  1. The Micromark Mini Scroll Saw is actually a rebranding of the German Proxxon DS 230/E scroll saw.

    This is the link: http://www.proxxon.com/en/micromot/27088.php?list

I am using this scroll saw for more then a year without any problem. In the beginning, it is a bit searching to fit the blade correctly, but then is works good. My intention was to use it for small tasks in model building, but I also started scrolling other things like fretwork and ornaments for the holidays.

One limitation of this saw is that the table cannot be put in an angle. Sometimes, I miss this option.

You will certainly find some reviews on the internet.

  2. DiKri, the way I read this new forum you mentioned, it wants you to join and then pay for what ever info you want. Perhaps I am wrong about reading the first page. Do you suppose that my idea could be worth something with those members

As far as I can see, you can read most articles in this forum without having to register. And even registering is free and of course necessary if you want to post something. You only have to pay if you want a subscription to the magazine or other publications.

  3. DiKri, Fabulous looking model, you must be well pleased with it so far.

Could I ask what stain you used on the hull and if any on the decking ?? Some leave their hulls pain wood, but from what I have seen I like the staining.

Any thoughts would be welcome.   Thanks,  JM

Hi JM. Thanks for your post.

I didn't use much stain on this model. For the second layer planking, walnut is used for the upper part, mahony for the lower part and dibétou for the deck planking. The wood was then protected with a few coats of mat acrylic varnish.

Only the darker galleries where stained with walnut stain from Admirality Paints and then varnished.

For the masts, I used a walnut coloured varnish (Levis Linitop).

  4. The DeAgostini Victory kit is indeed made by Artesania Latina. But I can imagine that there are small differences. I currently have the complete DeAgostini kit but did not start building it yet. What I miss the most in this kit are general plans. You need to find everything in the magazines.

  5. If you're having quoting issues or issues posting pictures, check what version of IE you're on.  If IE11, uninstall the upgrade and reboot to roll it back to IE10.

Within Internet Explorer, look in the menu: Tools/Compatibility View Settings.

There you can add the website that doesn't work properly with IE11 to the list. For the sites in this list, IE will behave as an older version.

No guarantee that it works, but worth a try...

  6. Hey Dirk

Not sure if something was lost in translation but as a wash, I meant a very thinned dark paint like 20:1 thinner to paint and using either oil based or water base based paints. You can try difference ratios of thinner to paint but this should give you a starting point. I and many others use this technique in military model painting to bring out details and then dry brush lighter colours on the highlights...but with this I would just add the wash and then wipe off the excess .

    I wasn't meaning a wax....

Hope this helps clarify my friend.

    Cheers

    Steve

OK! Indeed lost in translation. Thanks for the clarification Steve. I never did that kind of things with paint, but never too old to learn :-)

  7. Hey Dirk!

I have a thought for you to try if you like...have you thought about applying a dark wash to the gold details...this should settle in the low spots and highlight (accentuate) the highspots (details) ?

It might make the details in the castings stand out and be even more pronounced without taking away the golden look!

Just a thought...maybe to try on a separate piece...if it doesn't work just add varsol or alcohol depending on whether you use an oil based wash or a water based wash....

    Steve

Thanks for the suggestion. I will consider testing it. I don't have dark wax in the house now; so I will need to buy some first :-)

  8. I am currently collecting the De Agostini HMS Victory kit. The quality of the parts until now seems to be good. I could have bought the kit as a whole and much cheeper, but choose for this monthly kit because of the extra magazine, which I found, contains a lot a interesting background information.

Also, it feels a little bit as being a child again... waiting for a monthly package to open and explore :P
