MrBlueJacket got a reaction from sheepsail in Smuggler by East Ender - BlueJacket Shipcrafters - 1/4" = 1 foot
All seems OK. Remember, no-one will take a ruler to your hull and tell you it's 1/32" off !

If the parts are clean, no need to prime them. And for "considering not priming...." I call that inspired laziness, I do it all the time.

We already have the USS Perry, similar in size and complexity.

The hulls "should" be a little oversized to allow the modeler to bring it down to the final dimensions.

Now for the lower stays. To get the masts parallel, I must first pull the mast to port, so when I attach the starboard stay, it will pull back to where it should be.
View from the bow.

Next, I did the main stays. they end under the fife rail, so I had to thread them through the fife rail.

First order of business is, of course, to mount the deadeyes. The Newsboy did not have chainplates, she had iron rods to attach the deadeyes. I'm simulating that with brass rod. To keep them even, I made a bending jig here:
And here's what one looks like finished:
Only 23 more to go.................Hours of endless enjoyment.

Eric, we have listened to your comments. Since you finished the model, your customer file now shows a 10% discount on the next kit you buy from us.
We have plans to build the Cairo in 3/16" = 1' scale (3x the size of this one) and it will be a longitudinal cut-away to show interior details.

@MrBlueJacket Thanks for reading. As a self-employed small businessperson myself, I recognize how hard it is to please everyone and to take criticism (whether justified or not) of something you've sunk your soul into. The new larger-scale Cairo sounds like a fantastic project that will be far more likely to do justice to this amazing vessel. I look forward to seeing how that develops. Especially since I think interior cutaways are an underused niche in kit-making.

MrBlueJacket reacted to Rick310 in Flying Fish by Rick310 - Model Shipways - 1/96
Finished the skylight and the binnacle. Both were made out of boxwood.
The bars are 26 gauge brass wire that I clamped in the vice and straightened to work harden the brass. The bars are spaced .044 inches apart and the holes are a 75 drill.
Both the skylight and the binnacle were painted white per the Buttersworth painting.
I made the top of the binnacle bright per the Flying cloud model at Boston Museum of Art. Both the top and the compass box were made from cherry that was stained with Ipswich pine. The compass is brass tube with a wood dowel incert that I turned on the lathe( first time using the lathe to turn something)
I finally glued the aft storage hatch in place. I moved it aft about 1/16 inch to give more room to the aft cabin. I then glued the binnacle in placed and secured it with the thread lashings on either side. Not pleased with the results, the thread looks to thick to me, but I’m going to leave well enough alone.
I want to figure out how to make the wheel and I decided to reduce the size of the wheel box ( which seems overly large on the plans). I’m using the plans for the box from EDT’s Young America. I don’t have the skill set to make the wheel per YA so I need to see what I can come up with.
In the mean time, I working on making the 7 ladders.

I would suggest against the Durham's putty - it dries VERY hard and it will be difficult to get a nice feathered edge with the basswood. Instead, try auto glazing putty, bondo, or wall spackle. that's what we use.
