    pete48 got a reaction from Engelmann in Buzzards Bay 14 by pete48 - FINISHED - 3/4" = 1' scale - SMALL - L.F. Herreshoff design
Today, I started by making the Turnbuckles, I then turned my attention to making the Blocks, I thought about this a lot and I wanted them to look more like real Blocks. I modeled these after the Harken Blocks on my boat. Another thing that I wanted was to have the Halyards in easy reach of the Cockpit rather than have them Cleated to the Mast. ( this is better for single handing the boat )I then attached the Turnbuckles and prepped the Mast for the Standing rigging. With the stays attached to the Mast, I installed the Jib halyard Block and the Blocks for the Halyards. I then ran the rope for the Halyards extra long. Next will be to finish making the blocks for the running rigging and install the standing rigging. Here are the results

    Dear all
This is the last photos to be posted as the project is finally competed. The photo quality should be much better as I used the Admiral's new phone.

I managed to fully blacken the barrels containing the essential supplies for any yachting expedition.

Although the metal is copper so supposedly easy to blacken, there were persistent areas that did not. In the end I took the Dremel to the entire metal surface to get it to blacken. For the future though I will be using thinned black gesso and then dip the parts in Pledge as I found this produces very good results with minimal hassle.

I also fitted the reefing lines and made a cradle. Nothing too fancy though, I used leftover wood and a cheap cutting board from Tesco. The joinery was a bid tricky but came out fine, I still need to finish the cradle and add the name to it. Butterfly Explorer!

I thought though that it would look better with the sails furled.

This was a 21 month journey but it was great fun and I learned a lot. A big thank you for your support and suggestions throughout the built and of course to Tad for releasing such a nice design.

    Re-sizing port side gun ports....
Before proceeding with the beak-head ornamentation, I decided to turn my focus to the twenty four unfinished gun ports on the port side.
The last five days have been spent building the frames and lids that must be retro-fitted into the openings originally cut according to the plan sheets.  Again.... after discovering the scaling issue with each.

The first two pics showing the creation of very small lid rings from staples....

Construction of the closed lid module (left) and the open lid module (right) ....

Carefully measured re-sizing of each port opening....

Cheers guys. I can't take credit for what Keyshot does. Magic program! Here's some more CNC-ing.

As the CNC we have is 3-axes I have to flip the model around. If it was a 5 axis CNC machine I could do this without moving the model. Each cut requires a 'roughing' pass which looks like the image below. After that you run another file which is the 'finishing'. For flipping the model to cut the deck I had to make sure that it would line up exactly in the center which is why I had the image printed and stuck onto the piece of MDF. I'm using yellow-foam for the testers here. It's great stuff and cuts just like butter. My final will be done in chemiwood which is much more durable. This foam tends to dent very easily.

Thanks for the kind words guys!  Per, The other guy's building the Cheerful have set the bar high, I'm just hoping mine turns out anywhere near as well!  This thing is much more complicated than the longboat.  I've turned Chuck's advice into my mantra, Be patient and take my time.

Also, to all who hit "Like" on my posts, thanks!  As I'm sure other's have found, it's definitely motivating when I know folks are checking my work out.

    Hi Pete / Michael,

I'm not really very quick - I just stuck at it, all day and some of the night. Putting the caulking in makes it quite fiddly and slow. Their must be a better way of simulating caulking but I don't know what it is. I bet their is a thread somewhere. Thank you for the comments.

That vision of the two sisters next to each other just sped up the rate of my heart.... What beauties.
I assume the sister with the sails is the one we see on the water, in your pictures.
