Thank You, Jon, The key to a good finish is going slow, taking your time to make sure the prep( mostly sanding ) is smooth

Thank You, Patrick, It's not sad at all, The fun for me is building them, so if I can sell a few here and there it helps finance future builds, I mostly end up giving them to friends and family

Thank You, Piet, I let the first one Sail ( she is now in Florida ) I am pleased with the set of Sails for this boat

Hi David B., The material for the sails is a Sport cloth with blue ripstop nylon trim

Thanks John, I had a lot of fun that day, I did a series of sea trials for the first boat, wich was part of the build log. She sailed very well

Thank you, Nils, The Sails for this boat turned out better than on the previous 2 builds.

After a busy week ( wich still continues ) I have managed to squeeze in a few hours here and there in the Sail Loft. Ironically, Out of all the Boats I have built, Only the Buzzards Bay 14 have I made Sails for every time. ( This was pointed out to me by Kate ) After many failed attempts, I am pleased with the Sail set for this boat. ( Main and Jib ) I thought I would show the set from the previous Builds. ( # 1 is the Boat in the water) Here are the results

    Hi everyone

Hope you're all well.  Progress has been slow this week, but I thought I'd show where I'm at with Majellan.

The superstructure's painting and puttying continues, whilst I chase the glass smooth finish that I'm after.  I've also started work on the forepeak where the winches and other associated deck furniture will be stored.  The rear garage door and staircases haven't been touched since last week, so there's still lots of work to go before the stern is finished.

    Please see the photos below.

    Enjoy your weekends!

    Cheers

I drew the run of the wales using the tick marks on the laser cut bulkheads as a guide to pin down a batten strip.  Once I was satisfied that the plank run was smooth, I drew my line.  I also noticed at this point that I had made an error in over-fairing the underside of the center 4 stern frames, where the bottom of the counter meets the square tuck.  So . . . I added 1/32" wood on one of the frames, 3/64" wood on the other three, and then a further .020" on the center two.  Yeah, I had accidentally taken off a lot of material.  I feel like I'm taking one step back with every couple steps forward sometimes.  You can see the beefed up frames in the first two photos.  I made sure my shims were sanded smooth and filled as necessary since these parts of the frames will be exposed on the interior.  When painted they should look as if they are a single piece.

Knowing modelers are fond of jury rigging.  I threw in a photo of my work area showing my jig for holding the ship upside down (while addressing the stern frame issue), with a ceramic tile holding it down so it won't move . . . and the scrap wood extension I made for my lamp.  This is easily the largest model I've ever worked on, so my space felt a little cramped.

    More deck planking:-

I made a start on the planking which follows the contour of the deck edge. As explained previously these planks are much narrower. I made the planks .108 inch wide x 10 inch long which is 3.5 inch by 26 foot at full size.

It's probably worth posting a few images of the real thing at this point:-

I wanted the deck to be representative of the real thing but accepted that absolute accuracy wasn't quite achievable.

So here are a few images of progress to date:-

I was progressing well until my helper arrived and demanded some exercise!

    Update

Prototyp winch is now complete (requires a few paint touch ups)

Two of these winches go on the forecastle deck and one on the forward waist deck, behind the foremast

Two reciprocating steam drives mounted, also outer winding drums and brake. The framework was chemically blackend.

2 of these winches go on the forecastle deck and one on the forward waist deck, behind the foremast

Finally I have made also the running rigging, so we could consider Clara May as ready.

The running rigging was made using Morope`s beige coloured 0,6 and 0,25 mm ropes. The task was not so difficult as I first thought, the only problem was to quess, where all the ropes shall be belayed because that was not shown on the plan. It may be that the pins I chose were not the right ones, but at least I am happy with them.

The sail were made of our old bed sheets. First the Admiral used her sewing skills and made all the seams and edges of sails. After that they were submerged into colouring bath made of different acrylic colour and little PVA glue. And after drying sails were cut into correct shape.

Last but not least I made a cradle for the model of 10 mm birch panel. Parts for it were sawn with bandsaw, sanded and stained with dark oak colour, then glued together and voila, there we were.

And now hard thinking what to build next, because I found that building wooden ship models is really a nice hobby for me.

    Starting the deck planking:-

I decided to make the deck planking .045 inch thick. This is thicker than the previous build (Endeavour) which was circa .030 thick. The additional thickness should make the caulking easier.
The mahogany deck edge planks were glued in place taking great care to make sure they were equidistant from the centre line. It's really easy for the deck planking to become unsymmetrical about the centre line and this can look pretty bad.

I wanted something that looked like teak for the deck planks and the nearest thing I had were slats recovered from a broken wooden venetian blind. The deck planking is a bit unusual in design in that the centre line planks on the fore deck are greater in number than over the remainder of the deck. The centre line planks are also wider than the other deck planks. I decided to go for a width of 0.188 inch for the centre line planks which equates to a scale width of 6 inch.

I decided to caulk between the planks using .008 inch thick black card. This equates to a thickness of 1/4 inch which is about right fro deck caulking.

The caulking was accurately cut into strips .045 inch wide using a set up on the mill. This consists of a MDF board clamped to the mill table with a steel bar clamped into the chuck to form a guide. With the card taped to the MDF the steel bar is positioned a couple of thou above the card and this forms the back stop for the set square. The mill table is then indexed in .045 inch steps and at each step a strip is cut from the card using a craft knife.

The centre line planks are then glued in place - making sure they are symmetrical about the centre line. In the photos below you can see one of the caulking strips laid on the deck and the tail of one of the installed strips.

The centre line planks are now complete but at this stage not sanded.

The caulking effect looks pretty good.
