    Welcome aboard Dollburger,

Can you please tell us your real name?

I leave the advise to our more experienced modellers.  But one of our members, Adam (SkerryAmp)  has created the Model Ship World Ship Kit Database You can search the database on skill level, manufacturer, scale, kit type etc. It is certainly worth having a look.

For tools, you might have a look here, in the articles database.

I wish you smooth sailing and happy modelling.

    Regards,

    Hey everyone,

I've been browsing through some builds on here and wow - you guys (and girls) are good!

I'm new to model ship building, but have always been fascinated by the models. I have built plastic models in the past, mostly cars, and for many years I've built and painted miniatures for war games like Warhammer 40k where I've done some basic customization.

I'd like to try my hands at ship building but I'm not sure where to start. I originally looked at the Rattlesnake, but after looking at some builds on here I'm wondering if that's too complex for starters? On the other hand, solid hulled models sound like they're aren't going to give me the challenge I'm looking for unless I'm not understanding what all goes into the construction.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I really like the Napoleonic War era, and I'd really like to stay on the warship side if possible, but I couldn't track down something simpler than the Rattlesnake.  I'm also curious what type of tools are considered a must for me. I have simple things like pin vices/small bits/Dremel, etc. but not much for wood working since I've always worked with resin. I definitely don't have any hull shaping tools that I've seen sold on websites.

Thanks for any advice you may have!

    Looking good Bob, nice progress.

Enjoy your week away from the shipyard.  We will manage without your updates, I think.

All of the full frames have now been made up and mounted. The next step was to permanently mount the the keel-stem-stern assembly to the the full frames. Before doing this, I did some work on the stem that could more easily be done before mounting. This involved drilling, cutting and filing the gammoning slot, and cutting and tapering the upper forward portion to accommodate the fitting of the figurehead. The figurehead is a 3D printed resin piece supplied by the Lumberyard. I am attaching a photo showing it in place temporarily. It will be painted to match the wood before permanent mounting at a much later time.

I will be away from the shipyard for about a week, and will then begin on the stern half frames.

    Bob

Starboard ports now pierced also. I'm following the research that makes note that the entry port was only on the port side so have left it off the starboard. This is quite clear as per notes from one of her later refits an entry port starboard was pierced in the hull as was then becoming present in most first and second rate English vessels after 1670. So we can assume at the time of Van der Velde's sketch only the port side had an entry port. This is also clear in Van der Velde the younger sketches of Sovereign after her 1660 rebuild showing both sides that there is only an entry port on the port side and none starboard but steps leading up the hull. Phew that was a lot! Haha

Thanks mate  I'm quite happy with the way the strakes sit on the hull. I'll do the starboard ones tonight. This arvo though decided to make up a working stand for her now the first planking is complete. There isn't one in the kit so just used a bit of mdf and pine I had in the shed. A lot more stable compared to the clamp I was using as she's getting more weight on her. Also better than propping her up all the time.

Thank you all for for your very kind words. Feels a bit sad... She kept me busy for over 6 years (with some breaks), but the last 2 years it was a daily job. But........I already ordered my dreamship which I always wanted to build one time: The Sovereign of the Seas (from Mantua/Sergal). When all goes well, this kit will arrive this month and than you are all welcome on my new building log.

A small update. I'm making and mounting the full frames at the rate of about one per day, following the procedures previously set out. At this point, twelve full frames have been set, and ten more remain. After that, I will move to the half frames at bow and stern.

My health has declined in the last 6 months Haven't been able to do much at all. Have started to rig the breech lines  on the carronades. This kind of work is much more difficult for me now than it was just last year. I see that things will be going much slower for me so there will be longer periods of time between updates but I'll be doing what I can when I can.

Not much to show but it's a start.  One of our pets keeping close by for some comfort.
