Gabek reacted to Knocklouder in The Mayflower by Knocklouder- FINISHED - Amati - 1:60
Well my friends  I am dropping  the anchors on the Mayflower.  I have received  some books  that showed me what I was looking for about rigging.   Serving,  seizing,  puddening, oh my. I have never heard of puddening,  please someone tell me the Mayflower  did not have this lol. I know it up to me how far to take the details of my rigging.  I ordered  a Serving machine as  ,  I had a hard time making my own.  The machine is in Canada, tracking it now, be here on the 12th.  So now I got to do some research  lol, look for better pictures lol.
I can not tell you all how much fun I am having here on MSW. Light switches  are coming  on all over the place, and I feel I am not running around like a chicken with its head   cut off.  I am just not sure of how far to take my rigging. So I am putting it on the shelf . Not for long though.  Just doing research  lol
This will give me time to look at The NRG data base and  the one here at MSW, all the information you need to build a Model thanks so much So I will  see you all later  , but don't be surprised if I start another build log, to keep my mined off of rigging  lol

An update is long overdue, not that there is that much to report. Rigging proceeds, all too slowly. The bowsprit presents interesting problems. A few more thoughts on the question of a dolphin striker, for I still don’t understand why this did not make it impossible to set the spritsail.  Longridge has a possible solution in his fold-out rigging plan of Victory, by bringing the martingale backstay close up to the striker. This would surely have made it much less likely that the striker could hold down the jibboom effectively, though making it possible to set the spritsail. In contrast, the NMM model of HMS Mars has such a complexity of ropes from the striker that it would surely have been impossible to set the sail (https://www.rmg.co.uk/collections/objects/rmgc-object-66538). As for a spritsail topsail, none of the  drawings of Agamemnon by Pocock in the National Maritime Museum show one on Agamemnon, and I’ll not fit one.
The main and foretops are just about ready to fit. I’ll need to fit the blocks that go under them, which means deciding just how much running rigging to include. I’ll go for overkill at this stage, as it’s easier to fit the blocks and remove them later if they are not all needed, than to struggle to add them after the tops are in place. One point about stays. I’ve noticed that a number of models on this website have euphroes and crowsfeet. Steel, however, says that these were not fitted to large ships of this period, and I’m not planning to fit them. I found it impossible, incidentally, to lace the stays to the preventer stays by knotting, so as you can see, I have glued the connecting lanyard. It’s a bit of cheat, but alternative methods just did not work at this scale.
Oh - in the photo you can just see the bow of one of the ship’s boats, and a bit of the hull of another. I’ll be reporting on them later, but it’s been interesting to experiment with possible ways of making them.

I printed these at 0.03mm resolution in Anycubic ABS+.  If anyone wants the .cbddlp file created for these prints (with supports) just send me a message.

If anyone chooses to print these out I would appreciate a photo!

I hope you get the pest problem solved.  I'll ask a similar question as Keith.  What kind of pests?   I'm guessing somewhere between ants and relatives?   Different pests have different solutions. LOL.

Abandon  Shipyard !!!  Had to move all my builds upstairs.   Due to pests moving into the shipyard I have to shut it down, for several months. The family has been sick, but we are feeling better  all around. So I settled in on making the masts, and heard some scratching from the ceiling.  Yep , pests. Darn and I wanted to try and get my Pegasus done by the end of May. I was shooting for the end of May because that will be Three years that I have been a member of NRG and  MSW.
I have been having the time of my life. It is  just so much fun. I can hardly wait to get  better at this. I have learnt so much. At least I will be able to follow along with logs, it will give me time to catch up on some reading lol.
The first Mate  says to picture the enemy like this .
But it's not working , I am so depressed about not building models, if I did not have so much to do I would go crazy  lol. Talk to you all when I can , Sea ya.

