In March my lathe was still a 30 years old mounting of my Bosh drill, not quite high technology. In the next series of photos you see the making of the gun deck stanchions.

    Happy Thanksgiving fellow MSW Members
Just a little update on my progress. I am still gluing frames together as I sit here smelling all the good things cooking in the kitchen . I had planned on finishing the gluing today but I fear once I eat the gluing will stop and the napping will proceed.

    Thanks for looking in.

I just got a new listing of towboat and riverboat plans available from John Fryant of Paddlewheels & Props.  He now has the Alan Bates plans available - I was worried that these plans were lost to us when Alan died.
I thought I would share them with the other riverboat fans.

    Hello every one.

This is were il do my build log, il attempt to keep it updated as much as i can, with the English winter beginning work will be slow but i've made a start.
Due to limitations with my right side and poor use of motivation skills of my right hand il not be doing things as per a normal build some parts wont be in sections but in complete lengths.

Thank you for the access to to plans section all downloaded, also thanks to our member Bubblehead for the files you sent, much appreciated.

Plans all printed on A3 paper multiples on the smaller parts and the A0 and A1 plans stitched together.
I started with the keel pieces and deadwoods, I also started on the build jig. I will not start assembly yet as i want to craft all the frames before i do.
Production of sawdust has started at last ^^... I'm having problems posting photos in correct order i do apologise but i'm sure you will all see the progress.

Today I did the keelson and false keel . The keel is made of red oak the false keel is blood wood, and the keelson is cherry.

i also rough cut the frames , all at once . I will go back and trim them up and sand them down one section at a time starting with 5 and working my way to c . Not for any special reason just the heading  I have chosen .

sooooo many pieces  lol let the fun begin

Shipyard was not very productive this week, work got in the way . But I did make a little progress I cut and shaped the keel.

and i cut out the templates for  the framing and started gluing them on a piece of 3/16 “x4”x24”  red oak .

i will finish gluing them them up today and start cutting them out on the scroll saw . I will wait to start gluing them until I go to the hardware store and pick up a few sheets of glass to ensure the frames are straight .

    thanks for looking in

    Hello Fellow MSW Members

I am going to attempt the Cross Section for my next build , this will be my third wooden boat model .So with that being said , don’t expect a master piece as I am a true novice. It took me a week at least to try and figure out what wood and how much  to purchase . I am sure I probably purchased more than needed but I figure what I don’t use on this build ,  I will someday on another I’m sure and to be honest some of what I ordered I didn’t plan on ordering but once I got on the site and started ordering, I couldn’t help it.

    Here is what I ordered:

while I  wait for my wood to arrive I have some teak and figured I’d play around and try my hand at building a cannon as I have never done one before .

First I used a flashlight to trace the parts for the cannon, because I only printed on set and ran out of ink (well at least that’s what it’s telling me ,but seems like I just replaced the darn thing ) and didn’t feel like running to the store and I couldn’t talk the admiral into going.

i placed the print  down on the lens of the flashlight and put a piece of  card stock over it and used a colored pencil to trace the plan, I use a color pencil to be able to see that I didn’t miss anything. With black ink or pencil the image and pencil lines make it hard to see.

i then used exacto knife to cut out template.

using a a small amount of glue I glued the templates to a piece of teak I had already previously prepared to the proper thickness.

Using the scroll saw I cut out the templates in a general shape.

I then used files, sanding blocks, and sticks to finish

Then I cut out some bits to make the front and rear axle spindals

that’s where I’m at for the day .I will continue to work on the cannons while I patiently wait for my wood order .
I hope y’all will follow along on this adventure and help me out along the way

    Thanks
    Derek

    Hello,

one guy more building the Triton - as same in here do scaled in 1/64. As I'm completly unfamiliar with the complexity of a ship's riggimg I decided to build a hull model. As I do not own a lyth I'll use the information from the Gardiner's book "The History of the Frigat" to be free to omit all the 28 guns ad the swielguns, too.
    Yes
    I'm a scaredy cat.

Tomorrow Im going to print and copy my pile of files in the copyshop.

Due to the interst in frigats and my wish to build in a group I decided to take the nice Triton of the Meremaid Class. So I'm going to share my ups, ops and downs with all of you.
I decided to build her in 1/64 due to the size of my flat, as some others also do.

So I don't expect to get a Museums-able model out of my bonsai workshop on the one hand and on the other hand I hope not to get something I'll have to hide for the public in an open fire place. So I'll try to build something intermedium.

Before the very beginning I'd like to have some more literature beside the Gardiner. Is there some thing you would advise me to buy for this build aside the AotS book of Diana I've shot at Ebay and 'm waiting for?

Thanks for your help and friendly intrest.

    Hi,
Now that the dust has settled on the start of a new school year I've managed devote a bit of time again to this project and have made some more progress ......

Shaping the fore and aft deadwoods was holding me up a bit as I tried to make sense of the various sectional profile drawings. My inexperience was evident as I tried to juggle the various profiles and much time was spent working through the other build logs in this section. They certainly helped, and then I came across and followed the link that Dan Vad mentioned in a post referring to his HMS Vulture build. This proved to be a great help and I can see myself visiting this regularly as my build continues - thank's Dan!

In the end you just have to dive in and have a go...

Using a combination of thin brass sheet and acrylic templates pinned to the aft deadwood the sides were reduced to the required shape.

My first attempt at tapering the lower end of the inner post was not as successful as I had hoped so a second had to be made.

The rebates were then cut in the stern post with a scalpel and lower area worked to match the ajoining components prior to being glued together.

A carving knife proved an effective way to cut the curving rebate in the stem and subsequent shaping of the fore deadwood. I expect there will be a bit more work ahead on these later.

At last we have a keel!

... and work begins on the frames ......

    Cheers,

    Graham.

Greg:  I agree, now that I look at the problem again.  That's what I'll do.

Frame #5 has no mortises so I glued (epoxy) and screwed (1-1/4" #6 wood screw) it onto the keel.  I let it dry in clamps overnight.  A milestone!  Next I will temporarily mount frames 4,3 and 2 to mark the mortises for the sills and lintels, then cut them off the model.

I'm finishing up a number of small tasks before starting to mount the frames on the keel.  I'm marking out the rabbets for the gun port sills and lintels, and adding some temporary bracing across the top timbers of the frames to stiffen them.  They are attached with Weldbond, so I can dissolve the bond with alcohol.  The first photo shows my build board with the keel and false keel screwed to it.  The keel assembly is long on both ends so it can be trimmed flush after the hull is removed from the board.  The second photo is my brace for ensuring all the frames are plumb.  The lines represent the top of the frames and the lines for the rabbets to receive the sills and lintels of the ports.  The third photo shows a frame in place with a temporary brace across the top.
