  1. Hey Simon Yeah I watched that movie, im dutch so the ships was cool to see but the movie story, acting and plot was pretty terrible if you ask me When are you starting your build?
  2. Ive ordered some replacement p10 gratings, blacking agent for the brass and a cup of thread heaven. What else do i need for rigging?
  3. Worked on adding the belaying pins (dryfit) and started adding the glass parts to the lanterns. Those still need a bit of work to tidy up. Im going to continue finishing the deck fitttings, canons etc.... I had to order some more gratings cause the ones from the kit are all broken. So I might have to wait a couple of days before I can continue. In the meantime Im studying other logs and ship rigging videos to learn. PS I am aware the anchor wood thingies are wrong. I'll fix that later
  4. Yes but I think I might have to do it like add a piece of thin wire and then paint it gold. Cause the paint alone only registers if viewed from a certain angle. The handrails I painted solid and then sanded the edges so that the lighter wood shines through again creating a sharp highlight. Leftover habbit from my Warhammer painting days
  5. hi Kmart Thanks glad you like it. Im mainly using Van Halteren (hans) as reference and Great Galleons build here on Msw. He didnt post the rigging part though so for that I will look at Hans log for help. And I will need loads of help I think haha
  6. worked on finishing up all sorts of leftover jobs around the hull/decks. Trying to get a more consistent paintjob/color on the railings in the process. Fitted the guns on the forecastle. Im keeping the rigging super simple cause frankly Im not feeling up to the challenge of rigging it accurately at this scale. This one rope already drove me to frustration so yeah, dark times ahead
  7. Yeah I know i am not looking forward Especially since its the first time, it seems impossibly difficult the whole rigging stuff
  8. Yeah the one thing I cant stand about this hobby is doing 1 task 50 times the same. I guess some enjoy that but not me haha The canon color is all over the place. The black is a spraypaint primer. Others i tried variations of metallics, inks, pigment powders etc. Not decided on a look yet. Overal my model is quite a patchwork to be honest. Oh well...
  9. Worked on the Friesland for a little bit yesterday. Started making the 64 cannon port hatches. I think I won't continue adding them to the hull yet as they are super fragile and I imagine they will get knocked loose frequently when I'm rigging the masts. It does look nice though Light at the end of the tunnel for constructing the hull.
  10. Worked on the railings and balustrades some more. Slow going as usual with only a few hours to spend after the little one is asleep. But slow going is better than no progress Also I have to take out my proper camera again, cause these iPhone pics are looking kinda sh*tty
  11. I repainted and stained them indeed. The original color was bleached out by sunlight etc
  12. Ok thanks everyone for the advice. Much appreciated!
  13. Worked on the Friesland for 2 hours today to finish up that last upper deck and the railings. I am taking a little bit of liberty in this area. The Mamoli plans show differences and my Hollandischen Zweidecker plans are another variant. I also made a few calculation errors way back in the beginning of the build that I've only noticed now. So ... trying to fudge it here and there Once the railings and deck fittings are fully in place I will stain to age the woods and paint the metal castings. Probably when everything is done on the hull I will go back one final time on touching up the paintwork on all the stern decorations as well. I am not 100% satisfied with that yet.
  14. Im having a busy week at the company so progress will be slow. I managed to finish the Leds and begun finishing the deck fittings. In paralel im making all the masts and yards and reading up on rigging. Will try to post an update with pictures again soon
  15. Hi Jan I have the rope from the Mamoli kit. Its un labeled so I can only guess the quality. I also purchased some Mantua rope. If there are better materials you can recommend let me know where to buy it. I will not make my own rope. Thanks!
  16. Hi I am soon starting the rigging of my ship. Someone told me I need to prepare my rope by making it wet and leaving it hanging weighted for a week or two to remove the stretch. Is this common practice? ive not come across similar advise before. It was as he said to avoid the rigging to loose tension over the years and going saggy. Advise is welcome !
  17. Hey Jan i had planned to be far on with rigging at Duizel 2015 but I have yet to get started, and i even have much work todo on the deck fittings which will not be reachable again later if im correct. So i guess I have to lower my goals
  18. Yeah i felt that would get a bit too tacky the electronic chip and dimmer etc is already stuck in place from way back at the start of the build. Im not going to change that anymore. I dont think i will do Leds again on my next ship. Its a lot of trouble imho
  19. Hey Jan, theres a dimmer underneath the main deck i can turn to lower the lights. Right now its turned to 10 the photo also exaggerates a bit. IRL its more subtle
  20. Hi S Coleman, Now i feel sorry for being away How far along are you with building ? Mind you, ive never done rigging so from this part on it might get less informative than other experienced builders. Im quite dreading moving forward to be honest
