still haven't managed to get good pictures in the daylight but here is some pics of the wheelhouse.

I added some extra detail like the dashboard and ships wheel I also decided to plank the exterior different  using opposing woods to create a contrast between the two woods I may be wrong but searching through the other logs have not seen this done yet and thinks it makes for a lovely finish

thanks brian it does look like that from the photos

regarding the engine bay im thinking I may not build the engine as im gonna have the ship in a case when completed and its not like I would remove it from case just to show engine

I am really enjoying this build and with the amount of parts I will have left over due to scratch building all the hardwood parts

I might scratch build a whole new ship the painted version and display both together

there is a mare in the gallery from another member that painted one side and stained the other which I thought looked really cool

Steve,

I really like the cabin (and the whole boat!). Was the wood planking on the cabin part of the kit or did you swap it in.  I like the grain in it.

I can learn a lot from your builds about the use of woods and finishes.

Hi Doug the kit only provided plywood for the cabin I added all the strips as for the finish its something ive used a lot on woodworking builds and wanted to try on a ship the mare nostrum seemed very fitting for the experiment.

Its a bog standard trade clear laquer bought from a car autoparts store I can buy a 500ml spray can of the stuff for £2.20

its self levelling and has gap filling propertys also I can sand back to change or repair a piece and simply spray over again each new coat adheres to the previous its sprayed straight onto the bare wood with as many coats as required light sanding between.

Also allow I haven't tried I suppose you could polish it with car wax :)

Very nice!!

The Wheel House looks great.

If you're going to make another "Painted" version, you could do a Diorama with the Boat on a Slipway for Maintenance and use the Engine as if it was being worked on?  :) (Just an idea....)

Regarding scratch building a painted version I have looked up al fittings on Cornwall model boats and al own website the box of fittings comes with many parts I could provide myself like the copper wire etc. But can't find where to purchase the winch or horn and lights etc any advice on where to find a fittings kit ?

Hi Chap,

Have you had a look at the "Billings" catalogue?

If you have a look at the Artesania Latina.net  catalogue, there are just heaps of bits and pieces.

(You just need the Part # then get Cornwall Models to order the bits in for you, Unsure if you can purchase direct from A/L)

Figure I have aprox ten hrs work invested into that wheel house if I preseted that to an employer or customer after a days work figure they would tell me not to show up tomorrow.

Thing is I could have built the real thing in that time

If your in my neck of the woods some day you can build me a full scale cabin!  I'd like that - a bit bigger and I'd have a place for my workshop!

As I have mentioned in some of my other posts before .working with wood and scale modelling are worlds apart even with my experience of 18+ Years carpentry I find scale building challenging

:piratebo5:hello all just a quick update

this week I have scratch built the required handrails and started to plank the inner bulwarks

I have also added some more detail to the wheelhouse and built  the engine room cover

regarding the engine room cover I tried several times to make the small ring that slides over the exaust pipe with no success that I was happy with I decided to go with the plywood kit provided piece and paint it black I haven't decided to use it or not yet ,it isn't hiding anything so is not required however I think a bit of colour added here and there adds a bit of flavour to the unpainted version and finely tried my hand at a bit of fine detail painting with the winch ,at the minute its a john deer winch but may change to a ford

think im gonna keep the campanion doors shut harry as this kit didn't provide the bunks ,im also not decided on the pale wood top of the companion entrance might plank it with the mahog whats your thoughts on that ? bearing in mind the doors and slide rails will be mahog

thanks

Well Chap,

If you planked the top of the Companionway, it would be consistent with the other Deck structures.

Your call!! :)

(You could "Dry Fit" the Mahogany to see how it looks first?)

Like the Jon Derre effect!! (Individuality,) Your  piece of Marine Art, no one else's.

Thanks Harry that's why these things take so long you might as well be building the real thing

Edit I also need to add a lot of what I've been able to do is down to the little proxon saw once again I highly recommend one of these

So if I buy a Proxon saw my models will look as good as yours?

Yup,

Got two Proxxon Saws, one tiny one, like yourself and the larger table Saw. Have not used this yet but looks promising when I have the need.

(It's hard to get Proxxon anything here, have to talk to a supplier in Australia.)

Be nice if you could raise and lower the blade on mine that way you could make ladder stringers

I assume the bigger saw has the ability to raise and lower but is the blade still nice and thin

Posted

Hi Chap,

The Blade does retract into the Table and also tilts.

The Blades have about a 1.5mm Kerf but there is the option of the "Super Fine" 0.5 mm Kerf.

(Not used in Anger yet. :))

For the hatches in front of the wheel house the kit instructions where to glue up a rectangle from planks then scribe lines out to form the three different lids

the following is how I decided to approach this instead.

I made two one with all hardwood and one with contrasting woods keeping with my theme I think I like the mixed one better

Ditto Doug,

Mixed version looks really "Sharp" Esp. after the finish!!

Awesome job and kit Upgrade/Upgrade!! :)

How are you getting on with the "Fish Box thingies?"

I stacked mine after building the Wood Lattice that they rest on and Pinned with Brass Wire through to the Deck, no glue, so the "Stack" looked more or less like wot was on the Box.
