    Hello all,

For the newcomers, a warm welcome to my buildlog.
Thank you for stopping by and the compliments.  It is appreciated.

    @ Popeye,
Yes Denis, I know you use the archive pen as well. I have that idea from you and it works great.  Thanks for the tip.

    @ Ulises
If you can get the Lego blocks, they will be a great help for little money.

It is again high time for an update.  She is by far not seaworthy, but this is how she is right now.

    Work done:
    - Deck caulking (a bundle of 10 planks at a time)
    - Reinforcing pieces glued onto the last frame
    - Gun carriages painted (red Ochre from Admiralty paints)) and put a layer of surface primer on the canons (Negro black from Vallejo)
    - Interior quarter deck bulwarks, forecastle bulwarks and interior hold bulwarks painted (red Ochre from Admiralty paints)
    - Cut out parts the crossbeams that remain exposed over the holds

    To be continued .....

Thank you all for watching and enjoy.

    Hi everyone!

I'm new to this forum and actually, this is my forum I have ever joined! (Welcome to the 21st century right?) Haha!

I've built a few ships on my own, but never had any help nor knew anyone who had experience with ship building so I have been winging it!

After looking through this site, I found a TON of helpful advice and building guides that I'm excited to try out on my next build!  After reading some of the guides to planking a hull, I looked back on my models and noticed that I did not give enough attention to it and I could have done a LOT better.

I haven't been able to finish my current ship, the Albatros from Constructo, since my son was born.  Now that he's a little past 2 years old, I finally have some time to finish the sails and rigging.  Once this is finished, I will be starting the HMS Victory by Constructo and I WILL be using the guides and tips from this site to help with the build. Lastly, I would like to post a build log because I know I will need help and I will have questions!

I look forward to my next build and using the excellent advice from this site!

    Thanks!

If you please,  let us know a name by which we can address you, if not Zarkon,  the ruthless and overbearing ruler of the Galra Empire

    Martin, Warm welcome to MSW.
Many of us has been involved with MSW for a long time and experienced coming and going of members.
The big crash back in 2013 where all was lost, at least what we thought. Some was recovered thanks to members that had build logs saved on their own computers.
Now it's time for you to start a build log. As we all look forward to see your build.

Update as of May 19 2017.

Milestone reached! ALL 126 cannons are placed and those which needed it, rigged.
This took me a very long time because some of the triangular cannonball racks went flying from my tweezers and landed in that parallel universe we all know, but never been in.
So I decided I would not go any further until I somehow make some of them.
Here you see some failed attempts and at the bottom 4 pieces satisfactorily made. The far right one is the original. I attempted several methods and finally what worked was using that pink thingie you see in the photo. That is dentist's wax. I managed to make the molds in them and  used 30 min epoxy to fill them. I had to put the pieces in boiling water to get rid of the wax, but finally I managed to make 4 acceptable pieces.

So with that out of the way, I finished placing all cannons on all decks. There are 126 cannons: 70 dummies in the 2 lower rows, of which I placed only 60. I left 5 randomly empty gunports on each side. I plan to put closed gunports on there to break monotony.
Then there are 56 csmaller cannons that went on carriages. Of those, 28 had to be fully rigged, 6 half rigged and 22 with no rigging at all, being these totally hidden under the decks.
There you go... Here the photos and a general view of my ship as of today.

I am going to start working on the gunports. 70 of them if I remember correctly.

    Thanks for visiting, mates!!!

Anja reacted to rafine in Halifax by rafine - FINISHED - The Lumberyard - 1:48 - semi-scratch schooner
With completion of the framing, it was time to make some decisions. First, I decided that I would leave the hull below the wales unplanked, except for a single strake of holly directly below the wale. Second, the hull above the wales would be fully planked on both sides. Third, I would leave fairing of the interior hull until I have completed the hull planking and have cut the hull from the framing jig.

Having made these decisions, it was time to begin the planking process. The first item was the wales. Since they were to be painted black, I chose to use holly which is easier to bend than boxwood, and made them in two layers, again for ease of bending and fitting. When they were in place, I painted them using multiple coats of ModelMaster engine black (the former Pollyscale).

Next, I planked the stern counter and the lower portion of the transom. This was done with boxwood and was treenailed using the drill and fill method (which I intend to use for all of the treenailing). I trimmed back the wales to meet the counter planking. I still need to add moldings, finish the counter planking with Wipe-on poly and paint the wale ends black. This will be done later, as will the remaining stern transom work.

Hey howya goin all, I've glued the bottom and the top beams altogether, I put sticky tape on my bench so the glue doesn't stick to my cutting mat and used the grid on my cutting mat to keep everything square. Now to leave it to sit for 24 hours

@Donn and @Piet: thank you both for your kind words. Sure we can learn from each other. When I was building the HMS Agamemnon, I frequently looked at the buildings of other people and it kept me many times from making mistakes. And the same now with my SotS.
Allready made a mistake at the beginning as the picture show. Glad I could fix it. Also I noticed a difference between a model of Caldercraft and this ship from Mantua. Specially the way it all fits. The instructions are not as clear as I used to with my Aggy. So I will frequently as you all for help
Still it will become the most beautifull ship I ever build....
