ziled68 got a reaction from maddog33 in H.M.S. Triton 1:48 scale cross section - FINISHED
    Greetings to all,
Here’s the latest update of my H.M.S. Triton cross-section. I went ahead and started working on the lower deck taking measurements from the frames and transferring them to my timber. When I had completed four of the five deck beams, I realized that I was in fact following the gun deck plans rather than the lower deck plans (way to go Murphy). What I then did was put aside the work I had thus far and got new timber to work on the lower deck with I might add, the correct plans. I then cut the new deck beams and carlings and glued them in place on top of the plans which was inside of a document protector so as not to get the plans glued to the bottom of my deck. After the deck was dry, I proceeded to cut the ledges one at a time and gluing them on the carlings after I slightly sanded the corners for a snugger fit. After everything was glued and dry, I slid the deck onto the deck beam clamps to see how she was starting to look and was quite pleased at the result. I was actually contemplating if I should go ahead and plank the frames but decided against it because I really like the way everything is coming along. What I will do is place a minimal amount of planking material on the outside frames starting two or three planks below the wales and working my way up. The following pictures will show you what I have so far.

Today I’ve managed to take the Triton out of its jig in order to start sanding the inside and outside. I used a sanding stick to work on the outside hull and was quite pleased at how quickly it faired the outside. When I turned my attention to the inside hull, I realized that the straight edge of my sanding stick was causing it to leave gouge marks. I then decided to make a new sanding stick with a ½” PVC pipe I had left over from a plumbing job I did at the house. I’ve come to the conclusion that a straight edge sanding stick is good for the outside moving it fore to aft, and the PVC pipe sanding stick is good for the inside moving it port to starboard along the frames. I’ve also managed to place and treenail the keelson down, add the gun port’s sill and trestle, and am currently working on the wales. The following pictures will show you how she’s coming along.

I was able to complete the stack set up for my remaining frames, apply the pattern to them, and cut them on my band saw. I then roughly sanded them with my rotary tool just barely getting to the line so that I can truly fare them once they are together. I dry fitted them them on the keel within my jig to see how they look. If you notice, I still have to give frames 4, 5, and 7 its preliminary sanding before I can procede to treenail them.

    Greetings to all,
Since I had to work today I was not able to get much done on the Triton. I was able to buy more timber and finish my jig for her reusing materials for the jig I made for my Vietnamese Junk. Since she is only a cross section, the jig seems small in comparison to jigs other people use while conducting full builds. The following photos will show you what it looks like and how the Triton fits within it.

I sincerely wish no one takes it to heart what I think necessary to get off my chest. When I first came across MSW, I thought it would be great to join a community that shared the love of model ship building like I do. When I came across the H.M.S. Triton I thought it would be fun and decided to give it a whirl, not so much for other people’s approval, but for the love of model ship building.
As the adage goes, “There is more than one way to skin a cat”. Keeping this in mind, I decided to build my model the way I felt comfortable doing it and decided to share my work with people that had similar interests as I do. No sooner had I posted my day’s work, when someone decided to judge me (and my methods) and leave me feeling disappointed, angry, and a sense that people were looking down their noses at me.
I decided that I would not finish the Triton, but the love of model ship building was too great and it overcame my anger and disappointment. Seeing how she was coming to life before my eyes, I thought, “I’ll build you the way I want” all the while singing Elvis Presley’s, “I did it my way”.
Now that being said, I was able to get five more frames done and upon dry fitting them to the keel, I was not able to help but smile to myself at how great she was starting to look. I still have to get more timber in order to complete the last six frames necessary in order to get started on the inside. I’ve downloaded, “Anatomy of the Ship, The 74-gun ship Bellona” and am currently referencing the items I want to incorporate into my build such as the mast step, shot lockers, pump well, pumps, and quarterdeck rail just to mention a few items. Since I will soon get the other frames completed, I will start on the jig that will support my build.  Below are a few photos showing what I have so far.

    Hello to all,
I’ve made a little progress today on the Triton. I remade the keel, false keel, and keelson at the new correct scale and also made them longer to incorporate the additional three frames necessary to add the main mast. Upon completing the keel, I marked the areas that will receive the frames to ensure everything was on the up and up.
I decided to experiment making my first frame by following Gene’s explanation on the Eagle and it really seems straight forward. After cutting the 3/16 basswood to size, I marked my working sheet in order to get the correct angles needed to follow the frames contour. Once all the pieces were cut, I laid wax paper on my drawing and placed futtocks 1, 3, and the top timber followed by the floor timber and futtocks 2 and 4. After everything was glued and in place, I placed a board on top of the frame and a car jack to compress everything and hold it in place (please don’t judge me, that’s all I had on hand). I’ve decided that what I will do is cut patterns with correct angles of all futtocks from card stock and go to town and knock out the other 11 frames.

