Finally garbords are on, and rebate has been cut into the stem.

Now its time to plank.

It is a bit unconventional leaving the false keel off,

but that will make it easier to get the thickness right.

It will be fixed on before 2nd planking

I will probably make it a bit higher, as it is now

there is not much showing under the planking.

Don't know how far you've got (unless you're holidaying in the Whitsundays or somewhere else). Just a thought - I had problems with the cannon ports in that they were slightly to small to allow any elevation on the cannon and in fact the lids were resting on the barrels. May have been me as I dumped the metal trunnions and produced wooden ones however just something to be aware of.

Hi Rick, unfortunately not in the Whitsundays. Had a bit of time off over Christmas

but haven't got much done. Other things keep intruding, went back to work last 

Monday. Too many customers at the moment and its not going to get any better.

 

I have managed to get a few planks on, and have been experimenting with different methods of

holding them in place I have given up on the chart pins and now will just use the

planking screws.

The plank with the 90 degree twist is a pain in the butt to make fit.

It did glue in better than what the photo shows.

I have started steaming only those planks in a container in the

microwave and it softens them enough to allow them to twist.

And then use the planking screws to hold them in place until they dry.

Then I take them off and do a final fit and glue in place.

 

Yeah I know doing it the hard way, each plank is tapered, fitted and glued in place.

I think that now is the best time to practice planking and work out methods.

 

 

Thanks for the tip about the cannons, but the are

still a while off yet. LOL

Wow too much. 2 posts in one night.

Just a couple more photos to show some of the planks being held in place.

The 2 planks at the stern have just been microwaved and are drying.

The others have been glued.

Wonders will never cease, I am back to model building and staying this time, though progress

will be slow. A few pics are attached to show that the first planking is finished with a little bit of filler and the

bulwarks have been glued on. Time to plank the deck next I think, should read instructions I suppose.

I am planning on using hooked, tapered and bent planking if I can

with the material provided in kit.

I didn't find it that big a problem. First off I ignored the layout provided with the kit (along with a lot of other stuff that wasn't properly researched) blew up that sectional sketch by King to match the kit plan size, then dropped lines off it showing the position of everything he had noted on the deck. Transferred to the plan layout and went from there. It's a bit tight in places but one really must assume that he knew his ship after what 3 years?

It'll tell you  little about the ship and show you the drawing I'm referring to. Check it out and then if things aren't clear I'll find my old work somewhere and post it for you.

Hi Chap,

In my understanding of stuff, , if you and Rick are discussing the "King" plank is the one that exactly bisects the Deck. (Divided exactly in two, Stem to Stern.)

There is not too much issue with "Plank Shift" on the centre line as Deck Furniture covers this.

(From the inference that Rick is discussing, it's plans?" Yup, need to understand "Plank Shift" for your Ship, C/S was 5, 2, 4, 3 1 or something similar,_)

I don't imagine that "Mermaid" would be anything as complex as that!! 🙂)

 

I guess decide on a "Planking Shift" that suits the model, i.e. the Cutty Sark example was based on a maximum Deck Plank length of 50mm resulting in a four plank "Shift."

 

Maybe Mermaid would be a three Plank shift? (Don't know....)

 

The Deck Planking, and the "Planking Shift" come on either side of the King Plank.

 

Happy to be "Gainsaid" by those more in the know, my understanding anyway.... 🙂

Sorry Harry way off - I'm referring to P.P. King commander of HM Cutter Mermaid. He has left a number of water colours of her plus a sectional sketch which allows for you to position deck fittings. The plans with the kit are good up to a point but accuracy is not the best, She carries a flying gaff not a topsail, the lower mast cap needs to be remade as it does not provide sufficient space before the foot of the top mast for the spreader to sit. None of his sketches show culverines, frames probably need omitting as they don't appear on models of that period ....... The sketch I'm referring to also helps with basic rigging. My build pictures may help a little.

 

Hope this helps rather confuses. 😊

Minor update and look what happens when I turn my back for 5 minutes.

The boys thought it would look good with "racing stripes". Who would have

heard of such a preposterous idea. However i really don't mid the look, a bit

unconventional, but what the heck. Lets hope that is all they have in mind!!

It has taken some time but the deck planking is finished. I really don't know

if how i have planked it was necessary, but I wanted to have a go at doing a deck

like this. The .4 mm thickness planks were a pain in the backside to use and after this ship

i am not going to use this thickness again. i still needs a sand and clean and a sealer.

Now to work out the layout of the deck fittings.
