Well after work today i scratch built a stairway from some cypress of some discription it has a nice fine grain.. They are built at 75degrees and seem about right, number of treads are matched with that in the picture.. about 6.

Next i will be scratch building some barrels to go in hull and trim out interior before planking, regards Ollie

Thanks so much Jeff, appreciate your comments... I assumed a steep angle would be the case and yes a rectangular opening, that makes sence..  You have helped me already..   Much thanks.  Ollie

I look forward to any more replies that anyone has.. I am very appreciative..

I have made sure mast fits as the deck hole was way out with groove below originally..  and  well its looking like a ship for a moment.

Now i have started my modifications...

I am painting and coppering one side of the hull and other side being left timber finish with a cut away of hull to show planking and some of interior. (including stairs or ladder and rum kegs in bottom of hull)  It as all still very strong..

here lies my first ponderings...  I have some pictures to work with but the detail is very grainy. I can make some of it out... sail cupboards on left anothe rcupboard on right perhaps..

What im wondering in particular is would the main gangway have stairs or a vertical ladder coming straight down into below?  I am thinking stairs as it would be very hard to bring large items or take injured or sick crew up a ladder

Also wondering how much platform and what sort of opening would lead to steps / ladder.   A round hole through deck or rectangle?

Any help or ideas would be very much appreciated.. Thanks Ollie

Hi guys, im off to flying start and starting to understand how it goes together..  I have done the fairing and removed deadwood, i'm happy with how it is going. I am using a few different glues that are very strong and set fairly fast... I saved a lot of time with fairing by making two tools - 40 grit paper on a piece of quadrant so it can curve sidewards as needed and 40 grit on a piece of stiff plastic that can bend longways.. They are great... I dont mind that the edges are a bit coarse as this will help glue adhere..

Hi everyone. Before rushing into buying my kit i first wanted to setup a really good work space, so i built/renovated one..  Kit arrived yesterday - 17 Oct 2013

And did some scratch building of smalll items to get back into fine timber work... I made a shipping crate out of some old timber that has been sitting for many years from dads instrument building years.. (western red cedar) I believe.

I found these series of 8 collectors plates and 5000 were made, based of paintings done by an Australian Maratime artist, Dennis Adams (1914 - 2001) He studied at the Royal Acadamy in London. I got one for a good price on ebay and made a local timber "Silky Oak" (from a old house renovation) into a plate stand.. It is good inspiration for the build and will look great with it finished..

I have fitted and tweaked some parts but no glue yet. I am not familiar with the all the terminology as its not only my first build of this calibre and i dont know that much about sailing...   I love to learn and am very handy, though i am glad i have you guys to help me out.. i can see many moments of perplexed pondering... Hrs count so far - 1.5 Hrs.

    Regards Ollie

Totally agree Ollie, sometimes it is good to make people 'work for it' in the sense that they don't see everything in one go, I like paintings with that quality too, you can discover something new even after many viewings!

Thanks Eamonn. Your support is always appreciated. You cant see the little barrel really until you poke your head down and in a little. I like putting a few extras for people to find depending on their level of curiosity..

Oh and the Steps, both inside and outside the bulwarks look the business too.. there is a wonderful sense of realism about the build.

Thank You for posting that Richard, really brings home the scale of those beasts ! the timbers are immense, I watched two Irish 'Tall' Ships being built from the ground up, but their scantlings would not come near that one, those Knees are impressive.
The head room aboard surprised me, was she adapted and built to a modern persons height, or are the plans 'all new' do you know?

Wow!! Cool video.  I can't even imagine how much more difficult it would have been without some modern tools and cranes.
It really made me think about how much of an investment every ship was to a country.

    Hi all,
I am still working on the deck. The jogging is not coming out as I had hoped and I am reworking it... again.

Meanwhile, I found this video on a different site and thought it might be of interest. It is time lapse of a full size tall ship being built. One of the things I liked is it helped me better understand the scale of models to a full size ship.

    Hope you enjoy it.

    Ahem ....

On the first day of the build (but not the first of the build log), the assembled masses cried out unto CaptainSteve:
"Give us Glue Action !!", they demanded.