    Hi All,
I’ve decided to try and build the Triton cross section after seeing all your great builds. I love seeing all the exposed framing details and so just have to try this build myself. I am also hoping making this cross section will help me do a better job on the Confederacy which will be my next full build.   I am using boxwood for the main structural components and my thanks to Jason at Crown Timberyard for the gorgeous boxwood he just milled for me. I plan to use swiss pear for all the planking, holly for the decking and perhaps walnut for all the deck furniture. I hope these choices will make for a nice paint with wood look once finished.    My keel, false keel and keelson images are below. I’ve made them much longer than the plans call for as I want to follow Raymond’s lead (see link below to his beautiful build) and add the main mast and yards with their standing rigging. This will allow me to gain some much needed rigging skills as I also plan to fully rig my Confederacy. You can also see the small copper tool I made to shape the notch in the keel after I started the slot using a small wood saw.   Hope some of you can follow along and help keep me out of too much trouble! Just don’t expect a fast build please!    Moderators, may I have access to the rest of the plans please?    Cheers,   Nigel.   Link to Raymond's rigged cross section: http://modelshipworld.com/index.php/topic/5545-hms-triton-148-scale-cross-section-complete)

    Greetings to all,
Well like the old adage says, “All good things must come to an end”, I am here to report that after four fun months of working on my H.M.S. Triton, I have finally completed her. Today I have placed my Triton in her permanent home as the following pictures will show. Please enjoy (as much as I do) and I sincerely hope that a few of my fellow model ship builders will be able to take something away from my experience on my Triton.
I would like to thank everyone who has looked in on my progress and have given me words of encouragement and or likes and I would also like to thank the nay-sayers who have graciously kept their comments to themselves.

    Greetings to all,
    Wouter,
Thanks for your comment about liking the way My Triton is coming along. Hopefully soon I’ll be on the sidelines admiring your Triton.
    Tim,
I really appreciate your words. Out of everyone that has “Liked” and/or made comments on my forum, you are by far the most motivated person who actually looks forward to my updates. Once again, thank you.
    Bindy,
I totally agree with you in that the mast and spars have significantly changed my Triton’s overall appearance. With the base I’ve made for her today, she stands at 29” high (736.6 mm). As for Woody, what can I say other than he wants to take our act out on the road. LOL.
    To All,
While I was waiting for my deadeyes and blocks to arrive, I decided to finish the main topgallant yard which I was avoiding due to the fact that the components were much too small for my hands. Happily I can say that I was able to complete it. I also went ahead and painted the trestle trees and top plus the yards (with the exception of the stuns’l yards) black to give my Triton more personality. The following photos will show you how she looks.

    Hello Mick,
I am glad to see that you are willing to come aboard and take a crack at the HMS Triton. I too wanted to try my hands at a POF model and the Triton seemed to fill the criterias I was looking for. She will be a fun build and I look forward to seeing you progress along.

I hope everything is fine on the home front. Sir, I must say that I've just finished going over your log and am totally in awe at your level of expertise. Chris,
I am glad summer is over so that you can get back to your Corsair. I am gald that you corrected that little mistake on the transom. Like you, if I make a mistake I try to correct it because if I don't, it will be the first place I look at whenever I look at the model. The fact that you are using belts to evenly distribute your planks on the Corsair will make it a very attractive model. I hope to see more progress.

Hello All and thanks for all the “likes” (12 in a month, hahaha)

Oh boy! I never thought that 60 pieces of wood would tell so much about the structure of a platform. I do know that much more of this work will be invisible with the other decks but do not not how, I keep keeping the things not simple.

It is quiet easy to get lost if you are trying to actually build the whole inner structure of the ship, so where do you stop detailing the different rooms…?

For the spirituous drinks and the fish* I thought that was odd to have such a reliable source in touch with the limber water… rats, fungus, dark water… So I have decided to make 3 separate rooms for all of this. Like that we were talking about the powder room on the magazine.

Here are the pics; there are lots of them from the beginning.

I ended using pieces of paper to find out the shape of the bulkhead, easier and cheapier and I ran out of balsa wood.

Here´s a lot of work between the pics above and the rest of the post but no pics of it... we are talking about 60 pieces that took me almost a week...

Here´s the magazine where I´ll move now. Just to check. The rooms and departments kind of scare me,,, how many pieces will be involved?...

Need to buy a better camera...

(*) FISH: Got a question to you, Do you think it was a room for fresh fish or salad fish? If it is salad I´ll leave the bulkhead like that but if it´s fresh I´ll have to double the bulkhead with 40mm plank (for real) on both sides (2 or 3 planks).

On another side, I have decided to dedicate 1 week to the Triton an one to the CAD on the Principe De La Paz because otherwise I´m not going to be able to end none of them…No rush in this hobby…

Best wishes and happy winter! Viva J.C. Fogerty and his CCR!!!

    Daniel.

    Hola Mija,
Sometimes you have to get the planks to cooperate with when they don't want to. What I find useful is a fabric steamer. Place the planks on the fabric steamer for a few minutes and gently bend the planks with your fingers before putting them on the frames. I hope this helps.

    Greetings to all,
I am currently requesting access to the rest of the pdf files for the H.M.S. Triton cross section. I realize that the plans are for 1:48 scale but I am choosing to go at it on a 1:24 scale. There are two reasons why I am choosing this scale; 1. at a larger scale I can add extra details to the model, 2. I have large mitts for the smaller details required for a build. Attached you will find the photos showing what I have thus far.
