Sjors got a reaction from reklein in Santísima Trinidad by Sjors - OcCre - 1:90
Thanks Denis and Ulises.
Also that for the likes.
@ Ulises,
When the popcorn bag is empty ....just re-fill it
I have plank the decks.
The lower gun deck has also a layer of tung oil.
And I see the other ones also .....Morning Sjors.
I also post a few pictures with the beginning of the planking and the end result.
The bow section looks if it needed some modifications but don't forget...there is a lot that comes at the wall.
So maybe a little sanding paper?

Time for a update.
As I told you before, I receive my false keel.
I place all the frames on it and I'm happy
Also the first deck is ready .
The picture you see the deck without any varnish.
Tomorrow I will place a picture with tung oil on it.
I will do that tonight so it can dry.
The second picture will show you "little" clamps
Just for sure that everything stick together......

Sjors got a reaction from popeye the sailor in Smit Rotterdam by FrozenRabbit471 - Billing Boats - 1:75
Hello Terry,
Anja was saying to me that there was a build log of the Smit Rotterdam.
Found it !
In my early days of building , I have build it myself.
And because we are living close to Rotterdam and I have seen that tug boat many times in real life, I will take a seat and will watch the birth of this beauty !
Do your best and if there are any questions......just ask !
And now I'm here , it is tradition that I place a popcorn machine.
So I see a free corner.
If you don't like it, please tell me and I will remove it.

Your back must still be bothering you then Carl.
And so it begins, my first ratlines are on. 2.5 hours to get tp this point! Need some adjustment still, they are not secured yet, I want to get some practice first. The macro shots really show the variations I have.
Not sure if I am going to try to fix the middle lanyard or not it means replacing the entire lanyard and the difference in the length of the seizing (frapping?) isnt as noticeable from a regular viewing distance.
Onward!!

Thanks everybody much appreciated.
Sjors, they will be well fed, well treated and much appreciated.
Dennis, Didnt know crossed was an option, I think for this build I am going to give it a pass. Every time something like this happens I am reminded of how much Ship Modeling is like playing Chess!!
RIch, you can never have enough clamps of any type.

Sjors reacted to HIPEXEC in US Brig Syren by Hipexec - FINISHED - Model Shipways - 1:64 - building as USS Argus
Working on the stern. The plans and instructions are vague on this part with one fuzzy picture showing planks before painting.

Down to two pieces on this side. I'll probably finish the sides today if I'm not distracted by life.

The last side plank is installed. It was no bigger than a long toothpick. Now I'll tackle the stern

Sjors reacted to popeye the sailor in Thermopylae by popeye the sailor - Sergal - 1:124 scale
I've made a little progress....thought I'd share it with you all. I'm working on that poop deck railing at the moment....again. since the first try was a bust, I figured I'd try something else. I have the fife rails roughed out for the fore and main masts. I can't use the kit supplied ones, 'cuz the holes are already drilled for those wooden ones......the belaying pins I got would fall right through them.
so, here's what I have so far...
now, I mentioned the anchors.......I put the darn things together. definitely.......got to get some that are more to scale. I couldn't believe it! putting them together was easy.....that is, until I got to the eye rings. the holes for them were not drilled out......none of my bits would touch 'em. I remembered that I had some old dental bits that a friend had sent me. burned the first one out doing the first anchor...but it did drill the hole. I found out that the anchors are made of white metal......hard stuff, I can tell ya that it took two of those bits to do them both! the rings are on, but I didn't bother to do the puddin. check out the size.
this will give you a better sense of their size.......
another thing I noticed were the eye bolts. here is the size supplied in the kit.......
I have two sizes of eye bolts........three if you count the ones I get from Hobby Lobby {I wouldn't use them anyway......they're too big too}. here's what I'm going to use instead.
as I mentioned earlier....I need to get chain......there was none supplied in the kit. the capstan and binnacle are now in place on the deck......still more deck stuff to go
hope to have more soon........thanks for look'in in.

Sjors reacted to popeye the sailor in Thermopylae by popeye the sailor - Sergal - 1:124 scale
thanks for the kind comments........jeeze........an' I don't even drink red bull I have my days, like every one else......but when I can sit and play...I take full advantage the admiral surprised me yesterday.......we were talking about kits. I had said something about the larger kit and how expensive they were.........her reply was if I had the second {part time} job, we coulda started a 'ship fund'. the surprising part came when she said she hoped that I could make other hulls {ships} from this kit. in the back of my mind, I have ideas to clone a few other ships from this kit.....the parts panels are of really good shape, so it should hold up rather well. I think she likes the size......and how the model is coming out. it's not museum quality, but it is looking fairly nice, and I am getting into building at this scale. I got to try the belaying pins last night.........I think they are perfect.
the one in the front is slight longer {jest a tiny bit}......that's for the main mast. I'm keeping the receipts for all the parts I'm ordering for this project. should I start another, I'll jest order more parts. now these two rails shocked me a little......it's taken almost 1 package of pins to do them. I want to make sure that there are enough pins to go around........I don't want to be drill'in holes when the rigging stage is in full swing. some of the fittings in this kit is good, but there are other parts that need to be scaled down. with the finished models I've seen......I still wonder how these folks did it.......some of the processes with this kit are very clumsy to work with. the kit is not impossible......for those who have this kit, go into it with a scratch builder's mind, and you'l do just fine. I'm also working on another idea for the poop railing......I'm continuing with the railing concept i've been using, but I'll give it a small twist. I'm not finished with it yet.
we'll see how it looks when I get it done. I'll try to put together a list of parts....numbers.....and places I got them from. it should help future projects.
hello Vivian........glad to see your look'in in. I hope you enjoy the log

