Guys, thanks all for your congratulations! It is really heartwarming to be asked to do something like this. I have some bad news now.... ready? are you sure? ok.... There isn't much left to this build log! I am nearly finished!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Time to catch you up. I added the sail to the main mast. I then added the traveling rod right behind the binnacle. Next I added all of my blocks to the mainmast. I added the flag block to the jibboom. Then I put the rigging on while the sail was still raised....I figured it would be easier to make sure I did it right since the drawing shows the sail unfurled... Then I added the rigging to the traveling rod and the rest to the gaff. Then I added the strings for tying the sails.

ok I think I have it. Thanks guys!

John - thanks - I'm feeling pretty pleased so far. Harvey, I just know it stains teeth so I figured it would stain a sail really well (also I don't like the flavor and needed to use the pouches) but it did smell good until I thoroughly rinsed them.

let me see if I understand.... The red part is connected to the eye bolt and then goes all the way around the block then (gradient to orange) goes through the hole in the lower block then through the hole in the upper block then down? Harvey, I've had a few blocks that have 2 attachment points on them, but this is the first time the instructions used this term...I suppose that may be throwing me off.

What is a becketed block? In my instructions it says that the Gaff Throat Halliard uses a becketed block. My instructions are below. My google search just showed me normal blocks...... Thanks in advance

I've been so busy playing with my ship that I've not updated my log for awhile. Lets start with the IOU's Wayne, here is a photo of the dead eyes going into the sponsons.... Keith - here is the penny with a completed ratline for persepective When making the ratlines I used this cardstock comb that I made to keep the lines separated. Ok, so I finished the 4 sets of ratlines. Now that I've finished the ratlines (phew) I'm on to my next challenge, furled sails. Thanks to everyone who sent me photos of furled sails -that helped a bunch. The local club gave me some silkspan to use (which is lucky since the sail cloth I'd bought from ME was way too heavy for furled sails.) and I cut and died it with earl grey. I found that wetting the silkspan gave it a more realistic weight so I furled them while they were still wet and they held that shape when they dried. I'm going for the look that they've just been temporarily tied up, not the fully stowed perfect bundle that they do when they are fully storing the sails. I am working on running rigging tonight

There are those who have vision but lack execution, and those who have fantastic execution but have no real vision - they can only do what is on the instructions....you, my friend, can do both amazingly well. I know its been said dozens of times over your 28 pages here....but your little details truly make the boats amazing.

Thanks Tony, it was REALLY fun. I'm saving the pieces for the frame and will do another sometime, maybe with some more exotic wood!

Haha, Sjors, don't worry, I'm skipping 3 ratlines for every one I tie. I'll go back and fill those 3 in afterwards so that I don't get a "hourglass" look...I learned that trick from the rigging part of the forum Hope it works.... so you'll see lots of them.... there will be 21 ratlines on each side on each mast on the lower shrouds.

Wayne I did drill into the sponson for the chain plates, but just the very edge so it was no biggie....I'll take a closeup for you in the next couple days....when I am home for longer than just enough to sleep. Keith, yes, tiny, my eyes hurt too! I will do a penny shot just for you. I wonder if there is actually a shot called a penny......hmmmmm there is one called a "copper penny" with ice, one ounce of amaretto,a half an ounce of white creme de coco, and milk...sounds good. Harvey, its a neat idea, however I'm already too far in on one side and I'd probably have to take the shrouds off completely to do that...also that would be TINY wood....like ship in a bottle splinters! hehehe. Maybe when I do something a tad larger. Guys, don't forget to submit photos for the calendar! (See the general discussion for the link).

The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal.
