Nothing eats blueberries like a bear! Let them have all they want, don't get between Mom and the kids and they won't bother you. Except for your recipe .
I trust things work out for you up North. I sense your deep concern. Good luck, Popeye.

I got the cracks filled using Chris's method of finish and sawdust and then sanded with 400 grit. I'm holding on the 600 grit sanding until the whole outside is planked. All the gunports have been squared up per the drawings. So far, so good in my estimation but it can be better. I'll turn her and do the "not the wall side" and see if I can improve. I'll probably revisit some of this side after the other side.
I'm re-thinking my main wales. Only the top one will be ebony, the rest are blended in to it and the regular planks so I'll go with the swiiss pear and leave it natural for that. At least the ebony that's there will help set the tone for the sheer. A darn sight easier to work with.

I don't think the stern face is big enough for a full monty.......it does look rather bland....how about we spice it up a little:
or......I could follow Keith's lead and do this:

Nice work Bob. I too have become a fan of Boxwood for it's nice crisp finish. Used well on your boat, looks really nice!!

Wow! The planking came out real good! So good in fact it made me re look at my mayflower and say to it "that is what YOU are supposed to look like!" - see, you made me talk to my boat! Curse you Popeye!!! (Although it hasn't answered me yet, I think it is shunning me). I will put your pictures up around it on the desk and shame it into submission!!

Hello all,
Since my last posting I have completed the thwarts and have started working on the aft seats and locker. I used boxwood on all the thwarts. Again, this was done to get a clean line with the scriber.

David,
Yes, I totally agree with you there! I haven't checked that far ahead in the plans yet, but that's sort of what I have "planned." I made a ton of rings for the guns and various other hardware/deck fittings, and I haven't touched the ones in the kit yet. But that is good to know- I'll check out the plans.
Larry,
Yes, the guns are a sizable project in and of themselves, due to the numerous parts required and amount of detail (which is up to one's preference and skill level of course), and the fact that there are 18 of the carronades and two long guns (which I haven't even started yet!). Wood, cast metal, eyebolts and rings, rope and blocks, and some paint... times twenty... (The rigging alone takes quite a bit of rope, and more so if you turn your own on a ropewalk- a few pages back I enumerated how much of the breech lines and gun tackle rope I needed to make, somewhere around 6-10 feet of breech line and about 60 feet of turned rope for the tackle lines!)
But again, I stress the importance of the assembly line and doing things in batches/stages!!! This serves a few purposes:
1. Breaks the whole process down into manageable parts/sub-assemblies that don't take too long or are too difficult by themselves.
2. Since one step at a time is being done on all the guns (or any part of the build that has multiples), it ensures that the quality is the same and things turn out the same.
3. Repeating the same step in a row helps with practice and reinforces the hand-eye coordination and muscle memory and thus builds confidence.
4. It ensures that no detail or step was missed on one of the units/guns (like missing an eyebolt or something on one of them).
Bonus: Once you've gone through all of the individual steps, you look at your desk and there's twenty completed guns lined up and sitting there, ready for installation!!!
That's my take on it anyway, and it has definitely made this whole adventure less intimidating! And, just like in chess, I'm getting to the point where I can start seeing a few steps ahead, so I can plan for the future and really see the importance of what I do now and how it affects things later on!
Anyway, enough "zen" for tonight- it's almost 2am (been up since 7am and a loooong busy day), and back to the job hunt tomorrow!

I made the Pulpit Rail out 3/64" brass rod. It's been super glued together, think it hold up the best this way. Still need to build the brackets to mount it to the pulpit and deck.
Once finished it will be painted and wrapped with thread to duplicate what was on the actual boat, here's a quick sample I did to make sure I was going to like the final result.

Well well well, Hidey Ho Good Neighbors!
It seems I have stumbled on a bit of good ole fashioned irony.
I took a break from they Mayflower due to the monotony of the stanchions and decided to work on this here Willie. Laying the deck...
The monotony of laying the decking!!!!!
/sigh.
Anywho - I definately have some more on the hull to do, but was itching to get some decking layed so went at it. Very straightforward, the hardest part so far is the trimming of the angles along the waterways, but other than that they are laying in pretty well.
I have not decided if I am going to go bare wood or paint the deck per the ship and the instructions. I think a lot of that will have to do with how clean I can (or can't) get the edges for bare wood. I really like the look of bare wood, but we shall see!!
Here is where the Willie sits so far, still a bit to go.. but onward we trudge!!!
So, just wanted to get up something to say look! I am working I am working
Back to the grind or so they say!
Until next time!
Enjoy and happy modeling!!!

SkerryAmp reacted to Jaxboat in Acrylic over oil based stain?
The keys are listed by the previous two comments. Make sure the stain is thoroughly dry and sand to provide a surface for mechanical adhesion of the paint. And if you have concerns you can always take a piece of scrap and apply the stain let it dry and sand and then then apply the acrylic paint. If it beads up or "fisheyes" you have a problem. To test adhesion, let it dry thoroughly a few days and then take a piece of painters blue tape press it firmly on the painted piece and pull. Should be little or no loss of adhesion

SkerryAmp reacted to Jay 1 in Acrylic over oil based stain?
Paddy, S. Coleman's suggestions are spot on. I've painted over with acrylics, stuff where I've used Danish oil or oil-baed Minwax. If you can, don't stain that area but if it can't be avoided or etc., then make sure the oil-based finish has completely dried, then give the area that you're going to paint a light sanding with some fine grit sand paper.

SkerryAmp reacted to samueljr in BOUNTY by samueljr - Mamoli - refit
Hi All,
Seeing how I have so little else to do..........LOL? I thought I'd take on a self -indulgent project of sorts. Let me explain.
A while back a local builder (to me) asked if I would be interested in finishing his BOUNTY. He started it about 15 years ago and for a number of reasons has never finished it. Now that he has retired and has time he finds himself no longer interested in modeling and would rather work on his motorcycle.
I guess there's no accounting for taste..........
Having SO MUCH FREE modeling time on my hands I of course said sure. So now I own a BOUNTY.
The model was about his third project and he made some very sincere attempts at "bashing/upgrading" the kit based on McKay's AOS (which I have also taken possession of from him). Alas, being only his third ship the attempts found a wide range of success or failure.
So here's what I'm going to do (I think)
I'm going to break the build down but not disassemble the kit as a whole. It will almost be akin to the refits the Admiralty would undertake when bringing a damaged or purchased ship into service.
Over the next few posts I'll be describing in some detail what I intend to do with each aspect of the ship and we'll see where it goes from there...........
I've attached a few pics. Unlike ESSEX or any of the Expo projects the pics will be from the work bench only. I'm not going to the trouble of the whole background/lighting "thing" for photos.
And as always for those of you who will inevitably ask............... I don't know at this time if I'm including sails (but feel free to ask again and again)............ LOL

Thanks

it's as I mentioned........only one model can be worked on at a time. I started this a long time ago. I used to have a berthing shelf on the wall near the table, where I would put the ship I was working on to clear the kitchen table. when I started the hobby back up.......up went the shelf again {we had moved since then}. when we moved here there is a hallway that only goes to our front door. it's closed off, so it is a dead space......no dust. it's a perfect place to store the ones in progress
I just threw up the two bottom shelves....I'm going to lower them to accept masted ships. we only go out there to get the mail.
