Thanks for the welcome!  Over the last week been reading (several times) the Winchelsea article on planking and watching the 2 videos of Chuck Passaro demonstrating planking.  Will be following some build logs here plus additional reading over the next few months before starting the build next fall.

    Until then take care.

Welcome Blaine!  Though I haven't built her - I've seen the Syren become many folks' favorite pretty quickly.  Good luck with her!

Cannon assembly line update. (With special mention to Sjors and Anja  )

First, a bunch of eyebolts in two different sizes had to be made.

I am starting with these 12 cannons that go on the upper deck. Here, holes for eyebolts have been drilled

Here eyebolts are glued and attached and coat of BLO applied

Cannons in place. This is one of the rare occasions in which I use cyanoacrilate (Super glue)

    Here hinges have been placed

A piece of rope tied to the cannon bell

    Process of tying the eyebolt

    Two cannons rigged

These 12 cannons are now ready to be mounted.

    To be continued...

I don't know how to remove a photo. This next one wasn't intended to be here
Ahhh- The delete button is well hidden!

Hi everyone! WOW a brand new site. I hope everyone is doing well. I have some updates for my Niagara but life has been too busy to post. The Admiral is recovering from knee replacement surgery and I'm currently in Ohio helping my parents with their health issues, add to that my own health problems along with planning a move and somehow trying to get a little ship building accomplished. I hope to get back home (Florida) next week but time will tell. I apologize for my lack of communication but I could not even find time to follow the amazing builds on here. I did start a word file on my update that I can hopefully finish and then simply cut and paste but we'll see how soon I can do that once I'm home (fourth trip to Ohio in less than a year and another one planned in April). Now all I need to do is figure out how to post updates with pictures....lol

I believe you'll find the same method on the Wasa, Pete.   The lateen was hung like that so it could be swung around the mast to the other side when the ship was maneuvering.

Regained an interest in model boat building again so thought I would say hello. I have built many kits in the past and have a stash that I may start on soon. Very keen to model 17th century ships but possibly 5th rates or the new "Frigate" construction. If anybody knows a good set of plans from NMM of this period it would be appreciated but from my search most drafts are from around 1720 onwards.
Shame that drafts were not the norm then rather than 1/4 scale replicas.
I have done quite a bit of 3D modelling work for Flight Sim and the last commercial release was Aerosoft's F14 Tomcat and the Kitty Hawk which I modelled. Finalising the Eagle for release soon.
Hope to learn and contribute if qualified.

I will try to clarify what I mean:

Bigger is easier in the way that it is easier to handle a part  with your hand instead of only 2 fingers.
Easier in the way that you have more control of your movement.
The more control you will have, the greater the possibilities to produce  a more accurate part.
You can create smaller parts with great accuracy but you will need a greater concentration.

At smaller scale you have to omit parts because many parts would be too small to handle properly.

To understand more easily how a part is made it is easier to do it at a bigger scale and also you will understand better because you will see the components more easily.

Probably I will understand better the intricacy of the construction if I do it at a bigger scale  which will allow to see more parts.

The smaller the scale, the less details  is likely to be seen on a model ship.
    Here is an example:

How the frames sit on the keel. Boudriot give an extensive description but  How the heels fit under the frame is not so clear. It is difficult to see exactly how it is done.
So I tried to manufacture 1 set of frames.
You can see the result of this try.

    The next build.

Before to begin the construction  with wood, I want to have all the necessary information I need for the complete build.

-I do not want to have to do extensive research
-I do not want to draw plans
-I do not want to begin in 5 years

My prefered activity is to build and I want to concentrate on this particular aspect.

    V4.0       for the forth time
    74           I will build a 74 guns
1/24      I will use the biggest scale I can manage. For this one 1/24 is 8 feet long. This is
about the maximum I can easily manipulate. I would have love to build even at
a bigger scale like 1/12 but I do not have all the plans I need.

Jean Boudriot offers me everything I need. All the required information  is available in 5 books, not 4 but yes 5. I am a lazy person for this time, I will not draw the frames; JC Lemineur did and I will use it.

So, I have all what I need to begin :
-all the paper I need (the fifth book is in the mail)
-all the tools I bought tools for the last 30 years
-all the wood I need, at least for the frames.

I did build  1 version of the 74 with exotic woods. If I add the price of all the exotic woods used, you would not believe how much expensive it can be in these quantities.

Traditionnally, in Europe, they use pear wood  for the frames and boxwood for the carvings.
In my country, here in Quebec, there are no places to buy these woods and anyway it is too expensive for what I want to do.

Here in Quebec, one of the most stable wood we have is cherry wood. In addition the properties
are similar to pear wood except for the grain; cherry has pear has not. For sanding both are identical. As a bonus, at least for my taste, I love the smell of this wood when cutting or sanding.

Welcome to MSW John! I too am a model railroader in addition to building model ships and many other things... It is great to have you with us and I know you will find this a great place to help you learn all those new skills and building practices that come with model ships. The Phantom makes a nice kit to learn with and there are some good build logs on here that I would recommend looking at to give you a preview and perhaps a better understanding of some of the work that will be needed.
Best of luck to you on your first build and I look forward to seeing your work!
