airbrush for wooden ship?

hello everyone 

i want to know if its common to paint model ship (wood)  with airbrush 

because i not like the effect of the normal brush 

 

there is someone that paint with airbrush?

 

i dont want to spend to mach money for something that it will be useless for me

i dont see why you couldnt use one, and airbrush is just for application of paint and other media. i also build many other models so i already had an airbrush on hand, this is what i use http://www.chicagoairbrushsupply.com/ba155aiandki.html  plus you need a compressor to run it. although as i see many model ships arent painted very much, and often in hard to reach or complex situations that airbrushes arent too good for unless youre using a very fine detail brush with a hand as steady as a brain surgeon. just my 2cents worth, if your unhappy with traditional brushes try using better quality ones or using sponge brushes.

I used an airbrush on my Connie. It worked very well. The key was to use lighter coats. I loved how I could get a smooth finish. Not to say I that I didn't also use paint brushes a lot on the details. That can't be avoided, but the air brush will give you a nice smooth finish over larger areas.

 

One other use for an airbrush is applying a clear coat to the ship once the hull and furniture are done. Since different paints have a slightly different sheen, I apply a matte finish to the ship. This enhances the details seen on the ship and make it look better since all parts have the same matte finish.

You can also try using a spray can if you are not going to be painting on a regular basis.

That is true. My problem (and this is just me) is I tend to overspray with canned spray - the spray seems denser. So I like the airbrush because I can really have a very fine dilute mist. It gives me more control that I get with a spray can.

I use my airbrush for so many things. I spray acrylic floor finish for my clear coat. You can look at my King of the Mississippi. Plus any other colors that I need. A little off topic, the acrylic floor finish will give you a great clear coat, it cleans up with water and is self leveling. I have used it as a under coat, or base coat for a top color. It will fill in gaps and pours with enough coats and when you spray on the color coat it finishes as smooth as glass. 

As for the airbrush, it all depends on how many models you are going to make in your life. 

You will need a fair size compressor, I have a pancake type. I did buy one of those very little ones that are for airbrushs, but I found it was always playing catch up and not giving me enough pressure.

It will do 

• Achieve patterns from a hair line to 1-1/4-inch

That's what you want, there will be times when you want a hair line, and if you are painting the hull you will want 1- 1/4 inch

Clean up is also easy, you want a brush that is easy to clean

Michael, in addition to the advice given above I would suggest you go for a single action airbrush. I have both a single and double action brush and have been using both for a couple of years. The single action is usually cheaper to buy than the double action. It is easier to use and clean. It does a great job when painting small and large areas. I assume you will be using acrylic paints as they are much easier to clean up and dry a lot quicker. I use Admiralty paints exclusively. They give good coverage, are authentic colours and can be thinned with water for use in an airbrush. My recent build, HMB Supply (in my gallery) was almost completely painted using a single action airbrush and Admiralty Paints.

The Infinity looks like a Ferrari!

 

I have used a paasche H series single acting for 20+ years. Works great, is a rock solid performer at about 1/5 the price of the infinity.

save your money on the harder-steenbeck, those are marketed to professionals,  get a paasche or badger, great brushes for a great price. then use the money you save to get a nice compressor. i will direct you to this site: https://sites.google.com/site/donsairbrushtips/   it helped me with the research and knowledge to get a good airbrush. good luck and feel free to ask any questions, ive been building plastic models for nearly 15 years

Michael, I agree with Jerry.  For many years I have used a Paasche H and got good results.  It is one of the workhorses out there and easy to use.  Unless you are going to be a pro do not bother with the Infinity and use the money you saved for a decent compressor.  Badger, Paasche, and Iwata are all made well and will work for you.  Here is a link that can give you some advice on what you need .https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tsW-vN0_lHw

the point with the infinity is that its have a stopper for not to push the batten moreand less

and its will give you the same  mount of color all the way ...

is it necessary? because i dont want to make a damage on painting...

single action means the button does a single job, meaning the paint flow is set by a screw and the button just runs the air. double action means the button controls paint mixture and air flow. single action is great for beginners, and consistency. double actions are better for experienced people and those who need to change line widths and paint flow on the fly. anyone who uses airbrushes a lot tend to have more than one, i have a single and a double action. the badger 200 old style is a single action, wereas the badger 155 anthem is a double action.

I use an air brush........wouldn't do without it.   I have a very low cost spray outfit which is sold by Testor's.......does just as good a job,  as a high priced brand.   it's a kit called the  'Amazing Air'  airbrush kit.  it run with a can of compressed air,  but I adapted it to my 25 gal compressor.  I also have a spraycraft gravity feed,  and an Aztek 320,  which I have all the accessories and two of each tips {never used}  to know more about the Testor's airbrush kit:

Michael, if Amazon does business in Israel try them I think you will find an airbrush for less.  My advice would be to go with a Paasche H or  Badger Anthem.  I have been a happy user with the Paasche.  And I have heard many good things about the Anthem and they are both more  than adequate for our hobby.

if your set on that brand, id get the ultra or evolution. they are the base line models and are more than adequate for our job. honestly id go with the ultra, its half the price and will do the same job. you can always upgrade later.

If you sit the can in a saucepan of warm (IMPORTANT..warm not boiling) water for five minutes the internal temperature and pressure is increased and the spray is a lot finer.

 

Practice on some scrap first but you will notice quite a difference. The paint dries much faster too with the elevated temperature the solvent evaporates quicker.  

I rarely use an airbrush now. A spray can works fine for me.
