Yes i find working with them very userfriendly. Sometimes i use a can of black acrylic spraypaint to "prime" metal parts. It dries in minutes after which you can easily put any color on. If you like lots of golds and yellows, a brown undercoat works best to get a clean metalic finish. I use brushes. Airbrush is a lot of hassle and usually not worth the trouble of masking everything
If you want some photos/tips you can find them in my guide on the forum

The paints I use are Citadel (Warhammer miniature paints) and they are water acrylic based. This makes it easy to work with as opposed to Humbrol-like paints. Contrary to popular belief, these modern acrylic paints hold perfectly fine on metal also.
They have a range of "inks" or "washes/shades/glazes". The names are all esoteric/fantasy. But basically Nuln Oil = just black ink. Calthan Camouflage = Green etc...

Worked on finishing various odd jobs on the back of the ship. I put the center "insignia" ornament in place. Tidied up the windows. Still working on the paint job of all the ornaments and wood. I completely repainted the green stained woods and shaded them using inks. I guess the border between what is a wooden model ship and a warhammer miniature is beginning to fade ;-) In this fashion I could even re-paint the entire ship hehe.

Hey J, thanks ! I have not done a tutorial on aging the wood. I simply used inks/stains to tone them. Nothing else was done afterwards.
I must add that it is extremely difficult to get a consistent finish, especially on a large ship. So caution is advised if you want a cohesive look.

Main deck planking
Started planking the main deck. Pretty straightforward. Painted the inner bullwarks brown, instead of planking it all because it will be barely visible in the end.
Added top ornament to stern, dry fitted the back window part ornament. As with all the provided ornaments, none really fit well so a bit of fudging is required.
More work on the backside. Note I completely re-paint all metal ornaments, my process and used paints described below if you like to try this aged "look" instead of the all out bling.
Painting ornaments - My Way
Undercoat / prime your metal parts with Citadel paint (Warhammer paint). I used Scorched Brown as a base.
This is waterbased acrylic paint, and as opposed to common belief this does hold perfectly on metal parts. The Cital paints are specifically designed for (metal) miniature painting and they work very well for these kinds of things.
I then drybrushed a 50/50 mix of gold color and brown over the ornaments. This leaves some brown in the recesses, a subdued metal on the raised edges. Finally I washed it with a brown ink called Agrax Earthshade. This is a fluid pigment ink that dries dark in the recesses, giving a beautiful contrast. Finally overbrush with pure gold to taste. I kept things very "dull" for starters.
After wash/ink has dried:
Finished base look of ornaments, before adding additional color variations:
Main deck planking and deck supports
Progress on the main deck and deck supports.
Placing LED wires
Together with my friend we spent 2 evenings wiring the LEDs. They run through the bullwarks from back to front. That's why I kept the first planking open towards the bottom all this time, to allow more freedom of working on the LED wires.

Hey guys
I spent the afternoon putting all canon hatches on. I've got 2 more to do and a few ropes to finish them.
I also put all canons carriages on the ship, with a very simple fitting. I know its not historically correct but I did not wan't to go through the pain of adding full tackle. The build is already hard enough for me as it is. I think the canons was absolutely the most boring job so far, glad its over.
I will spend the coming weeks finishing various odd jobs around the hull, cleaning up some details, paint work and re-doing the anchors to be a bit more good looking. Then I think I am ready to start on the masts and rigging... drumroll!

Chris
You are doing a FANTASTIC job! I have printed out your tutorial on painting ornaments/cast metal parts. I am particularly impressed with your painting/staining method that "ages" your wood. Did you ever do a tutorial on that process? Keep up your great work.
best regards
J

Here's an example:
The wales keep their width all across.
Between, a set of planks keeps their full width.
When you get lower near the water line tapering is required.

Did not get much done today. I need some thicker black rope for my lanyards and some walnut wood or similar to make new anchors. I completely ran out. Hopefully the local hobby store has some materials for me so i can restock

Question: Is the Friesland build log of user Great Galleons still around ? I remember using it as a reference in the beginning and wanted to recommend it to someone.