Hello, Thanks again for your likes and kind comments, keep them coming, as I'm sure that you know they really do motivate.
Vince and any others who may be interested here's my method of transferring the plan to wood, it's more simple than you may imagine.
You need to copy the plan and print it using a Laser printer, it won't work with an inkjet! You need to get something with Xylene in it. Looking through my shed I found that I had some thinners that was for Hammerite metal paint so I use that, I believe it is also in ink eraser pens, and other products, just check the label. Place the printed side to the wood, I tape mine down so that it doesn't move, dampen the back with xylene then with a hard edge, I use an old plastic card scrape it over the print, this transfers the laser ink onto the wood every bit as sharp and clear as the original, works like magic every time.
Here's how I copied for my deck beams.

Hello Everyone. Here's my progress update.
Some steps forward and quite a few back but I'm getting there.
I fitted the quarter deck, planked and tree nailed it. I made up the deck beam as I had earlier and fitted that. I fitted all the dummy gun carriages and continued up with the first hull planking. I made and fitted the quarter deck gratings. I have been finding difficulties filing out all the windows so for the panels screens on the quarter deck I just painted them, they can hardly be seen so I'll accept the compromise there. After I had planked high enough I roughly shaped the profile for the top edge but having done it I found that I had taken away too much so, annoyed with myself I had to re-do a fair bit of the upper planking. I fitted the upper quarter deck, planked and nailed it. I decided to mark the gun port positions next.
Up until about fifteen years ago I built and flew model aircraft and from that I learned how to transfer the image from plans onto the surface of wood so I tried that method and it worked well, see what you think. I am now ready to cut out those ports.

Sjors reacted to Tallshiptragic in Sovereign of the Seas by Tallshiptragic - Sergal - 1/78
Before getting too distracted with the stern I want to finish the sides first so have redirected my attention to the beakhead. I'm at a stage now where I will turn her around and continue with those decorations until the sides are even before progressing further.

Victory in her place on the stern facia.

Sjors reacted to Tallshiptragic in Sovereign of the Seas by Tallshiptragic - Sergal - 1/78
For painting I use Vallejo acrylic metal gold paint. This is a nice warm gold tone with a slight green hue which gives the appearance of patina on the gold leaf which I prefer over a bright gold. I will give them all a light wash with diluted black once all the decorations are on again to emphasise weathering.

Thought I'd show a bit more detail of how I make the replacement decorations. A lot of the sergal pieces are either close enough or correct according to the descriptions from Sephtons book which match the Van de Velde sketch. The stern however as we know is the most incorrect basically all needs to be replaced. So I thought to best piece to show was the effigy of a winged Victory with her outstretched arms holding ribbons of gold. I am more comfortable in this small scale with sculpting so this is my preferred medium.
To start I draw a template of the stern with the carvings in place to suit my model and using miliput a add thin pieces until they build up the body of the piece. My apologies for lack of steps in my photos as this is a messy business so I waited till the piece was complete.
Once the miliput has dried it peels away from the paper back and can be glued to the model

Sjors reacted to EJ_L in Le Soleil Royal by EJ_L - FINISHED - Sergal - Scale 1:77 - 1669 Version
Thank you all very much for the nice words and to all the "Likes". I love modeling details like this as these are what create those surprise wow moments when people peak in the windows and discover there is stuff to be seen. It was always one of the fun things I like to do on my model railroad for the same reason. It just adds more awe and wonder when you can not only see a great exterior but also a detailed interior.
My plan for sanding the hull and protecting the interior is simply tape at the moment. When I go to do the heavy sanding, I will close off the openings to the cabins as best I can with blue painter's tape. That should keep the majority of the dust out. However, I do know that it won't hold it all off and so once done I will take my airbrush and just use a light pressure to blow out the remaining dust. I always blow off a model when I'm done sanding anyway so this isn't anything unusual I will just have to be careful to not knock anything loose. In the event something comes loose which is likely with those chairs, I will still have access through the stern windows. The framing I am doing prior to the sanding is just the rough outline framing to allow the planking to install where needed. The windows and doors will not be fully framed and so I will have plenty of room to get in with tweezers to reset anything that comes loose.
That brings me to recent work. As you can see some of that framing has already started. I also had to run the framing on the taffrail to allow for the lantern light wiring to install as well as the start of the framing for the quarter and poop decks. With the wiring in place I can tie them all together to clean up that mess of red and black guts spilling out of the hull and close up the starboard side as well as topping out the planking on both sides. I ran out of the wood I was using to frame the gun ports so a run to the Hobby Store is in order soon so that can be completed. I will have to get the Admiral's permission to take out the Good Ship Visa though as she knows a trip to the hobby store for $10 worth of wood means I will return $100 poorer financially but richer in wood, tools, supplies or just something cool I could not live without!
Enjoy the picture updates and thanks for stopping by!
