Jim Lad got a reaction from mtaylor in Meteor 1851 by Jim Lad - Scale 1:96 - Immigrant Ship
This log has lain dormant for some considerable time, so I thought I'd better tell people what's happening.
The poor old 'Meteor' hasn't been forgotten or abandoned but sits patiently on my desk at home while all my efforts are directed to trying to get the 'Duchess' completed.
Progress will resume once the 'Duchess' has been handed over to the museum staff.

The manufacture of beams continues. All the beam 'blanks' have now been completed and I've started to work on the deck opening framing for them. Everything still, of nececcity, still unfixed, so everything needs to be carefully marked as it all goes together like a mad jigsaw puzzle.
below are a couple of images of the forest of frames all roughly in place.

Jim Lad got a reaction from Tony Hunt in Meteor 1851 by Jim Lad - Scale 1:96 - Immigrant Ship
I've been very slack with posting progress on the 'Meteor' of late. On the other hand, there's actually been very little progress as it's Christmas school holidays here in Oz and the museum has been seething with families keeping the kids amused. I've done an awful lot of talking and showing people the models, but very little work on my model!
However, the capping rail is now complete, and I've been working on the very simple stern decoration (this is a merchant ship, not a prestigious ship of war), so something is happening, at least.
Here are a couple of phots of the model as she is now.

Håkan, I am an absolute master of 'just put it down where you last used it you know where it is, spend half an hour looking for it again'. I think I would have time to build many more models if I could only master that important workshop skill! 😀

Greg, I've been silently admiring your work for some time and thought I should apologise for not posting to comment on your beautiful models. I'll try and do better in future.

Jim Lad got a reaction from Javelin in Meteor 1851 by Jim Lad - Scale 1:96 - Immigrant Ship
I've been fiddling with making 'raw' deck beams for the past couple of visits to the museum. The model will need to come home shortly to have some finish applied to the inside of the hull, but in the meantime, I can make the beams ready to start chopping some of them up where deck structures will intrude so that things can progress after the model comes home.
This is how she looks at the moment with the beams so far made temporarily fitted in place.

Another small update. Here's the 'Meteor' with the first deck beam temporarily in place - no, I'm not planning to deck the upper decks before the lower decks, but a beam placed there helps to stop the hull from being forced inwards at the shoulders by the severely curved bow planking!

Jim Lad got a reaction from gak1965 in Herzogin Cecilie 1902 by Jim Lad - Four Masted Barque
Things have been moving ahead a little faster than I expected as most of the corrections on deck have now been made, so I've been able to concentrate more on the standing rigging. I'm now back to the main mast and currently working on the royal rigging, so almost finished there. You can also see additional coils hanging over the side indicating that the lower halliard fittings are in and ready for the yards.
The fore spreaders are also now fitted. I always fit the spreaders after the rigging is done, as the very slightest alteration in angle of any of the upper backstays throws the spreader alignment off, so better to fit the spreader to the actual rigging than the other way around.
You will also see a clothes peg hanging on the main topmast stay near the deck. This is as a result of a self-inflicted disaster when I tried to trim a loose end down near the foremast base and slipped, slicing neatly through one leg of the stay! 🥵🥵🥵 I think it will be OK but will see tomorrow when I try to complete the repair.

Jim Lad got a reaction from cotrecerf in Herzogin Cecilie 1902 by Jim Lad - Four Masted Barque
I thought it was about time I updated my log for the 'Duchess'. Still working away on deck details and standing rigging. It seems to be taking an age to get anywhere with her, but there is a lot to do on a model of a ship this big, plus I spend a lot of time talking to visitors (which is the whole point of the model being built in the museum galleries. Visitor interest has now reached the stage where one of the front desk staff came and asked me what my schedule is as visitors keep asking when the model will be worked on!
The photos below show some of the progress. The capping rail around the poop is now complete; I've replaced some of the gratings (which were wire mesh) with more appropriate looking ones; the donkey boiler house with feed tanks and supply pipes are now fitted and the foremast rigging has progressed to having the fore topmast rigging completed.
My plan is to continue rigging the foremast so that I can start experimenting with sail making - starting with the jibs, which should be a bit simpler than the square sails.
