3/32. Keeping some of the shaft at the 1/4 inch in order to thread the opposite end for the locking collar. This was then reduced and threaded 8x36. The threaded end was then tapered about 1/8 so that the locking nut could work to clamp the threaded end.
The threaded end was drilled with a hole the same diameter as the pin to a depth of 5/32 then slit lengthwise with a .010" slitting blade. The shaft end was drilled to the pin hole with a #50 drill as a relief and to allow the pin end to close.
First picture shows the chuck with the locking nut off. the lock nut was easier to work with the flats filed which allowed a wrench to tighten it instead of my finger and thumb (which got cut on the sharp edges hence the flats)
The cross cut is more visible in the next picture. I cut enough pins to complete both sides. By using the collet chuck and the new pin vice it enables me to complete a single operation on all the pins knowing that they will be concentric for the next operation.
The pins stayed concentric in the new chuck.
The heads were turned down to .93mm which turns out to be just under 5/16 actually closer to 19/64ths in diameter which is very close to the diameter of a #8 round head wood screw at 1:1
The next operation I will shape the round and then slot them using a different pin vice and a block of wood to position the jewelers saw blade as in the next picture.
I will set up the boxes with a slot on the bottom and by bringing the vents up it looks better than having them cross the panel reveal.
That's all for now.

This should give me some Ideas. l received this in the post today.
I know I only have one mast but this will expand my knowledge.

Working through detangling and assigning the royal and topgallant sail control lines...I will give them special attention running them down through the top fairleads at a later date... Now the fife and spider rails are in and collecting their specific lines.
Slow going...but after I spent a week working on my wife's hair dressing station...I'm going to focus back on the build.
I'm finishing up the Port side...then, I'll flip the model round and have at the starboard side. So much to do.

Thank you Nils, Amalio, Richmond and Rob, your praise and comments mean a lot for me.
Thank you all for likes and support as well.
I have just finished the panel with swords and other weapons from that period and also tried to make other hand guns according to real replicas.
Here is the result, enjoy it:

You are welcome, Richmond.
Hello Mark,
I am pleased reading your words, thank you very much. I enjoy making realistic models of various things - sailing ships and sport cars are my favourite objects.
That is so nice, I am glad I can bring people pleasure and joy. Thank you for your kind words, Richard, they are much appreciated.

I've finished the chairs (also made an improvement with their design) and other accessories for the great cabin, they are still without paint - I am going to paint them after finishing all pieces of furniture.
Best regards
