When the President said, "You didn't build that!" I took offense since I had started several businesses. But when it comes to the USS Constitution I just finish......It's a correct statement....maybe my fingers and eyes put it together, but all of you who came to my rescue time and time again built it along with me. The advise started when laying the keel when many of you told me to keep it dead straight and the bulkheads square....and the planking....endless help from bending tips to shaping and placing the planks....Then the decks....tree nail advise.. just like gun rigging...terrific suggestions...Basic miniature woodworking...you all to taught me how to get the right tools so I could make straight and square cuts....You suggested the correct glue after I screwed up using the wrong stuff for months....your help with the standing rigging allowed me to get it mostly right.....the running rigging....I was totally lost in space and you all bailed me out during the whole process.....and finally....because I knew you all were looking....I tried never to cut corners or do sloppy work for I didn't like getting criticism. I can't tell you how many times I went back and did something over because you spotted an error or sloppy work......The best advise I got was one of you told me, "treat each piece you have to place as if it were its own model." So.... "You did so build it with me!" Thank you.

I'm moving my shipyard from the back bedroom to the garage. I built a nice big 4' x 4' work table in the center 3' high since I work standing up. Still a lot of work to do before it's operational. My Admiral is very happy to get the bedroom back after two years of ship building

As requested....here's some pics of the completed Connie. I have to laugh...all the work we put into the deck and guns, etc....and they wind up barely visible. Just like the hull planks....nobody (but me) looks down there.

I finally mounted the jolly boats. This effectively completes the ship.....but ...you know....and I know....I'll be "tweeking" her until I start a new ship. I still have to get or build a case.

Great stern! I had to make the quarter galleries the same as you. I like your results.

I'm slowly adding "stuff" to the jolly boats. I made an oar factory and added tillers & rudders. Also a Flemish coil mooring line. Thank goodness I have a monstrous scrap pile to pick and chose the floor grates, seats, rudders and oars from. They're still a work in progress.

Yes...they are just hollow aluminum "logs" with some outside detail.

I just installed the "VIP" seating on the jolly boats. The rowers are next. Notice my self drawn pencil sketched plans. Constucto doesn't show boats hanging from davits, so I'm on my own. I looked at several books on ship's small boats and came up with this plan.

I started building two jolly boats for the port and starboard davits. Even though I started with two aluminum cast shells from BlueJacket, There's a lot more work than meets the eye. The shells were a perfect size and shape with nice detail, but they required some "Dremel sculpting" to get them just right. I just finished the floor decking and will start on the seating, oars, block and tackle etc.

Thanks for the nice comments.....she's basically finished, but I'll be "tweaking it" for a little bit more. I'm making mental notes on what to do and what to NOT do in my next build. I learned enough during this build to fill an encyclopedia. You know...."If I knew then what I know now..." I'd have a heck of a lot nicer ship. You all bailed me out so many times I can't count them. Thanks!

I have a lot of tidying up to do, plus two jolly boats to be built and installed. Then a case to protect her. Also...I'll be moving my shipyard to the garage. So, the next model is off a bit.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
