  1. Good evening mates…another small boat completed and installed on the stern davits. A few touch ups to do, mainly a couple rope coils then on to the next task.
  2. Good afternoon mates. Today is problem solving day. The problem: my small ships hang from lines attached to the davits; however, my small ships are not heavy enough to weigh down the thread I’m using. This makes the display look, well…off or not believable. (1st picture) A solution was recently presented to me by KeithS, another Terror builder, to use some sort of weight to to straighten the lines (2nd and 3rd picture), then soak them with glue to make them stiff. Once the glue dries, maybe the lines will stay straight making the hanging ships more realistic. (4th picture) I used a 180g stone coaster as my weight. The 5th image is a before and after. I think KeithS solution works. Your thoughts?
  3. Good evening all, not a lot of time today to work in the shipyard, so just spent some time on finishing details. Just a small ladder up to the ice bridge.
  4. Good evening mates, I’ve been spending a lot of time, more than I had planned, making rope coils and getting them installed. This has been a huge chore and I’m glad it’s done. Here are some completed shots.
  5. Keith, great to hear from you! I have been thinking about this very thing for some time. I think you might be on to something. I’ll give your idea a try!
  6. Good evening mates. While I have a couple more small boats to build, honestly, I’m tired of them 😬 so I thought I would tackle the rope coils…here are the first few crafted.
  7. Good afternoon mates. I have completed another small boat, number 7 of 9, and have it attached to its steel davits.
  8. Good evening, today I had some time to finish the hardware (steel davits and hull protection bar and brackets) on the port side and get them installed on the ship. Next project, clean up the shipyard and build another small ship…which seems to take days to build 😊.
  9. And…a bit more work completed. Hung a small boat from the steel davits and tested the theory of the bracket and bar crafted in my previous post. Once the small boat swung freely from its davits, I pushed it up against the ship and sure enough, the rail protected the main ship from being damaged (second image).
  10. Good evening mates, todays project is a bit of a mystery; however, another modeler (KeithS) came up with a theory that makes a lot of logical sense. In the image below is this steel bracket that KeithS suggests mounts to a rod that protects the ship from a swaying small boat hanging on the davits in this area. The Terror is protected from swaying ships mounted to the wood davits at the stern by the main and mizzen mast shrouds. The steel davits I have added as described in historical literature are positioned away from the foremast shrouds putting the ship at risk. I have run with KeithS theory and crafted something similar…the second image below. And finally attached to the ship positioned to protect it from damage when I mount a small ship.
  11. Welcome everyone, it’s been a few days since my last post. As many of you know, when the Terror left England on her last voyage, she departed with two sets of steel or metal removable davits closer to the bow. Eventually, when the Terror took on supplies not long before she was last seen, the captain chose to send these steel davits back to England on the supply ships. Not sure exactly why…to save weight? To alter the ships performance? I have chosen to add this feature on my version of the Terror. Below is how this part of the project is going. I plan to hang a small boat on each side of the Terror from these metal davits, which counts for just two of the nine small boats that the Terror carried.
  12. I hear you, I’m still trying to figure out what to do with the next four…but my goal is to have a representation of all nine small boats when finished.
  13. And…continued visual progress. Third of nine small boats attached. Well, really the 4th of 9 since the largest small boat is lashed to the deck.
  14. Good morning all, I finally finished the rigging of the sails which allows me to move on to the next task. I decided to start hanging the small boats from the davits. Here are the pictures of the first one, one of nine small boats that sailed with the Terror.
  15. Good morning mates, more work on the running rigging and final sail on the mizzenmast! I see light at the end of the tunnel.
  16. RichardHD, I thought about doing the sails in silkspan, but ultimately I hand sewed them from model ship sail cloth. Spent many hours designing the sails with the appropriate doublers and panel width, learning how to sew and use a sewing machine. In the end, while they look great, not sure it was worth all the time 😬.
  17. Hello everyone, today I spent nearly all day working on the gaff and driver sail! I had no idea how much work went into this one Sail! One more sail to attach…for another day.
  18. Well mates, it’s been awhile since I made an update, but I have been busy on the Terror, just not a lot of visual progress. In this update I have finished the running rigging on the main mast…can’t believe how many lines need to be run and I’m sure I have missed some.
  19. This is a spectacular build. I'm getting ready to start my own Amerigo Vespucci and will frequently review your log as I build mine.
  20. Good evening everyone. While I know I have at least a month of work remaining on the HMS Terror, I have been keeping an eye out for my next project. I more or less had decided on a couple of possibilities and the Admiral surprised me with one of my choices for our anniversary…the Amerigo Vespucci by OcCre 1:100. I will finish the Terror before starting the Vespucci, but I’m already ordering and thinking about all the upgrades 😬.
  21. Good evening mates, as promised, here is an update of the main mast and it’s primary sail. Slowly taking shape…
  22. Good afternoon mates. It's been a while since my last post. I've been working on the main sails. I can't believe how much work goes into the sails before attaching them to the ship! I'll have photo updates soon.
  23. I knew about the slight curve of these grates; however, not having holes next to the ledge and coamings…that’s new info to me. I’ll consider this detail on my next model. Too far along to change this one!
