Hooray! I finished all the messy part of gluing metal parts onto wood parts. Damn CA! Hate it!

Metal bumper looks much better then a paper one. Or I probably just cant work with the paper (some build logs of ships from card totally changed the view on paper)

And here is the rudder installed. Fully functional, you can rotate it gently

Trunk of the pinnace looked too empty. Then I started to think... What could be there? It is a flashy pinnace, not the one that is used to carry food supply. It is intended to transport officers. What they could carry with them?? Aha! Some high quality booze, to make sure it will not disappear while officers are on the shore.

Remco, would you mind if I bother you with a next batch of questions regarding finish? it is one of the best I ever saw, so I am trying to learn on best examples!
What is the benefit of microcrystalline wax comparing to tung oil, why do you prefer it now? And all that comparing to wipe-on-poly?
Do you apply finish to a tiny pieces, like the beds, closets, etc?
What finish have you used for frames?
And the last one - what is your tactics for when to finish? Do you apply it before gluing, or after?

    Thanks for all advices!

Young America - extreme clipper 1853
Part 62 – Lower deck framing continued

Thank you all for the comments and the likes on the last posts.  Work continues.

Once the deck beams are fitted, the deck framing is all about knees.  Below is a set of lodging knees that have been fitted between two beams.

Monofilament dummy bolts have been CA glued in and sliced off flush.  The knees now will be sanded to remove all trace of the CA and to round off the bottom edge.  Note in this picture the two dashed lines on the drawing running parallel to the side.  The upper line is the inside edge of the waterway.  This will cover the butting of the knees as well as the ends of the ledges.

In the next picture one of the generic-shaped lodging cut earlier knees is being fit.

For the lodging knees this is mainly a matter of beveling the edge to fit the frames and to adjust the fore and aft width.  The next picture shows the fit from above.

In the next picture the forward pair of lodging knees and the hanging knees under the next beam have been installed.

Fitting of the hanging knees involves quite a bit of trimming of the original cut-out shapes due to the change in hull curvature.  I suspect a bit more lofting work would have been helpful.

I am following up the beam installation progressively with the carlings and ledges.  In the next picture a ledge is being marked for cutting – held by a surgical clamp.

The ledges are not rounded, so they need to be faired off to match the beams.  A small sanding block is being used in the next picture to fair off the top of all the framing.

The last picture shows the framing completed thus far.

The waterways will put a neat cap at the side on the intersection of all these deck members with the frames at the side.

I should mention that before drilling it is important to square the press bed to the drill bit to ensure straight holes are made

Sanded the edge to finished shape using a belt sander   And that is as far as I got this weekend I will try laying out the legs and frames this week to cut this coming weekend. With luck I might start some assembly.

Nope....no good.....your piece is not oriented properly with the grain.  That is why they break...rotate so the part of the stem that sticks up and always breaks is going along with the grain....rather than across it.  This is super important and you should always keep teh grain direction in mind when posiitioning your templates.

Mark - thanks a lot for that link.  After looking at them I see my errors (and they are definitely ALL mine).  Main thing was rushing - bad habit I've got.  What was really brain-dead (on my part) I had one of them bookmarked so I could use it when I got to that point and failed to go back and look at it.

Yeah, the bulkhead is in the right spot.  I'm not sure how I got it too small.  I'm positive it was not a kit error either.

I had forgotten about acetone loosening the CA, but after looking things over again today, I realized that when I supposedly faired the bulkheads, I totally blew it when I beveled them up in a curve following the bearding line instead of toward the stern as required.

So that being the case, I ordered the new kit today and will just remake the hull.  As a plus, that'll give me a lot of spare parts for future boo-boo's.

Got to learn to put some kind of "governor" on my hurry up attitude.  Well, lesson learned (I hope).

    Thanks for your help.

You wipe off all excess water when you pull the soaked plank from the water. So it would be just damp, but not dripping wet.
I had no problems with getting moisture into the bulkheads.

However, you will need lots of small clamps. There was a nice topic somewhere, about making a simple clamps from a paper clips. Looks like this, and very handy:

But always put a small pieces of scrap wood or card between clamp and plank, basswood is so soft that it would be smashed otherwise.

P.S.: don't overthink it, just get started! There are spare planks in the kit, you have a room for a mistake, especially if you use a glue that could be dissolved with water or alcohol. Planks are attached incorrectly? Not a big deal, tear them away, glue again. I used PVA-style glue, just add a water, glue joint is getting weak, you remove the plank and reuse it again.

Maury, I had to make the door a bit longer, but now you're mentioning it, I probably better put the extension above the door. It does look a bit strange now. I fear taking the door out will damage the pantry, let me think about that.

Fleas Druxey? I thought I was a step ahead of you by adding the palliasses and now your starting about fleas. Boy where does this end.....

Work moved to the outside of the hull. The knee of the head (made 1,5 years back) is now permanently fitted as I had to add the iron plates to the bottom of the hull.

I glued them temporarily in place to draw the outlines and then used a chisel to remove the wood so it fits flush to the hull. I'll remove them to prevent any damage to the plates.

This concludes TFFM Vol 1, a bit of a milestone, this took me 4,5 years to complete and still two volumes to go......... I hope everybody is patient enough to bear with me till the end (and throwing challenges at me will make the journey longer..)

K, hit a major non-repairable snag.  Got the first two planks on (each side).

Somehow, (not sure how since I used a block) the second bulkhead from the stem is too small, causing a major "sinking" of the planks.

Gotta re-order the kit since I was using CA and can not get it apart.

But as Arnold says,  "I'll be back".

PS Next time gonna use plain old wood glue.

BTW anybody know of a video tute on fairing the bulkheads (maybe I can see what I did wrong?)

Well done Mike - I suspected as much, but acetone usually dissolves the coating that's sometimes applied to brass. You may need to try a few different types of thinners until you find the one that works, perhaps a Polyurethane thinner may do the trick. They may need an overnight soak in the stuff.

I followed the advice working with a coarser sandpaper to begin with and followed up with 400 grit.
The sheets came out very nice. The discoloration is natural in the wood. Nothing I can do about.
The upper sheet hasn't had the removal of dust attended yet.

The keel and stem piece will be from HobbyMills longboat boxwood upgrade.
I scanned part of the plans and cut out the keel template, attached it to the boxwood sheet and saw it.
The connection notch on the keel was cut out using my very new fine-tooth saw.

And the final outcome, this without sanding at all.
