The side of the ship that goes up against the wall is much more simple in construction. Flat sides, just have to mimic the profile of the “fancy” side.

I also started the frames for the stern. Lots of figuring and staring and thinking went on.  But I got it done.

I don’t know why this picture loads upside down, I tried flipping it before loading and it came in upside down both ways.

The garage is a disaster at this point...

There's certainly a lot of airfields around East anglia,  I have three in a eight mile radius from me . Great Ashfield,  Rougham and Rattlesden .
Rattlesden is now a glider club, Rougham is surrounded by a large industrial estate but they still fly light aircraft from there and Great Ashfield is now a private airfield with a grass landing strip.  There's still a few old buildings on the site but mostly falling down and neglected which is a shame.

Wow thank you for the brilliant photos of your grandad . It's amazing that he was just up the road from where I live and 35 missions.  I take my hat of to legends like your grandad.  The model is now at the Rougham Tower Museum near Bury St Edmunds, well worth a visit if you're in the area.
    Thanks again

Progress on carvings is moving along. I have matched the port QG to the starboard and am now working on the first of the sculptures that will line the outside curve of the taffrail.

I am not completely certain just what/who is being portrayed as none of my drawings nor the cast pieces are very clear. My wife said they look like a stripper on the head of a dragon so I’m going with that for now. We will see what emerges...

I wish I was better at figure carving but that will come with time and practice so for now, I let my imagination run wild!

In other projects, I have started the drawings for a new scratch build model that I have been wanting to do for a long time. I am designing a cross section of La Couronne. I am making it in 1:48 scale which will yield a model approx. 12” wide, 12” tall and 8” deep. (30.48 x 30.48 x 20.32 cm) I will not include rigging as that is not the point of this model. The main mast will stop a short height above the gunwales.

I am wanting to provide a detailed view into the construction of La Couronne and as such I plan on replicating framing and planking as accurately as I can for the early 17th century. While I have found some great works addressing some of these practices, the early 17th is still much assumption and comparing similar practices from multiple countries. I know there will be errors but I feel that my guesses are at least educated ones.

My reason for choosing La Couronne to model is simple really, I wanted a cross section of a ship I have built to display next to each other. The other main reason is that I also wanted to do something that is not readily available. Not there is anything wrong with a Victory, Constitution etc cross section, but there are already a lot of those out there. My hope is that I am documenting all of my steps through these early design and later through the building that I may be able to offer the plans at least to others and put a new model into our hobby. That is a long way out, but a goal I feel worth pursuing.

Here is a first look at my drawings. I have the outer hull planking and wales, drawn in. I have also designed the framing as close to real practice as I could. They will not be made in one piece but instead their individual components, floor, futtocks, top timbers, naval timbers, keel, keelson, etc. I have located the decks and am now placing the interior planks, clamps and knees. I still have a lot of items to check off with mast, ladders, deck framing, and a myriad of other details but I am getting there. Eventually, I will start a log for this project to show how I came up with the drawings and of course the build itself.

As you can see, lots of work and this is just one view. And it’s by hand as I don’t really like computer drawing. 😀

My pleasure Kevin, glad to be of help....

Pale Yellow is a color variation of Zinc Chromate which was the metal preservative used on the interior of aircraft of the period... If it had field maintenance you could easily see some on the interior of aircraft and early in the war you could see entire aircraft interiors painted in it, but not often..... Generally they were zinc chromate green... It became ubiquitous in aircraft, of the period, (especially US aircraft) British aircraft were either Green or Yellow depending on availability.... Eventually, wooden aircraft were being painted in an alkyd oil paint called Interior Green..... There is a difference, Interior Green was a semi gloss, Zinc Chromate green was dead flat.... ZC Green was a shade or two lighter than Interior Green as well.....

Portions of the interior being partially Yellow Zinc Chromate is period correct.......

    Kirill4,

Thanks for your images and your comments much appreciated -

I think that I will, at the base of the three masts, just install knighheads with sheaves within their bases - along with horizontal bars for the main and formast.
Pins will be located at the several bulkhead railings and along the sides within upper railings. Think that I will also skip complete sails on this project - maybe just adding two furled examples to lower main and foremast. all upper yards will just be lowered without sails as in the image below. The main halyard block was a guess - some museum builders included them others did not - will add one to foremast as well Hmmm?

Again thanks for your notes and images.

    Good day,
Understood about location of belaying pins... most probably railings are the best places for them in this case...:)
Regarding fitting or not tie halliard block I don' know exactly about SOS case?
The only thing ,if You decided to fitt them or don't fitt and use jeers ,anyway than all masts should be fitted in the same way .
I know there was difference in english and continental ( Europe)way of  arrangements of lower/ main sails...
First, english tradition, mainly used jeers ,not tie halliards....but this is depend on period of couse,in the begining England  use tie halliard as well...
there is scans from R.C.Anderson's book
on this engravings surely we could see tie halliards blocks of fore and main sails

I'm afraid not Lou the one I am doing is the one from the 385th bomb group located at Great Ashfield airfield near Elmswell Suffollk and she was painted olive drab . The church in the village has a memorial to the guys who didn't return. I must admit that other one looks very unusual with the camouflage on it .
    Thanks for looking

    Hi Mates,

As always thanks so much for dropping by, and the likes. AND thanks to members who are interested in following this project – so kind!

Some minor busy work details; waiting for an order from Cornwall to finish up and finally install the main deck and attach side panels.

In the meantime doing other bits that need to be done as well. see image notations....

Next on the list is cutting and framing the deck grids.  Also doubled ordered some ladders – intend to attach two ladder frames together then trim and cut to allow for curved looking stair banisters – TBD need to figure out how to do that so that it looks “ok”,
Then will finally second-plank hull - Not sure how to do that - so hesitating - Should planks be caulked? Should scarf joints also be included. Treenails will be a concern as well. Hmmmm??

    Regards,
