I present, for your inspection and critique, my completed rendition of the Canadian Schooner Bluenose.

I tied the last knot at 1730 hour MST this evening.

Just to add a bit of authenticity and acquire official approval of the model, I asked my neighbor to come over.  He, being from Canada, inspected the model and gave me a thumbs up.

From start to finish this has been an adventure.  I am very pleased with the Model Shipways Kit and the quality woods and especially the building manual.  Granted, there are a number of improvements that can be made to any kit, but overall this is a well thought out product.

I’ve learned to bend and shape various woods, sew sails, and above all patience!

My next step is to complete the display case and mount the Bluenose.

To all of you that have followed this build and provided instruction, and inspiration, I thank you.

well hello everyone thanks for the comments on this thread, well i got the 18th century long boat for my step dad he was very excited when he got it, i didn't know that he had done model ship building when he was younger
unfortunately many years of being a butcher and blacksmith has taken its toll on his hands and arthritis wont allow him to do small detailed work, so he gave me the boat to build so ill build it and give it to him when I'm done
in the mean time i still wanted to give him something so i made this sign for his blacksmith shop its the first wood project i have ever done and completed. i used my dremel to carve out the silhouette and hand wrote the phrases then used the dremel to carve the words, ill give it to him this weekend i have to get it sealed first. so it turned out good anyway
thanks for all the kind words

well the hull is fared finaly so now im moving onto the false keel
as you will see i used the template gauge to make sure i had the right angle for the curve. the template and the hull match up pretty good but i figured this way was more accurate.
the only issue is when i soaked the wood and then put it in the pins to mold it instead of a nice curve i got two bends in the wood.
so i guess ill try Chucks method next any other suggestions?

they're 5mm but I had to alter the base of the cleat so they would fit on to the stanchions.

One of my near by hobby shops had some smaller cleats in stock which is kind of funny because they don't sell any wooden ship models. But I took a chance going over to see them anyway just in case and I got lucky. Although the cleats aren't as small as the plans show I think they'll work. I do have to do some modifications in order to make them fit onto the stanchions. In the pic I put the original cleat that came with the kit on the left and on the right is the new cleat, in the middle is one of the cleats  I modified. If for some reason I find that these cleats don't work I've done some experimenting with 16 gauge wire and was able to make something that would work if need be.

Having finished the hull construction together with the all major superstructure features, it was time to start phase number two, and that was the construction of the masts, the sails and all relevant elements.

The details involved are many, even if you decide to build a "simple version"!

To start with,  I started making some blocks. Admittedly, they cannot be compared with the blocks made by some fine modellers in this forum,  but the whole process was fun, and at the end of the day, this is all about it.
    The process is relatively easy:

Drill holes on a strip of wood at constant intervals, then cut the strip into pieces. For example, if the gap of the holes is  say 3mm, I cut the pieces with the same gap, allowing the hole to be at the beginning of each piece.
The grooves shown on the blocks was made before drilling the strip. It does not really add to the functionality, but at a later stage it will help the string to look better when it will pass through the hole of the block.

Needless to say that a drill stand and a compound table are necessary to do such a job.

Another element of this process are the various multipurpose rings as I call them, because they will be used in various  situations, as is, or as part of a more complex construction.
In the picture below, you can see how a broken drill bit  is used to shape the rings:
I just coil around the tip (with the pliers) the brass wire.  the rings are ready to be soldered...

Just a small update.I have fitted the thro railing uprights for the last two decks(to be trimmed to height later in the build).I decided to treenail the prow deck.Call me mad as it is 1mm gratings but it just looked too plain compared to the hull. After I had cleaned the filler out of the holes using a 1mm sq piece of boxwood,I discovered some of the filler pigment had coloured some areas in the holes.I quite like this and adds a bit of artificial ageing, good job as I don't fancy remaking the deck.I then made a moulding out of pear sheet for where the deck abuts the bulkhead, using a combination of shaped x-acto blade and my pillar drill set up with a dremel milling cutter. Finally I sprayed the assembly with one coat of Ronseal Mattcoat.
    Kind Regards Nigel
