 Margin Plank Photos

Only the edge abutting the Bulwarks has been shaped, and even that is somewhat roughly done.. will proper fit all at later stage, there will be a Spirketting or whatever that Skirting Board looking Plank thing is called, so to have an absolutely perfect bulwark fit won't be a high priority though I do want it neat as my 'deck planking' side measurement (in my case 6 mm width) will be taken off it as per Nigel's tip above.

The Plan photo shows my calculations for creating the Water Line, with the final line drawn on the hull in such a way that Heath Robinson would have been proud ! btw Tamiya tape arrived on scene today !

 Thanks for Looking in Folks.

 Quick Photo Update..

Hull is painted to about 99% complete, just touch-up's required now.

Next up for Ballier is to put those 'triangular' pieces between the Bulwarks & the Port/Stbd. Transom Frames, then get on with the Margin Doodah Oh Joy..

Incidentally the 'White Stuff' isn't near as severe as it looks in the photos, it is a very off white, but the Studio Flash brightens it.. honestly it does

 Thanks For Checking In

Doing the guns in repeatable mode saves some time, once the method is on track...
My work desk is quite a mess, since I have my own room and do`nt have to clean up during the day, and I still have 4 more to do.

Am thinking of adding small wooden splints to the axis close to the wheels, but shall do that as last Action

I've gotten the tie-downs for the lifeboats installed; the davits fabricated and installed; and the name boards in place. I'm waiting for some blocks from Chuck to finish off the block and tackle for the davits:

I don't know why the davits look uneven in the photo, but, trust me, they are all the same.

Mirabell61 reacted to SJSoane in HMS Bellona 1760 by SJSoane - Scale 1:64 - English 74-gun - as designed Mirabell61 reacted to SJSoane in HMS Bellona 1760 by SJSoane - Scale 1:64 - English 74-gun - as designed
 Hi everyone,

I continue to work on the stern, which proves to be the most complex thing I have ever built. Each piece interacts with several others, like a basket-weave. Nothing can be finally fixed, until others are fixed, which in turn depend on the first piece, etc. I discovered that even pinning things together doesn't entirely work, because the pieces move enough that fine fitting of another part is always off a bit.

So I decided to firm up the middle, with the rudder port chocks glued to the two adjacent vertical timbers, holding the center timber. With this as a foundation, the other parts can be fitted to something solid. That center piece was a bit tricky to shape, and I am showing a Sherline vise held by my bench vise, which allowed it to be held without breaking the open end.

I am also showing the helm port transom on the fore side of the timbers. Eventually, it will be cut in the middle, to come down to the top of the stern post. But I decided to keep it whole while fitting everything, to keep everything in alignment.

I keep thinking I am only a short time away from gluing it all up, but each little fitting of parts takes forever. Maybe next week....

 Best wishes,

 Mark

 Hi everyone,

To get started again, I will post again the photos I took of the original Bellona model at Chatham last year, with permission from the National Maritime Museum. This model is contemporary with the original design of 1760. The Bellona was rebuilt in the 1780s with some significant changes in port locations, refitted rail on the poop, etc. I prefer the look of the original, and so these photos of the original model are my roadmap through the project.

It will take me a while to summarize my own build starting with my re-drafted drawings at 3/16" scale, but I am committed to the task!

 Best wishes,

 Mark

The finished stern for now - I'll fit the three remaining Lights much later in the build, as they will be in the open position and may get damaged during further construction :

The Pilasters are of similar design to the Quarter Badge ones :

Thanks for looking in again, and the nice comments Geoff, Brian, Ben, John and Spyglass.

Sorry about that Spyglass, I didn't realize that you were up to the same stage . Besides, the construction of your Pegasus is quite a bit different to mine . You're doing a fine job.

 Ensign Staff Block and Clamp

There are a few more things on the taffarel that need doing prior to fitting the assembly to the ship. One of these is the Block and Clamp that hold the Ensign Staff, enabling it to be easily removed.

The block is stepped into the fore edge of the taffarel and has two small molded sections at it's ends,

The clamp is very similar to a Gun Trunion Cap, so I simply used a slightly modified spare that I had (I only had to enlarge the diameter of the half-hole slightly) :

Thanks again Druxey, David and John.

 Quarter Pieces

The Quarter Pieces on most Swan Class Sloops are elaborately carved, but the sheer plan of Vulture shows very plain ones. Whether this is correct or not I don't know - perhaps the draughtsman was just lazy . I've treated them in similar fashion to the Pilasters of the Quarter Badges and Stern Lights.

To overlap the joints between the hull planking and counter planking I hollowed out the pieces :

Some progress pics through the stages of fitting them up :

 Build log part 9

this is the last part of this build,

although the are some Little things I would like to add, or to Change next time I open the glass case

I was quite happy that the glass case fitted exactly on the wardrobe it is Standing on

the brass data plate is fitted within the case

Impression of the plating bow area

 and Stern area

this Position is concentrating, nearly interfearing on railing, funnel stay, steering chain, Davit tackle, but all is properly fastend to it own tackle point

foredeck is a nice Meeting place for Young couples

 foreseen anchoring place

the depth marking is made with regular Mirosoft Excel and to be printed out on one side adhesive transparent foil, or on Photopaper. Shall save this up to the next opening of the glass case, when the sternlight is also to be changed from green to White.

I hope the presentation of my Bohuslän build log was liked, even though the framing, planking and hull building was not shown in this case due to lack of photos

 Auf wiedersehen
