chris watton got a reaction from Alexander Bulimov in HMS Surprise 1796 (prototype) by James H - Vanguard Models - 1:64
I think my final pics of my mule belong in this thread, too. Am very much looking forward to seeing what magic Jim works on her...
I am currently dong the full parts list (always fun...) and making sure every single part is assigned with a part number for the final production cut files.
At this time, I can confirm that for the first 100 kits, photo etched copper plating will be included as standard for this kit, with the only optional extra being the CNC blocks (because not everyone wants masts and rig and most are happy with standard anyway)
Some have asked in the past about including the CNC blocks as standard. This would be impossible for the quantities I order. You see, ordering just 30 Indy or Sphinx kits worth of CNC blocks takes literally at least a whole season, with the costs many times higher than standard blocks. So they will always only ever be an option.

chris watton reacted to yancovitch in Soleil Royal by yancovitch
ok....it's probably my last posting until finished, god willing........just wish to show the shape of the hull compared to the heller hull.....the decoration on the stem is temporary, until i figure out something better....and of course, still much finicky finishing to do...and compared to the mess on the inside, it looks ok on the outside 😁..thanks for looking....cheers,........................... vic

ok ok.....i think i just may be able to make it work.......had to narrow the stern top somewhat and fatten the bottom....but it flows ok..for me it's like making a clay sculpture...add some take some away etc...........the deck distances are less on the build up, but i'll just have to rely on craftistic licence i guess....i may try to shorten that decoration at the bottom, and make the gunport higher....we'll see...waiting for some swiss pear for the exposed planking on the gun decks....will use basswood for the rest, which will be whiteish or black......
it's sure a fun challenge, like searching my brain to find out what makes sense to me....what i can change, and what i'll have to live with....kinda like life 😄.....will only post occasionally, any major resolutions.....my right eye is getting blurry now......i hope i can make it through painting the gold....some guys here have done such a magnificent job, i suffer some anxiety over that prospect.....i mainly wish just to do the hull now, then back to finishing the constitution... i have to work outside of the retirement apts....i wasn't going to do any more wood....but i just had to try this, cause it was on the back of my mind for maybe 30 years....

I decided on including two stern options because the original is bereft of any decoration, not even pillars in between the windows - and I knew some would question this, after watching the film. (I agonised over this for weeks...)
So, as standard, the stern is slightly reworked to include pillars in between the windows, and also the shape of the windows have been given a little more 'flare' towards the ends. The reworked stern also has windows that can be posed open, as per the Indy. I have also worked both sterns so you can have the stern chaser ports open and a 6-Pounder in place if you so wish.
ETA:
Here are the profiles for Sphinx and Surprise. The Sphinx would look more like the film Surprise (which is based on HMS Rose, a 20 gun mid-18th Century ship, and exactly the same size as Sphinx). You can see the real Surprise was quite a bit longer, being 126 feet along the main deck.

chris watton reacted to AJohnson in HMAV Bounty by AJohnson - Caldercraft - 1:64
Evening all, I've been making steady progress with work on the masts, the Mizzen was largely done, so has just needed some blocks tying to it and a touch-up of the paintwork; the two sections are not permanently fixed so I can do the lower shrouds and stays easier. The bowsprit likewise is nearly done and has also had a refresh with paint and started the process of adding blocks etc. On the Foremast I had nearly done the lower mast, but I had not finished adding the mast hoops to go above and below the wooldings. These I made out of 0.7mm styrene rod, curled around a dowel and then heated to retain some of the curve. These just needed a sand to getting to a uniform depth after gluing, once done painting in brown and the addition of woolding rope to finish. The lower mast needs some blocks adding and the handrail on the platform. While doing that I have made a start on the fore topmast and fore topgallant mast. The last couple of pictures show the current state of affairs. Think I will keep moving from making sawdust and hopefully more mast sections and adding blocks to the finished parts to keep up momentum!
Thanks for looking in. 👋

chris watton reacted to palmerit in Erycina 1882 by Blue Ensign - Vanguard Models - 1:64 scale - Plymouth Trawler
I have this in my stash too. After the Ranger I'm working on now, I'm doing the Zulu 'Lady Isabella'. Then the Erycina. I got all three of the larger Vanguard fishing vessels during an agesofsail sale last year. The first two are "Novice" boats, the Erycina is "Amateur" - maybe because the Erycina has two masts? It'll be interesting to see if there's anything else on this one that is more challenging than the others.

chris watton reacted to Blue Ensign in Erycina 1882 by Blue Ensign - Vanguard Models - 1:64 scale - Plymouth Trawler
Erycina - Ketch rigged Plymouth Trawler 1882.
I’ve had this kit for a while, and with nothing specific in the immediate offing it will give me hopefully a no stress easy build of this pretty little fishing vessel to complement my Fifie and Zulu builds.
I was attracted to this boat by its sleek lines and interesting sail plan. Given the open deck and Fore and aft rigging it will be fairly easy to clean, and casing will not be required. It is also a model that will fit in a fairly small space.
My interest is also piqued given additional detailing for Erycina is provided in the book Sailing Trawlers by Edgar J. March
I can see an opportunity to indulge myself with a little off-piste detailing work.
On with the show.