Now, masts. These, of course, are not as straightforward as might appear, and I am sure I will get some things wrong. The photo of the main and fore-masts shows that I’ve taken the unusual step of making the sections below deck thinner than the rest, in the hope that this makes for a neater juncture of deck and mast. Masts changed in the later years of the eighteenth century, with the introduction of iron hoops to hold the various pieces of a made mast together. Woolding, however, was not abandoned, and I am fitting both, following the example of Pocock’s painting of the Glorious First of June (https://www.rmg.co.uk/collections/objects/rmgc-object-11962) which shows how the narrow iron rings do not go round the side fishes, and how the wooldings do. Plans of masts show the same thing. That at  https://www.rmg.co.uk/collections/objects/rmgc-object-86572 is quite clear. These lower masts are painted, but I’ll be leaving the topmasts as natural wood. The mizzen presents some problems. I’m inclined to make it similar to the other two, with larger gaps between the hoops and wooldings, even though  Steel says that ‘Mizenmasts and bowsprits have one woolding under the hounds.’  He also says that ‘The aftside of mizen-masts, in ships, and main-masts, in brigs, to be coppered in the wear of the gaff and boom.’ I am not sure what this means - if he’s suggesting a strip of copper down the whole length of the mast, I am inclined to ignore it. It seems more likely that the copper was just intended at the point where the gaff and boom fitted to the mast, and there was a danger that the friction would damage the mast. As for the bowsprit, I think that iron hoops (made of paper) will be the order of the day, with no woolding.

The trestles and cross-trees were a problem to make. At this scale, there is a danger of splitting and breaking the wood since they are fragile. So for the mainmast I used some of the wood used to make the stand - it’s Bahia Rosewood, and is very strong, but of course hard to work. For the foremast, I used as strong a piece of obeche as I could find; it was much easier to  employ. Either way, the trees are clumsier looking than I would like, but I don’t want to make them any weaker. Anyway,  they won’t be easy to see since they will be under the tops. Painted black, the difference in timber should not show.

The lower masts and bowsprit are now installed (photo below), and thank goodness, they fitted satisfactorily. The next phase will see the rigging started. The picture of ‘A Sixth Rate on the Stocks’ by John Clevely the Elder (https://www.rmg.co.uk/collections/objects/rmgc-object-12537) shows how it was normal practice to fit the lower shrouds and stays at this stage, and it will be much easier to do this now, rather than once the topmasts are fitted. For the rigging I will use what might even be the oldest rope-walk machine to be seen on this website - see photo below. It was inspired by a diagram in R.C. Anderson’s Seventeenth Century Rigging.  It’s a simple and very primitive gadget, made from Meccano, and features quite simply three turning hooks (made of garden wire), gears, and a handle. Originally, when first made in the late 1950s, it had pulleys and a rubber band to connect the three turning spindles, but gears proved more satisfactory. OK, it’s not exactly state of the art or elegant, but it works well for small models. It cannot do sophisticated things like four-stranded rope for the shrouds, but that does not worry me. There's no motor - the Meccano motor and transformer are long since dead - but winding by hand works fine.

We may have a winner, but the tail is up not down, looks good but not sure will wait till I get  the replacement from Amati .
So I have finished the mid deck assembly, had to do little improvising but I like it. The .5 black line did not go through the little holes  on the brass peices  but I drilled them out with a  small bit and it went well.

All the guns are on, the swivel guns look good, cannons are ok. So now just a few things left on sheet six, some blocks, eyelets, cleats and the channels left to pin on. Soon it will be just masts and rigging. Lovein it.

Thanks for helping build my ship, I definitel would be lost without MSW/NRG   to help guide me through it.
    Thanks for looking  in.

Today I rigged the tiller tackle, and blackin the swivel guns as well as painting the brass on the holders , for a lack of knowledge as to what the are lol. I think  the look ok, better in real life than the pictures lol 😆

So knowing  myself I took all the swivel guns off and put them away for safe keeping.
So nowI want to build the stairs and hand rails around them. Hopefully  I will get to the Mid deck bulkhead details as well as the bell tower today as well.
Having the time of my life, rigging is just around the corner  lol. Oh yes I have to build the masts first  lol.