And so CaptainSteve didst comply ...

But the masses wouldst not be satisfied so easily ...
"There shall be planking", they said. "With what shall you hold it in place, for you have but five fingers ??"

And thus, CaptainSteve undertook an adventure to the hobby store, whereupon he were to purchase planking clamps, two packs
thereof, $12.50 per pack of six.
Thence, he didst undertake to assemble the rotten little things.
"Arr ... these be a right PITA !!" he did declare-eth.

Next, the horde didst shout-eth, "Cut something !!"
And again, he relinquished unto their request, saying "I name thee Rabbet."

Still the gathered throng wanted more ...
"We demand sawdust !! You must make us sawdust", they hollered and didst yell-eth.

"Arr !!", CaptainSteve did reply. "Nay. Tomorrow be Sunday, and I must go forth to see the man known as CaptainAndrew.
I must partake of his barbecued meats, drink-eth his beer, and swim in his pool. For 'tis summer time in Australia, and it
be bloody hot !! Your sawdust can wait !!"

All Righty Then.. Here's a few gratuitous Clamp, Peg & Pin Shots for all ye folks into that kind of thing (You Know Who Ye Are.. For Shame!    )
To Quote Father Ted.. 'Down With That Sort Of Thing'  ...  'Careful Now'... !
(Anyone out there who doesn't know 'Father Ted', just Google it, and enjoy.  There was actually a Fr. Ted festival over in the West of Ireland last weekend and people from all over the world came to it!   )

    Ok on with the show..
Got some more planking done this morning, the Port side is slowly catching up with Stbd.  I'll catch up fully before continuing on down both sides as I think I'm at the Wale Height on Stbd. !
When they are level I plan on planking the Stern immediately below the Transom Piece, that way the Hull Planking will Overlap the edges of this Stern Planking.. I might even plank the Transom itself as there is a Walnut Surround to go on it and the contrast could be interesting!

Thanks for checking in and have a great Weekend ok

Thanks so much Jeff and ZyXuz.  I appreciate it...  I only use basic tools and a keen eye.

I am well into scratch building the barrels for under floor.. It s been 3 hours at least over 2 evenings..

I cut strips at angles and made them all in one tube.. because the lengths are wedges, when i sand the curve at ends of barrel it gives the appearance of planks narrowing and in fact they do, just not as they really woud, but working at this size you cant build like you would a fulll size item, so one has to improvise a little.

I used "sika" super glue. it is good quality, then i filled tube with an expanding glue that helped hold the small bits together.. These are not going to be seen from alll angles so i thought better not get too carried away,, i tend to do that..

The bands i'm not 100% sure on yet, i made prototypes out of hammered soldering wire but think i need a thinner guage,, the effect is great.. and very nice to bend around two angles

Not a worry Nigel there are plenty of different whites out there and I haven't discounted the Natural Barley..   especially if I mix some of the Warm White into it ! worst comes to the worst it will make for a good undercoat over the Walnut timber and they were only a couple of Euro anyhoo (there are plenty of Off Whites where I work so I can experiment happily, particularly as I'm the one who uses them  )

We can always resort to that 'old chestnut' Magnolia !!!

Hi all, My led project was tackled today amongst other things, quite a success..  I purchased a remote controlled 'led candle' off ebay for $11 delivered..

I gutted it and re wired and modified to suit, lost the progress pictures unfortunately.

Remote works from a bout a metre, but it will need some kind of 'line of sight' (you cant box the electronics completely if you want to remote to work properly.). It is housed inside the unit originally so it does work somewhat inside a model, but in a closed timber hull may be a bit much i think..  I get a pathway through my cut-away...

How long this setup lasts in the long term is unknown. But it will get used rarely..  And if fails its no big loss or can be replaced..

The light is appropriate looking, dim and flickers well... I may put a lantern over it instead of just a crude bulb...   If anyone wants a link send me a msg i can provide one for Australian or NZ memebers..

NOTE - it would be safest to contain batteries in plastic bag or container in case of future leakage..

I had to make a video to help show the result..Excuse my mumbling..   Ollie
