BANYAN got a reaction from Jeronimo in LE BONHOMME RICHARD by Jeronimo - FINISHED
That is so well detailed I am lost for words - excellent craftsmanship!
How did you make the fine detail on the bolt heads? Are they individually filed/made? If so, you quality control and consistency is remarkable.

BANYAN got a reaction from Aussie048 in Perseverance 1807 by Rodr - Modellers Shipyard - Scale 1:48 - Colonial Brig - first build
Good to see the model itself last night Rod; and I agree with Keith, that is an excellent effort for a first build - very clean and smooth finish to her. I think she will build into a very nice model mate.

Forget about the mumbling mate, the pictures spoke for themselves! An excellent job, the flickering light really enhances the model (which is looking great) - SWEET!!!!!

BANYAN reacted to Remcohe in HMS Kingfisher 1770 by Remcohe - 1/48 - English 14-Gun Sloop - POF
Greg, correct the blade has the same width as the index in strip. I made a second one for paralel cuts to make the beds for the sails. At first I tried to glue the battens with temporary spacers, but it wasn't as evenly spaced as I had hoped. cutting mortices for the battens made assembly a lot easier.
For the sails I first got a piece of silk used for model airplanes. Although the fabric is great I could not fold them neatly even with an iron I could not get something I liked. Pretty expensive experiment actually, now I have a very big silk handkerchief with a hole in it...... So thick tinted paper was used. The writing on the tally's are home made decals.
I'm not sure if I will build the other walls of the sail room or leave it open like this, I actually like it the way it is now having a better view to the storage racks.

BANYAN reacted to mtaylor in Licorne 1755 by mtaylor - 3/16" scale - French Frigate - from Hahn plans - Version 2.0 - TERMINATED
Wild cats and all... Willy in the background playing "On the Road Again". Anyway, here's an update.
Keel is ready.... keelson is being re-used. It's cherry and will be hidden so why re-invent the wheel.
The stem is just about there. I'm sorting out a way to make the caulking/felt lines better. There seems to be something (not sure how it happens) that when there's a very tight fit, the glue line disappears. A good thing? Or an aggrevation? The stem still needs some mill work for the gammoning holes and two (I think) through holes for the bobstays. The plans aren't clear on this and pictures from the article and the CD aren't clear in this area. Also trying to sort out the taper on this, if any.
I'm currently redoing the sternpost in boxwood. The picture shows the Version 1.0 sternpost and rudder that were never put on the old ship. I'm thinking about the rudder given the wood contrasts based on the test, I'm trying visualize if I should re-do it boxwood or not.

BANYAN reacted to garyshipwright in HMS Montague 1779 by garyshipwright - 74-gun Alfred-class
Well guys figure I couldn't let February end with at least a small update. Have been working on the cannons and a few other items such as the chain pumps, capstan along with redoing the helm port and upper deck transom. It seems the more I looked at those items the more I wanted to redo them and seems that that's what I did. Also added three more of the chain pump sprockets and not hoods along with the chain pin's for the capstan and drop pawl's. Did Montagu have the drop pawl's, maybe yes may be no, butt does seem that they were being used in the fleet as early as 1770 so figure I am safe adding them. Enjoy the photo's folks. Only 6 more 32 pounder's to add and the guns for this deck will be done. Gary

Good afternoon, everybody.
I finished another small order. This is the most difficult job, that I had. But very interesting. I very much enjoyed the thread.
This figure rooster for the French frigate «Le Francois».
That's how this figure looks in the drawings.
And here is what I got

I'm back from my trip, so I have continued some work with this boat. Over the weekend, I completed the standing rigging.
I have seized shrouds many times in the past, but I have never been satisfied with the results. This is the theory:
So how do you do that in miniature scale on a ship model? The answer is to use crocodile clips, like this:
If you can't see what's happening, I have created a series of diagrams that show how the seizing is accomplished. The text and pictures are self-explanatory.
This is the result:
I also added an eye bolt for the mainmast stay. Mackay's plans indicate that this was present, but did not indicate where it was attached - so I took a guess.
The boat as of tonight:
Next I should tackle the spars and sails, but I am thinking of buying a cheap sewing machine to help me make the sails. The sails are therefore on hold until I do a bit of research and learn how to sew on spare cloth. Neither can I attempt making the oars, because I want to reserve that for when my new lathe arrives. I suppose i'll just make the toolbox and a few other little accessories while I wait.
It also appears that I have run out of rigging thread. Let's hope that my local hobby shop stocks the same thread used by Model Shipways.

Hi all, My led project was tackled today amongst other things, quite a success.. I purchased a remote controlled 'led candle' off ebay for $11 delivered..
I gutted it and re wired and modified to suit, lost the progress pictures unfortunately.
Remote works from a bout a metre, but it will need some kind of 'line of sight' (you cant box the electronics completely if you want to remote to work properly.). It is housed inside the unit originally so it does work somewhat inside a model, but in a closed timber hull may be a bit much i think.. I get a pathway through my cut-away...
How long this setup lasts in the long term is unknown. But it will get used rarely.. And if fails its no big loss or can be replaced..
The light is appropriate looking, dim and flickers well... I may put a lantern over it instead of just a crude bulb... If anyone wants a link send me a msg i can provide one for Australian or NZ memebers..
NOTE - it would be safest to contain batteries in plastic bag or container in case of future leakage..
I had to make a video to help show the result..Excuse my mumbling.. Ollie

Hi gang.. i spent another 7 hours today.. my correct rudder parts arrived yesterday..

By all means Rod , if you would like to copy them , go for it . For the caulking I used a pencil as well . If you do use a pencil to simulate the caulking don't use any sand paper to smooth it down . All it does is smear the graphite all over the planking and is a nightmare to clean up . I used a a razor blade ( you can get a pack of 100 for $20 at www.mytoolstore.com.au ) or you can also use a piece of glass as well and scrap it smooth .I laid the planks in full lengths then marked the scale length when all had dried . The butt joints were made with a chisel exacto blade that was ground down to the width of the planks . then i simulated the butt joints with the pencil again not using sand paper but a razor blade to smooth it all out .Make sure the pencil is sharp .
Thank you very much Bindy for your kind words . Modelers Shipyard have great after sales service.

Beautiful work as usual Alex - I think you are right with the half-open door, looks quite good and provides the sense of individual parts, not a single/solid panel.
