Installed gardboard planks. That was quite easy, but more time-consuming then regular planks.

    Result on a "good" side:

Gap for remaining planks is quite consistent, looks ok.

And here is the other, "bad" side. Planks are overtapered on this side.

The gap is widening closer to the front part of the hull.
Will try to slowly fill it by a weirdly shaped remaining planks, let's see if it is fixable, or I will need to tear down the whole side of the ship and re-plank.

    Frustration!!!....

As i said a couple of posts above i have begun finising the deck of the boat. Using 1,8x12x610 mm Obechi planks from Billing Boats. Because of several factors including my own fault i came to the conclusion i had to get a set more of these planks. No problem i thought, i  had seen them being sold here in Stockholm in the number one model shop here.
So today i brought the children and headed for the shop. To my surprise they were sold out... Well, what the F*** i thought, but they can probably easily order some more. The guy i was talking to looked at Billing Boats spare parts in the computer and said "well, this is strange this part is not listed here, only 1,8x10x???, so i can not order it but i will try to call them and ask them" . Haaaaaaahahahahahaaaaa why does this always happen me!

Sorry for interrupting, just to finish the discussions about various kit versions.
Just got my BB720 kit, with wooden shields. That's what inside:

    Wooden shields, really nice one:

Plywood bulkheads, plywood looks really low quality, but not warped. Let's see how it will behave:

Bow decorations, they are laser burnt, really good quality, no burn marks. You can paint it any way you want.

You have the best Vasa build I ever saw! Jattebra!
Well, maybe except a crazy guy who scratchbuilt Vasa using same technology as for original ship

Now I dry fit soaked planks using a paper clips, they dry overnight, and next evening I glue them. One pair of planks per day, but turned out to be easier then bending and drying!

Dont forget to put some scrapmpieces between the clip and the plank, otherwise it will leave an ugly traces. Soaked basswood is much softer then I thought

In a meanwhile, added a third planking level and made a base for a slipway-style model stand. It would be painted black and I will add some diagonal supports for the boat when the planking would be completed.
Still not sure how that stand will look in reality, so maybe there would be a second iteration.

Finished planking of one side. It was a lot of experience, which is clearly visible on a hull. First planks has bigger gaps and less accurate fit.
Finished hull looks quite nice, there are some small gaps and imperfections, and I really hope I can smoothen them by sanding. Lets see when the entire hull would be completed
Lesson learnt, it is really extremely imporant to properly shape the bulkheads, next time I will do some temporarily planking to make sure that bulkheads are forming a smooth line. There are some "pits" on a hull that are simply incorrectly shaped bulkhead. Well, thats what experience is!

Now switching to MS longboat (pinnace) as a side project, need to have a rest from bending & sanding of the majogany planks...

Don't mind a bit dirty hull, I will remove the glue traces and sand the hull later, when it would be completed.

Also, thanks BobF for a nice way of making a plank bending templates - attach the sticky tape to the previous plank, paint the pencil line like you are simulating the caulking, bend the plank according to that template:

First of all, thanks to Chuck for designing that amazing kit.
It's really a pleasure to build, everything is so well thought through! Especially after AL kit, not so well designed and with idiotic instructions
If you care not only about the result, but a relaxing process - then buy that kit, you would not regret.

The kit content quite standard - manual, laser cut details, various basswood strips for planking:

End result should look as close to this teaser as possible:

What's in between? Let's look in the manual:

No, really not, the manual is the best I ever saw, you can take a look here: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/6432389/Pinnace/MS1458-Pinnace-Instructions.pdf

I do not plan to make any interesting adjustments to the build, but will try to build it as accurate as I can.
So maybe it would be interesting to beginners, nothing more.
Would appreciate any kind of feedback and advices from a more experienced builders!

A few more planks in place, now the tapering has started. No idea why, but the bottom part of the keel is not planked (not with first layer at least), instead two solid pieces of wood are attached that will later have to be shaped.

First of all, such nice boat requires a solid, but light dock. I don't have a dedicated space for modelling, so I share the table with my kid, and need to quickly rollout all my stuff and then hide it back:

Tapered the false keel, and also a bit tapered the real keel (just for a sake of beauty):

OK, here is what I did and the results.

I clamped the glued up piece (started with the 'burnt to bare') in a wood vise. I used another piece of wood leaning against the top part and hit it with my calibrated hammer. I did the same thing with the other two, hitting it with about the same force.

All three pieces sheared where I had clamped it and none broke at the glue joint.

I then tried to break the remaining parts with pliers. Indeed the 'bare to bare' splintered some more but not at the glue line (top left). The 'burnt to burnt' (right) broke a sliver at the glue line, and the third one ('burnt to bare') did break through the burnt joint leaving burn marks on the bare side.
It felt like it took about the same amount of force to break each one.

My conclusion is that it makes very little difference if you sand the burnt edge or not. Al least with the glue I used. I suggest that others might try something like this with other adhesives.

Hey Mike. Nice work so far!

FYI - I've had three Artesania kits and have ALWAYS had to purchase more wood for some section or another.

    Hello Mike

Planking both sides evenly is an important step as glue drying can cause keel warpage.

It you haven't already seen it I highly recommend DanV's thread on how he fixes Boo-Boos and Oopies.
    http://modelshipworld.com/index.php?/topic/814-how-i-fix-boo-boos-and-oopsies-mistakes-by-dan-vadas-share-your-own-fixes-here/#entry11303

He covers filling gaps in planking and straightening a Fully framed keel that is warped among other things. His Vulture build is a must read also.

On the not enough wood issue. I have had GREAT luck getting wood from Mr Cantin, whom sells on ebay. I have ordered 3 times from him and even sent wood for him to cut and have always been pleased with his speed and wood. Mahogany may be hard to match but if your interested, I highly recommend his service, I have ordered on Saturday and had deliver by Wednesday, with all cutting done to my custom spec's, of course that is within the US. I do know he ships international.

To me your planking looks great, There's nothing there that a bit of wood dust and PVA and a few dozen hours of sanding won't make look beautiful. Congrats on the 1/2 way point.
