Hi and a very Happy New Year to you all,

So I am slowely getting to the part of my build when it will be time to tackle the necessary masts and spars.

Having read many logs, I have come across many ways of tackling this but would be interested in your thoughts as to the best tools (and methods) for the job.

I hasten to add that my shipyard is a humble affair and the yard's management have not seen fit to provide sufficiant funding for professional lathes and the like so hand-tools advice would be great such as mini-planes etc.

Having said that, I see many comments about Dremler tools if that is something I should be considering.

Also, if possible any reference to the appropriate UK stockist would be fantastic.

Many thanks and I look forward to your responses.

Best wishes

John - Have a look here for tool advice:-

Most good model shops carry a range of tools - In the UK I find this outfit to be a good supplier:- http://www.cornwallmodelboats.co.uk/acatalog/tools.html.

I also use https://www.chronos.ltd.uk and find they give excellent service.

Also this link gives an idea of the sort of tools others are using to make masts / yards:- http://modelshipworldforum.com/ship-model-masts-and-yards.php

Hi John,

Keith has supplied some great information. Do you plan on making your masts and spars from square stick or dowels? Methods and tools can vary depending the type of stock you start with.

Hi Rusty

I will be using Dowel - as that is what the kit came with

If you are looking at hand tools

I would recommend looking at the veritas range of miniature tools. They are good quality tools, not cheap versions of their bigger cousins,  hold a good edge and very useful.

I would suggest the block plane and spoke shave to start. Many places sell them including Axminsters, or RDG Tools,

You can use the bigger ones but I feel these work better on the smaller scales.

Finished builds are

1/35 Endeavour's Longboat by Artesania Latina

1/36 scratch built Philadelphia Gunboat from the Smithsonian Plans

Current build is

Scratch build Boudroit's Monograph for La Jacinthe at 1/36

When time comes to rig your spars there is a great jig you can build yourself that was shown in Autumn 2017 issue (Vol 62, #3) issue of the Nautical Research Journal.  Looks like it will really help.

Go to the NRG home page link at the top of the page.  They have the individual articles for sale.

Thanks for the advice - I went on the site and then to the Store but the only articles ready for sale/download are Volumes 20 - 40. Looks like I'm going to have to wait a while before articles from Volume 62 become available.. . . .
