Hi Mike, the Key is to take your time to make sure you have lined off the boat correctly, The Garboard is just as important as the Sheer Strake , Read any book on Boat building ( The Gougeon Brothers on Boat Construction is a great book I would highly recommend it ) Here are some photos of a Herreshoff 12 1/2 that I recently completed

I'm moving on now to defining the separation of the two belts of planks on each side.  After much measuring, checking, re-checking, and redoing certain areas, I got the drafting tape where I wanted it and drew my lines.  Now it's on to carefully using tick strips to transfer the plank widths on to the frames.

I painted the wales.  This went well, but proved to be more difficult to clean up the bleeding under the tape than I had expected.  It still looks a little rough for my liking in spots, but after days of tweaking, I'm calling it done . . . for now.  I'll probably revisit it later.  Anyway, it feels good to get some color applied.  The painted wales and counter really add some interest to the natural wood!  Up next planking, planking, and more planking.

Merry Christmas everyone!  And happy Hanukah.  Enjoy whatever holiday you're celebrating!

A quick photo.  I applied Wipe on Poly to what I've done.  I like the look of the pencil "caulking".  I painted the counter using Chuck's technique of many coats of heavily thinned paint.  This is about 10 coats.  It turned out fairly evenly.  I discovered Vallejo acrylic paints years ago, so being comfortable with them, used that brand rather than Winsor & Newton.  It's funny I went to such great effort to keep my planks close and tight on the counter, and now it looks like a solid sheet!  Well, it's just practice for planking the hull I guess.

As the saying goes, the 3rd time is the charm.  If you view my post above, you'll see I wasn't happy with the drop plank on the port side.  That plank had in fact been the 2nd drop plank I had formed for that side.  The first one snapped in half when I was pre-bending it!  Though glued on with Elmer's Carpenters Glue, the plank was still quite difficult to get off.  Part of the plank behind it chipped when I removed the drop plank . . . so I had to remove and replace that one as well.  I'm a lot happier with the new drop plank.  It looks good to the eye, and the run is smooth with no kinks.  Now I can get rid of the rough look and do the final sanding of what I've done so far, apply WOP, and paint the counter, and wales.

After starting work on my Cheerful again . . . I immediately went back east on vacation for the holiday.  But I'm now back and cutting wood.  I installed the wales.  I'm going to wait to paint the wales until I have the two strakes below them installed.  I have yet to apply any Wipe on Poly since I'm not yet done with the final sanding and cleanup above the wales.  The plan then is to do the two strakes below the wales, do a final sanding of the wales and above, apply WOP, paint the wales and counter . . . and then proceed to plank the rest of the hull.

Here's where I am so far.  The wales have been added and sanded.

Been a bit since the last update.  Thanks for following along on this journey of discovery and sawdust and for the likes and the comments.

A bit of a minor/major milestone... the ship is in the cradle... YIPPEE!!!!!

The next step is start removing the build board and trimming down the frames to the sheer strake(s).

I considered pedestals versus a cradle as I didn't want to stress the keel, etc .nor did I want to attempt to put a large baseboard on at this point.  The cradle just seems (to me) to be steadier and stronger.  I noted that I do seem to get some wobble on my Constellation which is on pedestals.  It could be my method of mounting is faulty or just the way it is with them.

The cradle is 1/4" mahogany (see photo).  After finessing it into position, assembling it and re-finessing, I drilled a 3/32" hole through the cradle and inserted a brass tube of the appropriate diameter.  I mounted the cradle into position, and drilled (using the tubing as a drill guide) a 1/16" hole through the keel, frames and keelson.  A brass rod was inserted with a light coating of epoxy.  When set, the cradles were set into place with more epoxy on the brass rod and in two places on each end of the cradle.  The structure seems sound and steady.

I tried to design the cradle so as not to hide the lines of her and I think I pretty much succeeded.   At some point, the hole where the crosspieces go through the cradle will be covered by a small carving on each.  I'm leaning towards a fleur de lis.

    Anyway, here's the pictures.

Not a good day at the museum yesterday; I had several splices pull in the main rigging as I put tension on the halliards.  I've never had that happen to me before so I think I must have been getting a bit lazy and complacent as I was doing the original splices.  All fixed now all the rigging is on her, so I'm pleased that I at least got that far.

Although she looks superficially finished, there's still a heck of a lot of detail work to be done on her so it'll be a little while yet before I can sit back and admire my work.

For our overseas members who may not be familiar with the design of the T.I. pearl sheller; apart from the obvious modifications for her role as a mission ship such as the removal of the diving outriggers at the mizzen mast, the conversion of the hatch into a low accommodation deckhouse and the addition of a toilet (not present in these photos); she has some unusual rigging features.  The topmast shrouds, running stays on both masts and the mainmast flag staff are all features not found on your common or garden pearl sheller.  Why the 'Pritt' had the is anybody's guess, but they show clearly in all the photos.

I got quite a bit of work done at the museum yesterday, but naturally not nearly as much as I hoped to get done.  Both booms and the mizzen gaff are now rigged, leaving only the main gaff to rig plus the running stays to set up before I can go on to the final detail.

he detail consists of the flying topmast on the main; cleaning up all the 'Irish pennants" around the boat and finally fixing the standing rigging; rope coils; sidelights; anchor rigging; lifebuoys and footropes on the main mast - the mizzen only has a couple of spars on which the lifebuoys are housed.

I've tried including some 'baggy wrinkle' on the topping lifts as this is a very prominent feature on the photos of the 'Pritt'.  After several false starts, I ended up using chenille yarn through which I sewed the lifts.  Not a perfect solution, but it looks OK on the model.  I may have to experiment further in case I want to do the same on a future model.

Some photos of the current 'state of play' are below.