Well in my haste to get the Pegasus on the bow of the ship, ya you guess it I am a neanderthal lol its in about four peices.  Lol.
So my daughter said she will buy me one for Xmas. I ordered it today lol. Won't be putting it on till much later lol.
So this is what I did to the tiller housing , copper roof lol. Then coppered the Bincale assembly as well.  I was not sure if I wanted the skylight red, so I went with black  with gold windows.

CM says it's time to start glueing things in place, before I lose them.lol.

And this is how it will look when she is  all glued in place. I have to drill all the eyelet holes, and make a few blocks for the tiller tackle.  I fitted all the swivel guns, now I will blackin them and paint them up a bit. But tomorrow  is another day lol .

Well this was my first attempt to put the timber heads on
After looking @vulcanbomber log , and finding peice # 228 this is what I came up with, it's a little shakey  but for me it will do.

I need to do some paint thouch ups on some of the black, that's the easy part  lol.

So now it's  the hull steps, a couple of walnut strips and sheet 4 is finished. Then time to do the stairs and hand rail. And I will finish all on sheet 5 next.
Thanks for all who post logs I find them very helpful as my reading skill are not my best quality  🙂. But hey I love my ships lol.
     Thank you everyone

I have a small update on Portland, I’ve been designing a QG for 3D print, this is just an initial test to check rigidity of the structure and if it’s even possible.

The QG will fit onto existing wood structure and should require a slight bit of finesse to attach to the hull.

The basic structure and shape of the QG will be printed, once painted the moldings, columns, windows and carvings will all be in wood, so the finished QG should be very convincing.

The model requires some revision but the basic idea looks promising so far.

Thank you to @Gabek for his expertise and print assistance.

Well I found peice 288, if we go back to post #39  when I build the ships boat they were in there with the bell. I could not figure out were they went on the boat. Well I guess I just put them away and forgot about them. I was looking at @vulcanbomber log, thanks for posting,  and the light switch came on. I can fix it now, to make it look like the pictures.  I knew I was doing something wrong but c' est la vie. I just found it tonight, so I will fix it tomorrow.

Now I am in to the fun part , all the deck furniture  and mast, which  leads to rigging  lol.  I even started to think about doing the masts but there is just so much to do and it all fun stuff.

That's it for today.  Thanks  for looking.

Welll the decks are installed and I am ready for the cap rails.

I have to decide what to do about my cannons. The kit gives you two options  one is just breeching rope. Options  two you have to buy more blocks and eyelets. So  I am going with  options  one.

Its been so much fun building this ship, she not the finest but she looking good to me.  There is so much on this model that is new to me and if it was not for the database  and the info you can get here on MSN/NRG.  I  would  probably just shelf it. But I  can't buy another till  I  finish the ones I Have. Lol

Thank you so much @allanyed.but I really just followed the instructions  lol. It just came together nicely.  Thanks everyone who like it .
so now the first  thing I decided to do was I had to drill all the hole for the eyelets ' so using an awl to start the hole I drilled them all. I super glued the drill bit to a dowel then attaching it to my drill the rest was easy. I got this Idea from @mtaylor log thank you.

I fitted the cannons with breeching  tackle only as they won't be seen.

You see once the upper deck is on its all hidden. Working away, I rigged 10 cannons  put them on and glued the decks on. Now you can't see all that work lol, but it was Amazing  take my word for it lol
I have to Thank @Gabek for his stove he made for my ship. I put it on and yep covered it up but it looks awesome. Lol.
So now I have 8 more cannons to rig, not sure what I will  do just yet,  in terms of how I will rig them, but now I can finish the  decks,  and oh yes my cap rails that's what I started out to do lol.

Coming along nicely  this is the fun stuff, won't be long and I get to do some rat lines lol 😆.
