  1. Welcome to the nursery as well as advanced school of ship building! Everyone starts somewhere, so dig in! Do not neglect to explore ship model home pages on the web. Model Expo offers to replace 'goof ups' in parts if you get them info. The youtube has 'how to' videos galore and loads of stuff about ships. Rate tyourself only against yourself. You will be surprised to find all kinds of tools at hobby stores and etc. I am fond of some prisoner built models. And what did they have time. Do not rush. When you hit a problem, let go for a while and return to it later when the solution, and there are many solutions, strikes you. I can speask from years of mistakes. I believe I've made every one a person can make. Hang in there.
  2. We have some things in common. I am 67. I use only an antennae for television but watch more videos. I am working on the D'Agostini Victory cross section primarily because of the online video on assembly. Take your time. Here in Minnesota we have winter which is great for a guy like me to build.
  3. Do not overlook YouTube as a source for modeling information/inspiration. Some manufacturers like D'Agostini and JoTiKa have excellent stuff. Have fun, measure twice-cut once!
  4. Welcome back. I, too, spend warmer weather outdoors. Living in Minnesota, the first snow, which just happened, is my call to build. I'm doing the Victory cross section by D'QAgostini8. Its well laid out.
  5. Welcome to what I like to think of as a "Modelers Candyland"!
  6. You can take comfort in the thought you are not alone. For years I have been trying to create a model as I see in pictures. No luck. Now I am retired/disabled and widowed so I have time to do this right. No hurry.
  7. You may want to look at the D'Agostini site on line. I have two kits and the 'how to' instructions are terrific. Even a 'geezer' like me can get good results. d
  8. After reading Moby Dick at twelve in '62 I was also drawn to plastic model ships. What drew me was the standing and running rigging. That each line has a special name was fascinating. I am awaiting the D'Agostini Wasa, billed as the most accurate kit. Who cares if it takes years. When my son returns from Korea on his retirement tour his daughter is a photographer and I'm sure she'll teach me how to take pictures.
  9. I have found useful information and inspiration from you tube videos from D'Agostini and others who model Victory. I believe there are as many ways to create a model as there are builders. Whatever you do, your creativity makes the model live.
  10. A belated welcome. My grandfather shoveled coal on an American battleship from 1911-16. We used to live in a place in Chicago called bridgeport where Great Lakes ships were unloaded. I am impressed by anyone who earns their living on the water. Enjoy exploring this site. Ask questions. People are always ready to help.
  11. Welcome. I, too, made the journey through the best years of model car building. Now I am also in the wood models. I have had no experience except what I picked up but I search the net and sites like this for info in the form or kit reviews and pictures/videos.
  12. Welcome to the hobby that can result in family heirlooms. I started in plastic also and enjoyed the build process most. With the advent of stuff like youtube I can look up stuff if I want to. Still it is the love of the build which draws me.
  13. I too have learned patience with age (67). I am no longer in a hurry. I survey the pictures in this site for inspiration.
  14. We are glad to hear from you. I know your English will improve. The point is that you enjoy the images and gain information and inspiration from them.
  15. Don't know what FAA means but that's O.K. I have never, ever, been accused of being intellegent. Cannot wait to see your Shipyard creation. I know their products but wonder if I have the skills to make the attempt. As we say in the U.S., 'Thank You For Your Service!'
  16. Welcome to what I think of as a wonderland of ship models. I live in Minnesota and have watched numerous videos of great lakes shipping. It appears to be more dangerous than I thought. Never let language stop your asking questions.
  17. You are already an accomplished modeler from what you say. Maybe you can search model companies which have graded their kits for skill levels. You are in the right place to see just what modeling can be. Asking questions is how skills are passed and never rejected here by serious modelers.
  18. I tried and failed attempting a paper model from Shipyards. So I salute you.
  19. You are a man with a plan! Research all the video you can. In addition to the images of construction there is usually running dialogue which is priceless.
  20. This is great. I keep an atlas near so I can locate places in a way I understand. I look for how modelers solve their problems.
  21. My kit arrived today. I was surprised at how quick MS was in fulfilling my order! I've not done this vessel so any tips will be useful. I do watch You Tube but there is a dearth of Mayflower kits to be seen. I used what I can watching how other ships are built. I have one problem. How do I keep my cats from my build? I tried posting pictures of dogs but my cats, like the U.S. military, don't scare worth a damn.
  22. Welcome. Remember from another oldster(O'm 67) that your question may be another's answer to a problem. Thankful you survived the last storm.
  23. You have already created a 'heritage' for your little one. Its a way to open the history of France for him. In a way we are all beginners as each new model is a beginning. My grandson is too young for models yet so I built him an all wood garage for his cars. BTW I was in Germany in the early '70's as a soldier.
  24. Please do not hurry. Take the problem with you and maybe you will find other enthusiasts to talk with. AL is one of many kit manufacturers. I like the Mosel Expo group because they offer free replacement parts for their kits. The English JoTiKa have some of the best stuff out there but you pay for it. Don't forget Google and You Tube for inspiration and help. I can say this because at 67 I have made every possible mistake and find new ones to make monthly. The worst critics are the ones who do not build themselves, the best have been at this and know the why of things which happen. Good luck at College. I an a Purdue Alum, class of '74 after three years in the army.
  25. Have you checked out the British JoTiKa models? They are really first rate. The wood quality is great and they have an eye for detail.
