ChadB reacted to mtaylor in Brig Eagle 1814 by ChadB
Love the stove. If not for your hand, I'd think it was lot bigger. Moving panels on the shot locker/pump well... low whistle and wow.

Not a huge update but a couple small projects that took quite a bit of time. Finished the pump well and shot locker and the Brodie Stove. I did quite bit of research on the well and shot locker and really never nailed down anything better than this. I'm happy with it and my kids thought it was awesome that the little sliding windows actually worked. The Brodie stove is actually my second one- the first I completed and then realized that it was too big. I had gotten lazy and pretty much copied the size directly from TFFM books. Second go around followed scale best I could (the stove on the Eagle was the one pulled out of the Alert- the first capture of the war by the Essex) and added a bit more detail I was able to find on a model from the Royal Museums Greenwich**. The stove will go somewhere safe until it's ready to go in. Next up is deck beams and some metalwork for the outside of the hull.

Thankyou Phil, I took a leaf out of your book and did some off piste manufacturing 😀
Thanks Chad, this stern has caused me quite a few headaches but it seems to be coming together slowly.
Cheers 👍

Your full build looks real nice so far! Sterns are not easy but yours is coming along very well!

Thanks for that Chad!!😀.
I have to admit that I have not spent as much time on this as I have on the full build. But it does keep calling me back when I'm waiting for some glue to dry.
There's still quite a few bits and pieces that still need making and fitting, but there's no rush.
Till next time
Cheers 👍😀

Hi, it's been a while since I've been on the Xsection, but had extra couple of hours in the workroom so made up one of the gangways. The brackets are wood and not metal but I don't think it matters to much. I can't fit it til I've rigged the cannon. Still got the other one to make.
That's next time though.
Cheers.
Thanks to all for the likes and looking in 👍😀

Hi, an unexpected day off, (waiting for a scaffold to go up at work)
So I am doing the treenails on the hull. Not been on this because I've been trying to get the full Triton POB build moving forward.
But today I thought I'd work on the Xsection
Treenails? done properly they look fantastic but I don't have the patience or the dexterity to make them fantastic. After putting them on this build I'll think long and hard about doing them on future projects.
That's it for now.
Thanks for looking in and the likes.
Cheers 👍
Also posted a couple of photos of my attempt at the moulding for Triton full build.

Johann,
While your entire build is absolutely stunning, I marvel at your metal work and attention to detail. Very motivational!

Very nice start so far! Although I don't think it will fix the problem entirely, when you are aligning your pieces move the first futtocks so the red line from the centerline joint is right over the centerline on your frame drawing. Looking at the photo on the right above you should nudge that futtock down a bit. Lined up right there it looks like you'll have a bit of extra space where you sit on the keel if you sand back to the lip, and the keelson side will be a bit wide also. Reposition that and give it a go. I suspect that might be the problem with the third futtock and the difference just keeps multiplying. Or I'm just looney and your photos are playing with me eyes 😜.
Chad
EDIT: Much better with a visual... put the blue lines on the red lines and i think that will fix your issue!

I had missed one of your updates until Phil posted there was a gun barrel in there somewhere. Did you cut out your moulding and then scrape it or vice versa? The ends look a little soft which is why I was asking. I found it useful scrape it down in one long section and then cut cut it so you can discard the ends where you don't add as much pressure. Either way, it's an art! Great job so far!

I'm surprised you do not have "From a Watery grave: The Discovery and Excavation of La Salle's Shipwreck, La Belle." It's a fantastic book with boatloads of information on the ship, artifacts, and history of the expedition. It's written by the gentleman who oversaw the excavation.

Thanks Chad, the moulding was scraped in one long piece then cut, and yes it is an art, one I'm still practicing. I have made a more decorative pattern and practicing on a 3mm piece of walnut and I'm pleased to say I'm getting there. I will post some photos when I get it right.😓
