SD that second pic in #238 is absolutely beautiful in color and work and yes I could see a naval museum(s) somewhere taking this in:Lovely Work! ;)Kevin

Thank you Kevin. Really appreciate that. It would be nice to see it where others can see it.  I donated one to a library years ago, and it still there. I also displayed one in a tobacco shop, available for sale. It was there for yeeeers! Owner finally died and I never saw the ship again.  Luckily it was one of my first kits and not worth a lot.

Tonight I completed the second derrick and I glued the main mast in place.  I am just going to let it sit for the night so I don't get it out of alignment.

Hi peeps,

Got a lot done. I'm actually seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. First picture is where I was on the 18 of this month, and what it is today, 10 days later:

I got some of the work done here, like the doors and railing:

Also got the main derrick done. That was fun! (sarcasm):

I started placing all the ADO's and ALO's on the main control tower. When I'm done with that, I will be ready to place all the decks on the hull, but before that, I have to do all the hull work! Props, and circuit, and portholes!

Hi everyone,

Not a good night! Lots of fidgeting and reworking. Pontos supplied PE for the window frames shown here:

surgery2.jpg.7f211505f2168e75c804378b84d0890c.jpg

I don't just like to put that up there without removing the plastic and making a "room", so I removed the entire area.  When I went to do the same with the rear windows, the window "frames" pretty much got destroyed.  No way to file all those little squares and make them look even. So I got rid of the frames and made my own with some plastic strips.  Here's the result:

IMG_0089.thumb.JPG.fca28bc8d5c17879ce0cdd42d3d753c2.JPG

Not great, but a hell of a lot better than leaving them closed and looking like...plastic.

The next parts also required lots of surgery:

And here's the stuff painted without all the pretty stuff yet.  That's tomorrow.

Hope you like!

Ed

Extremely precise photo etch work here, love it looking forward to working through your build log, still can’t believe we’re the glue marks have gone 😂 just jealous. 👍

Thanks!  Lots and lots of patience. It doesn't help that the manufacturers supply such crappy instructions!  Half the time, you're left to figure stuff out on your own.  When you're done building the kit, there are TONS of parts left over, because no mention of them was made. For the amount of money that one pays for these things, you'd figure they would give you lots of written and photographic instructions.  At the very least, lots of illustrations and diagrams.  As it is, I NEVER use the paper instructions they give, you.  I either download the PDF or convert them to PDF and use my computer screen in front of my work area as a magnifying glass.

Also, you really need some good tools. Most of all, some good tweezers. Some good bending pliers. No need to go buying some of the expensive stuff such as this:image.thumb.png.c5ce5590281fe06f90ad346c0a8b73fa.png

But then there are tools that you just simply need. Rolling the PE is truly a nightmare without the right stuff.  I found this last night and I HAVE to buy it:

image.png.f3914950440eeee0a795012f47b850b0.png

No matter how carefully you try to "roll" PE, without something like this, it comes out like crap!  I just wish it wasn't so expensive, at almost $70 bucks!  If I had a milling machine and some aluminum lying around, I'd make my own.

I sincerely thank you all for the encouragement and kind words.

Ed

Hi Ed, first of me starting to look at other build logs, your Mikasa build log and CDW’s got me hooked on doing Mikasa, I bet without realising it was such a challenge, that’ll teach me for biting of something to big, love your workmanship and can only aspire to keep trying. Your lack of glue is baffling 😂 And I do like the tool you purchased for forming curves, can I ask were you purchase this cause I can instantly see the need for this ?  By the way I also have the Hood to build, still to buy Pontos set for it though, so I shall start working my way through your excellent build log and enjoy looking I bet. Thanks.

Update.

This fidgety small crap really takes a long time!  Tonight I worked on these little goodies:

912852777_6-18-201910-17-32PM.jpg.7d1aec03b87a762e7fa0e148c755351b.jpg

Parts number 594 had a missing post, on both parts:

IMG_0147.thumb.JPG.71f615a522fc3d564f8bd6a468accd97.JPG

At first I thought I had cut the first one off by accident.  But then I looked at the other (there are 2) and saw that it too was missing the center post.  It might seem like something really minimal, but this is the result of that missing post on the completed assembly:

IMG_0149.thumb.JPG.46c115e25db17ff0da4889c80ec46b55.JPG

I also worked on some of the break water. Turns out there's one complete one and one in 2 sections further aft that I have to build yet:

IMG_0148.thumb.JPG.8712cb2d19c4004909a04e5bc63ba5e3.JPG

That's all folks!

This looks a bit of a nightmare to make me thinks. 😳

Very nice. Just found this build log. I really like the black and unpainted etch scheme. One thing that got me back into ship modeling was going to a museum and seeing a model of an early destroyer where they left the brass work unpainted. I thought it looked very sharp. A similar vibe here.

Under construction: Mamoli Roter Lowe

Completed builds: Constructo Enterprise, AL Le Renard

Up next: Panart Lynx, MS Harriet Lane

In need of attention: 14-foot Pintail in the driveway
